Choosing the best 3D printer: A simple how to for beginners in 2024

Just wanted to say, the free guide you offer is fantastic. As someone new to 3d printing, the guide helped clarify and answer many things that are easy to miss when just starting out. I'm also glad to hear your opinion on bed size, in that smaller beds are fine for the most part. This was a big concern of mine. I ordered a bambulab A1 mini package that includes the ams lite, hardened nozzles and an additional build plate. It's set to arrive in early December, but I have thought about cancelling it multiple times and getting something with a bigger plate and possibly an enclosure, mostly due to fomo. While I think the 180mm plate should be fine for most prints I do think I will prolly want to print some larger items. However I have been learning more about splitting prints and different ways to connect separatly printed parts in such scenarios. If you have any insights and thoughts on splitting and rejoining large prints it would be great to hear your take on the matter. Also, regarding working with materials without an enclosure, if you have insights into how to make parts stronger when working with common materials that would be another topic I'd love to hear more about. Lastly if possible I'd love to hear your thoughts on the bambulabs A1-MINI, as from what others have said about the printer it seems like an ideal printer to start with. Thanks! Your feedback is much appreciated. Splitting and joining mostly depends on what the part you splitted needs to be able to withstand. For decorative stuff superglue is usually enough. For technical parts I usually opt for screws or other metal inserts. I printed a cosplay helmet with antennas for a friend and inserted threaded rods (needed to add a threaded hole to the design downloaded) which made them virtually indestructible for example. I've yet to try any Bambu labs printer. Unfortunately my space at home is limited 😅 My totally personal opinion on them is I don't like the proprietary nature, meaning you can't fix most things on your own. I just recently printed a new extruder for a friend's Prusa because he wasn't paying attention and got a huge blob of plastic covering everything. Wouldn't be possible with a Bambu About the stronger standard materials part, I usually augment parts with metal hardware. For example I described putting screws into the nubs of a printed gear for extra break resistance. A video of that kind is on my list for future videos. Let me know if you desire anything else :-)

Most printers with (good) enclosure are quite expensive compared to something like the A1 or the Ender 3 V3 SE. But you might have a look at the Creality K1. It has the "standard" sized 220x220 bed and all the "new" features that ready to run printers nowadays should come with. Should be around $ 400-500. Maybe that might be suitable for you if you think the Bambu A1 might be a bit to small and you don't want to make your own enclosure for it but also don't want to spend more. Ofc. no AMS then. Disclaimer: I've got 2 Bambus (A1 and P1S both with AMS) and one K1. I like them all. :D

What I mean exactly is you need to get specific Bambu components and can't just take off the shelf hardware like rods and bearings. But that seems to be where 3D printing is heading in general. More specialized parts and closed source software

@@SmallBatchFactory How to you come to that assumption? Like I said there rly is no reason for this. Bambu selling spare parts does not mean they are the only ones that can be used in every case.

The problem with getting started is the fact there are no honest reviews and recommendations. You're all being paid to push specific models so of course those will top your list.

Sorry to disappoint you, no third party except KZfaq ads pay me. I get a lot of inquiries but I don't take any of them, I only sell my courses. My honest recommendation for a beginner would be a Prusa machine since that's the one I have a lot of good experience with. To be honest in my experience the 3D printing community is one of the most honest of all the "influencers" out there. The channels I watch never hold back with criticism (CNC Kitchen, Makers Muse, Made with layers etc.)

I'm wanting to get into it with a medium size printer I'm torn between Neptune 4 plus and the kobra 2 plus was sold on the Neptune till I saw a lot people having issues with tge bed leveling having to put nylon washers ect to fix it. It's gonna be something for my kids and myself to do and make some stuff with.

What's the B---- system being described around 2:10 onwards? The speech is very fast and the accent is a little strong, and the CC definitely can't work it out - it would be good to have terminology shown on the screen for the next version. 😊Vielen dank! Thanks! I'm talking about a "bowden system". That's when you have the extruder motor away from the Nozzle and push the filament through the PTFE tube. P.S. I'm talking slower in newer videos

Hello, Iam a 69-year-old dumb Butt. So, I looked around and found a deal in my price range ( Voxelab Aquila S3 3D). But it failed right out of the box. Not knowing much as I am new to 3d printing. It took me a day and a half to give up trying to print. I had a buddy come over with his heat scanner and the head heat was good. So I put on my thinking cap, what was the main issue? Intermittent printing. So, I started looking at the feeder, and I found it. The feed roller gear drive did not have a set screw in it. I have not checked the other side as it would take disassembly of the head. I will try to let you know how they resolve this and how long it takes. Rickie Smith

