This has to be my favorite Ted Talk. It's okay to be humble, and I'm a fan. The most humble person that ever lived was Jesus and studying his life in the Bible, we can learn so much from him. Thanks for an amazing and insightful TedTalk.

People have been fed a steady stream of "the world doesn't care about you, why are you caring about it", and "you need to fight for what you want" for at least a century now. As broken as society is, not many people see what society does for them, so there isn't much motivation to *want* to serve others or be humble.

I was expecting some depth to this deep subject. *Humility is the opposite to entitlement.* Entitled to be adored. Entitled to be respected. Entitled to be served. Entitled to have everything my way. Humility forgives readily, is appreciative and is never easily offended. Humility seeks to empathise instead of ridicule (including ridiculing one's self) -- it's gentle with people (including one's self). Thus, insecure people with low self-worth are not to be misunderstood as humble -- they can still have huge feelings of self-entitlement, they're just too shy to let them be known.

Thank you for this perspective because at the mention of his parents as the model of the solution, was a bit pausing. I have learned that humility is not only found in focusing on servicing others. The contrary might be true. there is a lot of self-serving in service. yuck

I agree with the sentiment of the video, and was interested enough to watch it through, but this guy doesn't come across as humble.. he comes across as an entrepreneurial millenial who has seen a niche anti-market for millenials.. what does he mean by "humility" ? we can all claim to be humble can't we ? Psalms 149: 4 For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.

How can humility, or the quest for humility, ever result in anything except low self esteem and inability to accomplish anything? If I go all day long meditating on how unworthy I am, that won't result in holiness. That only results in the person becoming that much more unworthy. Does anybody else have this problem? Has putting yourself down really resulted in holiness or power for living for any of you out there?

Thank you, I am 65 and brought up to believe in putting other people first. It isn't easy and can be painful, it takes time and inner strength to realise that come what may it is right. However, I also needed to learn to look after myself too. I think you have set a big challenge to your generation and well done for raising the issue.

I know the factor of social media. I caught myself in the vortex of selfies etc. Now I am practicing humility. Suggestion google it for reals, listen to his message. I feel like the problem of narcissism is a inherit quality of our technology coupled with the exploitation of our natural tendency to be noticed. Smart phones and social media has made it possible to communicate and share your life with hundreds of more people we’d ever be able to naturally. It’s only natural for us to want to boast and flaunt when we always have large audiences. Also I have read that children and suicide rates have a strong correlation!

Self centeredness shows many of the same behaviors as those who are narcissistic. Humility is usually false but genuine humility for the self is protective. Self importance and hedonism seem inextricably linked, which is dangerous because the monetary system profits at the expense to individuals through their hedonism (mindless self indulgence) . The economy wants people addicted in one form or another and making them self indulgent, self absorbed and self centered creates the perfect mindless consumer who thinks the universe revolves around them.

A little cold water from the real world: in a work situation an unselfish worker is looked on as a patsy. Co-workers avoid him, the boss overloads him with work, and of anything goes wrong he is blamed. Leadership roles? I could also give you countless of examples of living after. The hippie generation that totally eclipsed the entire generation I grew up in... which leads to my point.. the generation z after millennial generation is changing the world and moving in packs of political activism... each generation is part of what came before and is a product of their times. Shaped by factors that manifest from those that came before, they are cycles, like in economics

All true, and this was an excellent start. Now ask: What possible underlying motivation will Millennials have to live like this? I think there is only one answer. Jesus Christ. When you find out how sinful you are, and the fact that Jesus took the blame for you, it changes everything. It's automatically humbling but at the same time that you know how loved you are. There is nothing in the universe that does this besides Christ.

“Not I, But Christ” has become a scares concept in our churches and in our societies today. It is even more scares in me. It is frightening to even consider. if you would just look at social networks or media today, or humanity's regressive old traditions, and our destructive progress, the words of this song would be appear ‘oppressive’ or ‘limiting’. However, you go to church today; are people who claim to be “humble” Christians, and are still strong church-goers, however, come closer to them, you will experience the most coldest brush of human affection you never experienced before. And like the “pharisee-effect”, they do not see themselves. Dear God, in a world where success is measured by in-comprehensive love of yourself. Where self is to be better and beyond another through the most ghastly actions possible, please help us navigate our way back to you Gentle Shepherd.

It's simply slapping the reality in your face because you are too self-absorbed to yourself that you don't have a sense to the outside world anymore. You are too self-centered to the point that you have no empathy to others. That is why "just be yourself" is a center phrase here. It's sad but true and yes truth hurts.

Ugh. This guy has bought into the baby boomer mythos hard. Being confident with a strong sense of identity does not imply a lack of compassion or a lack of interest in others. Nor does it imply a lack of mindfulness. He also heavily abuses the correlation fallacy to tie several unrelated facts together into one argument that is basically millenials are bad, and because they do selfies, they care nothing for others and their lives have no meaning.
