You also have to have some technical chops to succeed with WordPress. If you combine the inability to plan your website, with little to no knowledge of managing a site, you need to look at using a different platform. Choosing a theme is like giving advice on how to lose weight -- there's no one way for every human being. Because you didn't find success with this video, doesn't mean it's "terribly misleading" it just didn't work for *your* situation.

I get that. But my point is that from an editorial view I would expect that the bulk of a near-20 minute video would actually show me how to "choose" a theme and parse out what those decision points could be, not tangentially point out that it's difficult and spend half the video talking about 2017.

+zenmasterb the context is showing you an example of molding a theme to a particular business requirement and how the difficulty of the 20% custom work plays out. Again, you're looking for step by step, as if every user can fit into the same requirements. Treat this as just another exercise in deciding on a theme, but not blatantly incorrect.

+PluginTut I have to agree with zenmasterb. If the title had read "molding a WP theme to a particular business requirement", like you said so in this comment, it would have been a good fit. The actual title I also find misleading since it does not deliver on the promise "here´s how to decide on a theme". Regardless if one is looking for a step-by-step approach or not - the focus of this video is just not matching the video´s title, that´s all. The video you mention in this video (feature theme vs. ...) does a better job at that!

+Daniel Baker thanks! It's unfortunate that a lot of tutorial content on KZfaq is strictly to get an affiliate sale, not with the users best interest in mind. On the flip side, a web designer should understand that one theme can't do everything you need it to do, start making a toolkit of themes you use on paid work.

Yeah I hear ya, a lot of different tutorials recommend Theme Forest which seems to be the main one. I'm creating a site for myself, a travel blog, so atm I have the luxury of taking my time and being able to find something that fits my needs.

See, choosing a theme isn't easy ;) Since that's mostly just content, you need to think about how you want to organize the display of your content. I'd first offer up my own theme, Baton wordpress.org/themes/baton. Otherwise, find a theme that you will allow you to "bucket" your content for your user to navigate easily.

In any decision making process knowing what NOT to do, plays a very important role in knowing what to do.

Wordpress seemed an easier solution compared to coding to me. I started with coding and CSS part was giving so much headache and I couldn't really find a good solution. Besides, I had no idea about security issues and adding any feature like log-in would be very time consuming. Yeap, WP has a steep learning curve at the beginning. It looks like you're not allowed to do anything the way you want. I guess it is because of the big picture plan for all the themes and plug ins to be added into that structure.

What did you expect from the video? The blah blah part is the part the breaks down why it’s hard to choose a theme like I said in the title. If I could read your mind through a video and select theme exact theme *you* were looking for, I wouldn’t be making videos :)
