Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Whitesnake.
Whitesnake is led by the legendary rock vocalist David Coverdale and over the years/decades, the group has housed various musicians for an assortment of studio albums and massive-scale tours all over the world. These hired-gun musicians include notable players such as John Sykes, Steve Vai, Adrian Vandenburg, Vivian Campbell, and many other famous musicians who have joined the group and left their mark on the music.
This lesson takes a look at a number of interesting chord-based ideas hiding in their catalog of material and ranges from popular and lesser-known music from this powerhouse rock group. From cuts found on classic Whitesnake albums such as 'Slide It In' and the self-titled debut from 1987, to the album 'Slip Of The Tongue' that featured the fiery playing of guitar legend Steve Vai.
Needless to say, there should be something for everyone in this lesson as I've attempted to feature a number of ideas from the various incarnations and versions of this classic supergroup.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Sykes is truly an amazing guitarist. I still haven’t heard any other guitarist delivering energy and excitement like Sykes. There has been quite a many top class guitarists in Whitesnake but Sykes era is just at another level than the rest of the stuff. Coverdale at his peak together with Sykes was such an insane combination of talent.

@demokraatti, Absolutely agree about Sykes. Vastly underrated guitarist, and can sing as well as evident on Blue Murder. Too bad no one can stand to work with Coverdale for more than an album or two at most. If Coverdale could have reeled in his ego, Whitesnake would have been masive with the Coverdale/Sykes combo. As it stands one awsome album, but there could have been many more.

@@fernandes5986 Primarily because the goofs at KZfaq don't promote his content as much as they do with the clowns with a big song and dance that also participate in the "KZfaq guitar channel" hate machine. It's pretty sad, really, but David will get the views he deserves with persistence! For some strange reason, the powers that be would rather have grade school style drama and hate than solid content that has a wealth of knowledge to be shared!

I'm 32, been a metalhead since 2002, and over the years I gravitated away from contemporary metal to old school, so I really dig all these bits. Anyone else under 40 here? Cats like Tosin Abasi and Zacky Vengeance are great and all, but my heroes are the class of Mick Mars and Paul Gilbert🙂

I really like how how you give vibrato to the chords, it makes a difference in playing a non static rhythm, you should point that out, that vibrato on a chord can make your sound more fluid. Love you channel!

16:19 - That section is the tail of the interlude, going into the main solo. There is a slide into that C# under the ring finger. It doesn't feature as heavy later in the song but in this section specifically, the slide into that G figure and the C# figure are prominent in the mix. It's a tasty bit. Rush's "Free Will" has a similar moment. It's the bit after the solo and just before the "Each of us..." vocal section. 70's era guitarists, man! They had taste.

Great band. One of the best, if not the first, blues rock bands. The first albums in the late 70s were so good, Walking in the shadow of the blues, Lovehunter etc. When John Sykes left Thin Lizzy and joined ‘Snake, the band changed into a more metal band. A completely different band which I didn’t appreciate at first (I remember thinking ‘what has he done to my Whitesnake’?) but as a big Sykes fan it grew on me very quickly 😃 As always, a really good video chat and explanations. Cheers!

Man the Whitesnake 87 record was a huge eye opener! lol I didn't even understand how that sound came from the same Whitesnake that did slide it in! The guitar playing in this was so 80's but it kicked so much butt! Sykes definitely came screaming out of the gates on this record. The last riff you played starting around 16:15 is a great 80's chord progression! very cool stuff. As always thanks for the video man!

Oh, John Sykes. The mighty, mighty John Sykes. I switched from drums to guitar because of Michael Schenker but John Sykes is truly an underrated diamond. On the list of "Least Appreciated Guitar Legends" he must be right up in the top three. Not only his INSANE playing (phrasing, technique, etc., etc.) but his singing was as good, or better, than Coverdale's. It really is a travesty that this guy never got his due in America. I didn't know my opinion was that strong...but I've had a lot of Red Bull. Cheers.

With Adrian mentioned, perhaps a Vandenberg Chordplay? And with Sykes mentioned, a Thin Lizzy one even though he was with them for 1983. And Thin Lizzy opens a wide can with Eric Bell, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White and Sykes being aboard for shorter durations than the band's consistent mainstay guitarist, Scott Gorham. So, don't know how you might would cover Thin Lizzy at least not in one sitting, unless you did focus primarily on Gorham's work. And Sykes himself has his Thin Lizzy & Whitesnake eras, but also his Blue Murder & solo material. As for Vivian Campbell, I'm not familiar with his Def Leppard work, but his Dio years are a different story, so, surely there's another one to consider between those 2 eras as well as his Riverdogs work. Irregardless, it is always interesting to see what the next Chordplay, 34All, and the other intriguing ones you work in, will be. 😎 It's been a while since you did a Scales & Tales one; I've found usefulness from each I've watched to date.

That's got some really good songs"kittens got claws""sailing ships"is a great opus for the album, and Steve vai's acoustic playing is really good.
