Another kind of drybag that is all-too-rare yet very useful is one that has an inflation tube. After filling it, sealing it and squashing it into its place in the kayak, you then inflate it so it fills as much space as possible, for extra buoyancy. That is a useful safety feature in kayaks that have overly large cockpits or in open canoes.

Yeah, Ive seen these, but never used them. I think there is generally enough air trapped in my bags that it isn’t an issue, but for something with a big open cockpit, or a canoe - as you said - a very good idea. Thanks for pointing it out.

3 is the minimum. If I have the space I will do more. But even at 3 I have never had a dry bag leak like that. The sea to summit bags (I think their big river bags) say right on them to roll three times. If you have the space, go for it. On the list of things I worry about that is pretty low.

I recently bought two dry back from walmart. ( outdoor products ) and took a tumble in the water with them. And surprisingly they did great. now for longevity i cant tell you, but they did surprise me with how sturdy they are.

Yeah, I worry about longevity. I also wonder who really makes them? I bet they are re-branded sealine. Let me know how they do long term!

5:00 because you liked the purge valve, Sealline stopped making it. I thought that companies that made the flat-bags with the purge valve stopped because "I" liked them. I wonder if these companies do a survey, "we discovered that people love this product and we can make a lot of money selling them so let's stop making them and put out a crappier product that won't last as long." I still use my MSR Dromedary bags because the originals were so well made. But, if it is a good product that lasts, the company cannot sell more when they wear out because they never wear out.

I always attributed it to, my use case is different than a “normal” user. So that I loved a product wasn’t actually the problem, but I loved it for a reason different than other people. I still use original dromedary bags, I have NO IDEA why they changed the cap on those bags…. Makes no sense. I too have drom bags that are decades old.

I think you're risking it a bit with only 3 folds -- i usually read that 5 is the minimum recommended fold count, for safety.

Sea to summit says right on their big river bags to roll three times. That is minimum, and if I have the space Ill keep rolling (You can always make a dry bag smaller, right? But not bigger!) but that said, I have never had a dry bag leak at the folds. If you’ve got the space, go for it, but it isn’t something I worry too much about.

What launch was that. I kayak all over Norfolk and don’t know that place.

That was the launch at Colley Avenue. Super nice launch, but parking isn’t great. Particularly if you have a 24 foot long van. What launches do you recommend in Norfolk? I am still finding my way around.

I'm looking to buy my first dry bags for kayaking. Between the Sea to Summit Lightweight and Big River bags, which would you recommend? (The Big River bags are on sale right now, so the price difference is pretty small)

This isn’t an easy answer. I own both. The lightweights, are a little slipperier, so they slide inside a kayak better. The Big Rivers are a little more durable, and have lash points on the side. But that said I am using Lightweights that Are approaching a decade old… I think it depends on how you want to use them. I use lightweights for food. I use big rivers for other things. I hope that helps…But im not sure it did…

@@AdventureOtaku Thanks. That did help. It at least makes it clear that for my intended use (storage of softer items inside my kayak) the lightweights are plenty durable.

Indeed. They will work fine.
