Background
Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23 is a significant work in the piano repertoire, composed between 1831 and 1835. It's part of a set of four ballades, each with its own distinct character and musical narrative. The ballade form itself is a relatively free and expressive form.
I chose to play this particular section as it highlights Chopin's skill in syncopation to create rhythmic interest and tension. Syncopation occurs when accents are placed on weak beats or offbeats, disrupting the regular metrical pattern. This effect can be found mainly in his larger works, like the set of Ballades and Scherzos.
