This was meant to be several short videos, however fate conspired against me in the form of audio drop outs. In the end I cobbled this back together from scattered clips/ I hope you find it helpful.

Great vid. In all id be happy with 36 inches, but the moment i do mixed weapons and im fighting a Capo Ferro rapierist, i struggle with my 38 inch side sword to the point im finally investing in a 42 inch rapier blade to swap out when i facd a rapierist (and at the moment im doing more Bolognese than 1.33). Also if i run into a poor sap who only has a messer ill use my 31 inch arming. So for me it depends on the opponent and also if i want to focus on cuts or thrusts. So ive been a fan of have three arming/messer length, side sword "can do either length", and rapier length for those rapier and dagger muppets

Do you have any comment on the blade width of swords for this type of work? Considering if there were a safe equivalent of something as wide as the Albion Sovereign, I imagine it might affect what you could do in the bind...

I know this was a video about how every sword is personal, but would you reccomend the Albion sword you were showing in the video?

People get way to obsessed with making sure they follow all artistic aspects of manuscripts, people back then were more lax with sword terminology and switching styles up.
@cionm70773 жыл бұрын
Because they didn't know the variety that was around them. Terminology came out of a necessity because of the variety that we aware know that people back then didn't realize existed.
@londiniumarmoury70373 жыл бұрын
@@cionm7077 The people who wrote the manuscripts certainly knew of the variety around them, most of the people who ended up actually putting pen to paper on these subjects were military veterans, master sword fencers, instructors and well educated historians. These people were in contact with swords from all over the world, people in Europe collected swords even from the far east. We have examples of them even referencing many types of the same sword in manuscripts and they don't bother to even list the minor differences in the pictures. They were not ignorant of minor differences in types of swords.

Please forgive the question I'm very much a novice a I.33. My Guru has gone to great pains tell instil in me to always 'seek the bind' Is this what you're saying in this tutorial? To me once the swords have met the length becomes less relevant because the bucklers are coming into play as well when controlling the other blade and buckler, or am I missing the greater point of what you are saying. I don't think I'm expressing myself as well as I would like.
@LondonLongsword8 жыл бұрын
+Bloodaxetheirritable Not really, I think make a cause for your opponent to have to make the bind is more achievable aim.

On "correct" length of the sword for a persons height. Would the tip of the pommel be directly in line with the navel ? I have an Albion Kingmaker, 6ft tall. It feels great, no issue. Just wanted a more specific answer if possible. Great channel, thanks. -Tom KOA
@LondonLongsword8 жыл бұрын
not at all, I think choices of size are fairly arbitrary (I say this fully aware that many reasons are given by various authors for a chosen proportion and length) otherwise we wouldn't have such a huge and varied range of blade lengths.:) Thanks for following.:)

+LondonLongsword awesome. I just wanted your experienced opinion I feel positioning should always be first over dependent on a longer weapon alone, thank you. -Tom KOA

+Kult of Athena even so I would say the same thing. I habitually try different lengths of blade and enjoy discovering the pros and cons in all the variants. I am sorry that I can't give a more precise answer than it really depends on the properties you want in your tool.:)
@kultofathena62178 жыл бұрын
+LondonLongsword personally I'm coming from a Filipino martial background, principle weapon is the short sword 15" or 18". From doing more research into European blade fighting, I'd say a cut and thrust sword that has a great ability to recover. That's a broad description but any you can recommend that I can research would be helpful.
@LondonLongsword8 жыл бұрын
+Kult of Athena right this is going to require more research. I have opinions but I would rather not speculate without more evidence. I suspect the way forward is to measure swords found in situ with bodies and work the average proportion. This would give us a guide to common (ish) proportion. But decisions as to use choices would remain speculative.

Would a falchion be suitable for this fighting style?
@narusawa745 жыл бұрын
Yes as he said you can use a Messer for the style, have fun!
@Cleanpea3 жыл бұрын
2 years later, yes I know! Anyways, IMO a falchion would be ideal, wouldn't it. Or, a reversed edge falchion, both types are contemporary and gives certain advantages in the bind.

6666 views! And who was that masked, err moustachioed! man? Seems to have half a clue with fair bit in reserve anyway - that was informative. Not quite sure if this is corroboration of the point of what suits different folk and how some old baldes may not feel right in modern hands .... But .... when I thought about it that wasn't so surprising. They tended to do different work and actions to us. (Think waving a pick v holding a hammer drill, or horse and cart v driving a car or van). Getting a bit extream, the old longbow archers may be the best illustration. They spent so much time practicing taht their musculature looked almost like a fiddler crab!...... And they could routinely pull bows with 150+ pounds draw weight. Hardly anyone can draw such heavy bows these days. Now think that the knghts and the men at arms etc used to practice day in day out with a huge range of swords, axes, maces, warhammers (and for all I know a dormouse tied to a stick) and the one thing which becomes stand out not likley is their muscle groups being a lot like ours - why would they be?