You only need a set screw in the motor driven part anyway. Loose or dull extruder gears are a very common issue. My Chinese Voron printer had dull gears and started to have issues because of that.

i have trouble chooosing smaller or bigger , I would like bigger however bigger bed will introduce vibrations most likely . currently deciding between ender 3 v3 ke , v2 neo and max neo . i dropped off elegoo cause one video said that it had ocme with twisted axis multiple times and i most of the time make functional prints so quality and dimensional accuracy are the most important . i need to replace my ender 3 which has gone trough a lot , including two blobs of death

If you need bigger there's no way around it. If it fits your budget you could also check out a Core XY printer like the Creality K1 (Max). They don't need to fling a heavy bed around, which is a huge plus. I have a Voron 2.4 which is also very cool, but I rarely need the build volume

@@SmallBatchFactory i dont have budget for k1 , meanwhile bigger i could benefit from it couple of times . There were like 3 things where i would need bigger one otherwise 200x200 is enough

When you go bigger you also have do take higher electricity cost for the bed heating into account. Depending on where you live and how often you print this can add up pretty quickly.

Do you have any recommendations at the moment for a Beginner ? There are so many Printers out there, which makes it a bit difficult for a Beginner to find something suited ...

It very much depends on your budget. I personally had the least hassle ever with my Prusa mk3. The benefit of the mk4 is not huge so you might even find a used one. Best thing is that machine is open source so you can swap anything yourself if it breaks. That's also the reason I'm not fond of Bambu. If you're in a tight budget a Creality printer like the Ender 3 is still a usable entry level machine. My old CR 10 still works fine too, it's just a bit more tinkering to at the start to get used to it (manual bed leveling). Let me know if you need more help.

@@SmallBatchFactory Yeah I have thought about buying a Prusa, but they are quite expensive and even the used ones one eBay which have probably some 1000 print hours on their back ^^ I am quite new to the hobby and want something quite reliable but does not break the bank of an Student. But the only option I see at the moment are the options from creality ...

@EliasX962 the only reason I abandoned my CR-10 are missing bed leveling and that it takes the big bed very long to heat up. Both of those are mitigated on an Ender 3 with BL touch (auto bed leveling device). I got one from my colleague this week for free with some issues so i will probably even make a few videos on this model in the future. To first get started I still think it will do a good job and it's incredibly cheap. Even more so if used. With some experience you will know what you really need and want and can buy a more expensive model. Might also be that you never even need to switch since it fits for 90% of use cases.

The new Ender 3 V3 SE looks very good, it has automatic bed leveling and z offset for around 200 usd. Haven't tried it myself but it has good reviews and im thinking of buying one.

Hab zwar den Kanal "Kleinserienwerkstatt" schon mal gesichert, komme aber zeitlich nicht dazu neben der Arbeit zwei Kanäle mit Videos zu versorgen. Vielleicht ergibt sich da in Zukunft noch mehr, kann aber aktuell nichts versprechen.

There are a lot of options, depending on your budget. The Prusa mk4 or a used mk3 is a good and reliable option

i hear those are great reliable printers but for the price point they arent really considered "beginner" right? @@SmallBatchFactory . in other words, as a beginner, dont you want to buy a cheaper printer then a prusa, because if you cant figure out your printing problems with a prusa, you just spent upwards of $600 on it. Is there a cheaper beginner 3d printer that gets up to 270°C that you would recommend?

It's way easier to print with a Prusa than with cheaper printers. If your budget limits you the main thing to look out is an all metal hotend. With those you can usually print up to 300 degrees. I don't own any recent budget printers so I don't have personal experience. From what I've heard the new Ender 3 SE might be a good choice, but make sure to double check for the hotend.

@@SmallBatchFactory Creality Ender 3 has a great price point and people say its a great printer for 1st timers like me, but that printer is supposed to get up 280°C or something like that but reddit & youtubers point out it doesnt get that hot so i'm leary of claims made by 3d printer companies now and I'm asking individuals instead.

You mean like real action or printing and then just looking at them? Figurines generally look way better on a resin printer. But they're also more fragile

You could get the new Ender 3 SE that the channel Makers Muse reviewed recently. It's a direct extruder and shouldn't be too expensive. The biggest part in good results make the print settings. When in doubt print slower and your prints should look nicer.

I didn't test all those printers so I have no experience. The quality will probably be good with all of them. The largest part is up to you by choosing the right print settings and material.

REALLY BAD VIDEO. I know NOTHING about 3D printers but am interested in them so I thought I'd inform myself by watching a youtube video about it. This video is WAAAAY over my head and NOT suitable for beginners, AT ALL.
