Chorleywood - Least Used Metropolitan Line Station

We're counting down the least used stations line by line on the London Underground, this time to the Metropolitan and the quaintness that is Chorleywood.
You can download the Entry & Exit figures for all Tube Stations here: tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publicat... (although, it will obviously spoil the series for you if you look ahead at the figures!)
Note: The Waterloo & City Line won't be done, as it's only two two stations and it's figures are ridiculously high, because the stations are Waterloo and Bank.
There's scope though to do 'Least Used...' on the Overground, DLR and Trams.

I was absolutely fascinated by this video, since I grew up in Chorleywood in the 60's and used the station everyday to get to school (secondary). Steam trains of course, the electric line then began at Rickmansworth one station down towards London, which is where I got off to go to school. I can also remember the electrification of the line to Amersham and the last steam train off Rickmansworth. In those days the Metropolitan ran to Aylesbury while the (now) British rail went through to Rotherham and Sheffield. Every day there was a steam express from Marylebone called "The Master Cutler" going through to Sheffield. I travelled on it once when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I would like to thank you so much for bringing back these memories of my childhood. I haven't been to Chorleywood for some thirty years, and seeing it again was marvellous. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

It is worth remembering that at one time this line carried both Metropolitan Railway trains, and those of the Great Central. The Metropolitan went much further than today - through Aylesbury, to Quainton Road, and had a branch to Brill, in Buckinghamshire, and had plans to extend that to Oxford. Even I can remember when those Aylesbury trains would have been run by London Transport. Both the mentioned railways were, at one time, Chaired by Sir Edward Watkin, and his plan was to run trains from Manchester and Sheffield along this line, and then through London via the Metropolitan line onwards to the south coast and a Channel Tunnel to France, Paris, and beyond. They even got as far as test digs for the tunnel before the government quashed this idea on security grounds. So Chorleywood might not have been just a sleepy little station on the tube!

If only it was as simple as a missing hand rail with the 710s, or the Crossrail 345s for that matter. It would be an easy fix. I was chatting to a guy on a train recently, we past a Bombardier facility, he said "awful company". He dealt with them daily and said that both the company and their products are terrible to deal with. "Nothing like the BR days" he said. Apparently spare parts can take ages, unlike the old BR days where central stores would have it at the depot ASAP. Says a lot really.

One theory for the decrease Geoff: Met lines tend to serve localised stations, whereas the Chiltern Trains use mostly their own rails to head straight towards London. My theory is that cycling has had a major uptick recently and those that might jump on the tube to, say, travel to the next met line station may now choose to cycle instead. The Chiltern Railways service will always see regular commuters direct to the capital though so you will see only minor changes.

Fascinating. I pass through Chorley Wood (emphasis on the 'wood' - they even get it wrong on the train announcements) whenever I go to London. I don't think I've got on or off there and I've been travelling that line for 60+ years. There is only one thing I'd disagree with. There's no way to tell if a passenger gets on a Met or a Chiltern train once they've gone through the barrier.

Roding Valley, then :-) Has that 25% drop anything to do with the fare structure on the Overground from Watford Junction?
@sihollett
@sihollett 5 жыл бұрын
2017 is long after LO took over the DC lines and closer stations like Watford haven't seen drops - I doubt there was a sudden drop in passengers at Chorleywood because of the Overground a good 15 minutes drive away (as a bare minimum!). I don't know what it is (methodological or demographic changes would surely affect other nearby stations, and there's not been any local changes that would be obvious causes of a 2017 decline, especially one of this size), but I know it's not TfL fares on the DC lines!
@officialmcdeath
@officialmcdeath 5 жыл бұрын
@@sihollett true - my thought was that an evolution of the fare structure might have caused the swing - it has been pointed out elsewhere that Rickmansworth saw a corresponding increase - maybe parking there became easier?

@Gary Chapman Roding Valley has a much worse service - with only a handful of direct trains at peak times with off peak being infrequent and indirect. It's also not far from the other two (I used to travel regularly to some where where it was the closest tube, but Woodford wasn't much further and saved a final change or going the long way round via Hainault, so I used it only once), so its supposed catchment is contributing to the busyness of the other two.

Have you ever driven to Watford from Chorleywood to catch a train to London? It would be insane to travel that far. It is (on a good day) 20 mins drive.

I'm guessing that they count Chiltern passengers as ones coming in at Marylebone, Great Missenden, Wendover, Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury and Aylesbury Vale Parkway. Although, of that list, only Aylesbury and Marylebone actually have ticket barriers

Maybe geoff obviously took notice that it says “station steps” but he worded it differently to us. He did actually state that the sign didn’t at least say “to the tube station” so that might be his way of acknowledging ‘that’, to us.
