Correct. Lancaster dropped him for shit defence, the same shit defence that cost us dearly in WC ‘11. Due to being the arch poacher he plays in great teams like Sarries and Toulon where his defence is hidden and not exposed by being in a great defensive team. But his defence still isn’t the best and, coupled with his all round play, may be the reason he doesn’t get selected. He’s a great luxury to have to sniff out tries but can be a liability. I’m sure people will now give me loads of shit but it’s just an opinion, chill out guys ✌️

Dan Patterson of course it is when playing for sarries and Toulon where your defensive frailties are covered up in very good defensive teams and you are given a shit load of tries/overlaps, anyone would get a decent record that way. He just doesn’t have the all round game of Watson, Daly, May or Nowell. In football, strikers just need to score, not defend. In rugby, wingers and fullbacks need to defend... Ashton can’t!

But when, not if, England are in trouble in the WC, after 50-60 minutes, I would rather have Cipriani coming off the bench to add the bit of magic that only he provides as an English 10.. Definitely Ford isn't good enough, and Marcus Smith isn't ready. He's been easily the best 10 in Europe this season, and not choked once, as his fellow pros, and commentators have voted. As much as I like Farrell, he's not the heartbeat of Sarries, thats Brad Barritt, and if you put cips in that side I'm certain they would still be at least as great, if not more so..

Russell us the nearest to Cipriani I've seen for mercurial play, but his game management isn't great if not playing all out attack. Farrell owns the England 10 shirt deservedly, but doesn't have that extra spark that Cipriani has, and would bring to the WC. He can change a game in the blink of an eye, and I believe he's needed to come off the bench in the WC during difficult games.. he has been the best club 10 in Europe this season, as shown by the accolades he's picked up, especially from his fellow pros...

@wildebest I watch pro14, super Rugby, French top 14 and some televised French federale games when televised.. I also played at a very good level, albeit many years ago, and don't disagree with your assessment of Farrell at all, but if we're to have a chance of winning the WC, we need to offer something different at times.. I know all the arguments against Goode, but to say he's had a fair go is unconvincing to say the least.. There's a very good reason he plays at 15 for Sarries ahead of Liam Williams. He's the consummate 15 because he has the extra and highly unusual skill set of being a very good playmaker with vision, who has played at 10 without any drop in performance.. He's deceptively quick, with amazing balance, strength for his size, good under the high ball, defensively solid, and if its to be believed the first name on the team sheet at Sarries.. I know why Cipriani doesn't play more for England, but my argument is that when England need a game changer in the WC if/when they get to the latter stages and are maybe behind at 55-60 minutes, I would want him coming off the bench rather than any other English 10.. Ford isn't good enough, and Marcus Smith is a great prospect, but lacks experience for the latter stages of a WC..
