As a Chinese pianist, Li Yundi is most well known for being the youngest pianist to win the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition, in 2000, at the age of 18.

God, this piece is so ridiculously beautiful. I feel like 'beautiful' doesn't even quite describe how I feel about this piece. I can't find the words to describe it, but it's one of my favorite pieces by Chopin, and Chopin is one of my favorite composers. It's played so exquisitely here! It's a piece I would love to play myself sometime.

I totally agree! The way he played it was so beautiful, especially the ending with how delicately he did play all of the cadenzas and how he made it sound so fluid. Chopin was a genius when it came to composing for piano.

You hear these sounds, they sound like pearls glistening in the sun. At first they are shy and gentle, and then like a powerful thunder that suddenly goes out. It's Chopin's music, you hear the silence that Chopin plays ... it's a genius ...

I do not know any music that shakes my soul like Chopin's music does. I play a few pieces ( the "easy" ones ) by Chopin, and regret that I did not keep studying the piano when I was younger, as now for me it will be impossible to play difficult pieces, like the Polonnaises, I LOVE THEM....

The secret is to be present in the moment, enjoying whatever work your hands find to do. If both hands labour, much grief comes. You lose the joy of inner satisfaction from your own hard work. The secret is to work with one hand whatever you are doing now, and with the other open-palms, receiving and adapting to the seasons above you. You can always be one day older and wiser than the day before. You never lose the satisfaction of appreciating something if you truly love it. You still have that. Who knows? One day you might find yourself playing literally again. We just never know what tomorrow will bring. Wherever you are in life, I highly recommend the Book of Ecclesiastes to sober you up.

Amon Goth, the SS officer in charge of Plaszow concentration camp (Ralph Fiennes in Schindlers list) let two Jewish sisters live because one of them played this perfectly for him on his birthday. Beautiful music to a chilling fact.

I like your trills, they sound natural and attractive like continuation of the melody which is difficult to do. Most pianists cannot do it, even famous ones. So bravo, Yundi Li. Your performance is simple and beautiful like I would emagine Chopin would play.

I love this piece, it is just really beautiful and sublime (Is sublime even the right word?). I just feel the grief and sadness about Chopin. This is also my favourite Chopin piece. Also, the runs at the very end are just continuous. Li Yundi did a beautiful job of interpreting this Nocturne.

Try Władysław Szpilman's version. Played in year 1997. At his home. At his 86 years old.

Beautiful rendition of this piece. Some people might think that there are some notes missing in Yundi Li's playing, because the sheet music edition Yundi Li uses is not what is displayed in the video. He probably used the Koneman Urtext edition.

@@FelineRock It's probably the easiest nocturne but in general I would avoid trying to learn the nocturnes until you have at least grade 7+ on piano. Although at the end of the day if you enjoy playing it, why not give it a go.

This nocturne would be difficult for a beginner, especially the measure where thirty-five notes have to fit into two beats. I’m personally having difficulty in that measure, but the rest of the measures aren’t way too difficult. Again, if you are more advanced than a beginner. Probably it’d be best to try this piece when you are late intermediate or early beginner. Whatever you decide, good luck and have fun! This is truly a beautiful piece and it’s totally worth learning.

It is so interesting when the scores are provided as visuals. I like lots of things about this. For one thing he makes the most beautiful sound and the range of colours is exquisite. But somehow, looking at the notes, I'm thinking that there are dynamics which are being ignored. All artists have to make decisions when interpreting a piece but for me what really makes this music "sing" is when the surface gets ruffled. Although these pieces were mostly performed by the composer in salons, they could never be described as salon music and what stops them from drifting towards this are the sometimes strange dynamics. The have to be embraced and absorbed properly so that they enhance rather than detract from the overall effect.

Understand three things: You must practice a lot. There are no rules in music. You will never be Chopin, so develop your own unique sound. Then you will be "as good as chopin." :-)

This is such a difficult piece for me because...althougth I can play the 'notes' just fine....when I PLAY THE MUSIC, the sound, the feel, the soul of this piece, I get emotional, and get lost almost in the motifs, the phrasing, the dynamics. It makes me cry sometimes. Easy to play the notes mostly - hard to choke through the emotions of this piece when you make it music, not button pushing.
