My only reason for not wanting to use paid themes is what if you buy it and then find that it's too hard to work with, or you can't do what you wanted to with it? With a free one you can mess around with it and if it doesn't have the capabilities that you want you haven't lost any money. I wish they would have a 30 day money back guarantee or something.

+Donna Southwood that's a great point and why, I think, the free lite version of a theme, model is working. But my experience is that the paid version is of lesser quality. That being said, I think most themes do have a 30 day return policy. I know on ThemeForrest I have received a refund many times.

Imagine how that would be exploited by buyers. Most paid themes have extremely accurate descriptions and demos, plus the sellers can answer you any question about what the theme can and cannot do. Your point is not valid :)

Lovely. I'm currently shifting from traditional coding to using WordPress and there's still so much to learn. Free/paid themes, page builder like Divi, this BeaverBuilder and what some StudioPress is doing. On top of that, I'm still learning what good design is :-D I'll check out your site to get up to speed, so big thank you to you!

OMG...I needed this video about a year ago...Had to redo my site twice because of those dang "free" templates...None of them worked right and once I changed them it took all my hard work and trashed it...I did my research, bit the bullet and brought Divi...I'm a life time member and I love love love it...wonder product...Thanks for this wonderful video!

I don't like niche themes, I much more prefer a general purpose theme that can do everything, and then use a page builder for the content.

Hi I did take your 60 min challenge you explained it quite well, I am content with it! however I wanted to upgrade it, make it more elaborate, I own a restaurant and I would like to blog as well and eventually sell some bottled salsas and hot sauce,. I'm interested in a paid version, perhaps one from divi theme. My question is would I have to put all the info in again or can I somehow transfer it? how does it work? should my blog be attached to my website should it be separate? whats best thank you in advance!

While I am not familiar with that particular theme, something as niche specific as that, you definitely want to use a theme that is made for that purpose.

I actually used Sydney back in 2015 when i started with wordpress and my own site. I learned a lot and the support and willingness to help out even with custom code were amazing. And people loved it. So - sydney was wonderfull for me in that time. But then it was time to step the game up and went the paid route with X. And now i just wonder what a difference a year makes regarding free stuff(oceanwp, astra, elementor...dear lord-i used site origin page builder back then...). And how someone can mess up something that i used to like very much(namely X).

What is your opinion on Zerif Pro? I have been using it but find there is a lot that I cannot customize. Also, what would you recommend doing to make additional pages outside of the home page look professional?

+Chillmore Personally, I would never buy / use that theme. There are much more polished themes in that price range. I think the theme is a bit limited outside of the homepage, so that must be where the trouble is coming from. You should check out the recommended page on my website, also check out Divi.

The video is excellent and very informative. Did something change with Wordpress recently? I upgraded from the basic plan and using the paid templates. However, I'm not able to customize much and make many changes as in the video. .Should I be doing something different?

You described my scenario in the beginning of this video, I intended to use a free theme, but ran into trouble and spent countless hours trying to get answers for things I couldn't change. I was using Biz Light as a theme to replace my unresponsive website, but there were so many issues, and my limited knowledge led me to hire a local designer to do finish the site. I have a mobile windshield service, can you suggest any paid themes I could suggest to my web designer once we meet? (We'll be using Wordpress). Thanks!

These days most of the heavy lifting is done with a page builder. So for example a perfect stack of tools is the Astra Theme with Elementor.

Thank you for your very informative video. I got divi a while back. I think I may need another WordPress theme though, because I want to create a social network using the buddy press plugin, but buddy press and other WordPress plugins I need are not compatible with divi. Do you know any way to make those plugins compatible with divi? If not, do you have a solution or suggestion? I plan to make a website with many different functions and some pages may have very different designs so I need something flexible like divi but without the limitations of having to only use divi plugins.

I would recommend using buddy press at all. There is a much better and reliable fork of BuddyPressy called BuddyBoss.

