You can definitely tell Chris is classically trained, and hes absolutely amazing. but one thing i always loved about hearing Marty's solos is the speed drops and the slight slides he did, which gave it almost a sitar like sound. But both amazing guitarists, i love them both.

Dude that is so true. I have been playing for 3+ years and am fairly progressed but even as an intermediate seeing players like Broderick and Malmsteen make me wanna just give up Cuz no matter how long you play, mos people can't do this kinda crazy tapping combined with sweeps. I have found though with guitar it doesn't matter about your skill level compared to others as long as what you're playing sounds good and you enjoy it..

I've learned over the years it does not really matter how long one has been playing. What matters is the amount of time they practice and what their talent level is, which basically boils down to how many nerve endings they have in their hands, and these are people I call naturals. I was a natural skier, but am definitely not a natural when it comes to guitar. It took me 5 years to get where people wouldn't walk away when i started trying to play. Hopefully, you are a natural.

I'm still trying to figure out what "playing with your heart" means. Does that mean not knowing any scales or music and just sitting there playing pentatonic scales and bends? Chris Broderick can play and write out anything that comes to his mind, or his "heart" - by the way, your heart just pumps blood, that's all it does.

Ha, good point man. Seems like a lot of people try to put down great guitarist by saying that they don't play from their heart, bullshit. I do admire some players who aren't as skilled but have good "feel" or "groove," but I also really admire the guys like Chris Broderick who are technical masters. You certainly can't take anything away from a guy just because he is more technically proficient than most people dream of being.

@beefcakes42

I always used my whole arm to pick, but I recently got a dean dean from hell dimebag guitar, and that really helped me use my wrist more than my arm because there wasn't as much body to rest my arm on to pick, so I pretty much had to change the way I picked just because of the shape of the guitar, so whenever I play my Ibanez I notice how much better my picking is compared to before...just my 2 cents.

With all do respect to Chris , he just doesn't have that "touch" that Megadeth guitar players need to have. Chris Poland has some crazy chromatic tricks , jazzy licks and crazy bends , Marty is a melodic genius that combines shredding with emotions in a way no other guitarist can , and don't get me started on the fact that Mustaine can sing and play stuff like Take No Prisoners at the same time , including mind-blowing solos like Holy Wars ... and Chris ... he has biceps and can sweep.

Chris's pick clip isn't available as of Jan '12. There's something called a "jam kat" you could check out. Fits on the index finger and flips up and down w/the thumb. About $15 I think. I hope Chris can get his on the market soon.

Do what I did, find how you the pick, and glue some all-round to the pick so it holds it roughly the same way. I prefer nylon coated because it sticks better and dampens vibrations so it doesn't come off as easily. It isn't perfect but it should work until the real one is released.

What's weird is I began on a 4-string ukulele when I was 7 (born in Hawaii), then went to a 7-string acoustic that was owned my my teacher, a chinese man name Kin Fan, then eventually went to a 6 string. My bros in high school used to laugh at me when I talked about a 7-string back in the 80s, saying I had done too many shrooms...

Well it's not hard to grasp. It's simple patterns he's just phrased them differently. He states the arpeggiated chords, and gives a slower example of how he's playing it. It's not about people taking patterns from the video, a real shredder would derive phrasings and potential technical extensions of a simple idea.