Hey, thanks for the vid! What about Restored 316 themes? I'm looking for a feminine wordpress theme for my decor & diy blog (heavy on the images). These seem to be super popular but they seem pricey to me. Also, they say they run on the Genesis framework and as i've only used a free theme to this point, I'm not sure if I can handle the tech aspects. Thoughts??

WPCrafter What is the importance of Buying a premium theme? Elementor Pro Allows you to make the Menu look however you want. No need to have a plugin for contact forms as that feature is already prebuilt into the Builder and you can make the rest of the site look however you want with photoshop and the builder.

I agree with you full heartedly on this. 4 years after this video. I still use premium themes for this very reason. But I'm going to jump in head first with Elementor for my next project.

Yep, time have changed and the tools we use have as well. Elementor Pro is only going to get better at replacing themes.

Bought a theme from AThemeArt and it refuses to activate. Been working with the creator for a week. Getting error message from WP now and I'm over it. So far, no luck in getting a refund. Buyer beware.

Pretty much everything! The menu doesn't align properly with the logo, and there's a million other things that from a design perspective are complete disaster.

Haha, guess your opinion has changed since then, since your theme of choice is now Astra (and I think before that it was GeneratePress)... If it's not already done, maybe you should do a video to explain why you've changed 180 degrees...

Well, I don't think my views have changed at all from this video. My main issues with all the free themes at the time were that they gave you no customization options. They started substandard, and their paid versions were equally substandard. I talked about no options to change the copyright, fonts, colors, and no support. If you look at Astra, that is not the case at all there, it's free version meets all those requirements. And the paid version of Astra is amazing, it doesn't just give some color and font options, it unlocks some VERY powerful developer stuff. So it's simply and apples to oranges comparison.

Great vid, just one or two caveats, please don't use the term "aesthetically correct" by definition how anything looks is subjective, so my correct could be your incorrect. You seem to have your fingers in a few pies, so how can you be seen as neutral ? Just saying... I want a theme with good automation and documentation to sell online , any ideas ?

yes but oceanWP is a free theme which you can get a premim version...and astra is also free...so what do you think about the premium versions of these themes....on top of that you are using the astra theme in your website ?

Not necessarily so...I bought paid themes and 'they' used "Bakery Builder" to build "their" site. I was not told---until i finished the site and ran into problems. My site froze up. Waste of my valuable time. No price tag on that. I used Sydney. Worked well. I had to add code for the contact page (after it disappeared) . I could have uploaded contact 7 plugin. No big deal. My concern is load time. I need a fast load time and the latest PHP version. Any suggestions.

There is a B I G industri of people trying to convince suckers that they need to pay money for nothing and filling these paid themes with "latte"-pictures and food on wooden plates in trendy kitchen. They look great, no doubt about it. But when you remove the pictures and all the "fluff" and start to build your own from scratch, you soon realize that: hey, this looks a lot like the WP-menues I got for free. It's like trying the jeans you bought in that trendy store with those dark and tinted mirrors og cool music, and thinking: Wait, are these the same pants?

While I do see a ton of value in purchasing a theme versus using a free theme in just about every scenario. But just like anything else you have to be careful who you buy from because there are people that are fly by night, here today and gone tomorrow.

I have bought one premium wordpress theme and reuse that to built 6 website, but I have only 1 license of that theme. Does my other website's SEO will effect on the other website which does not have license on it.

There are dozens of free themes that come with support, and the reviews state how reliable said support is. Did you do any research on this? If a theme is not esthetically pleasing, that's a personal issue, not a caveat.

Always the same verbiage from you web designers. Nothing of any substance beautiful and elegant is in the eye of the beholder. If the thing is not set up to work with SEO it doesn't matter how elegant and beautiful it looks it is junk. Nobody focuses on the function of the website for its intended use and that's the bring people to your site and then get them to contact you. People make comment on how beautiful the present is wrapped but they really don't care once they tear the paper off it's the substance that counts
