Chris Buck is nothing short of a genius. He plays in such a fluid, soulful way.One of the greats of our time.
@michael1
@michael1 2 ай бұрын
It's pleasant random noodling. It sounds OK but I personally think it lacks any kind of musical direction. It doesn't come across as a piece of music. It's like if someone picks up a guitar in a guitar shop and starts playing if they don't play someone else's music they'll typically play some pentatonic stuff you kind of know they're not really playing anything they're just noodling. All the Anderton's guitarists do this too - I think that's possibly because they don't want to play famous riffs for fear of copyright issues and they're not very skilled musically to create something. I think it's marked if you see Guthrie Govan demonstrating his guitar - he has far more ability to set a tone on his guitar and construct a piece of music rather than just noodling - and there's a marked difference even compared with he just noodles if, for example, he's talking about that very subject of how people use the pentatonic scale. But, it seems unlikely given that pretty much every guitar player on the planet who has been playing for more than a few months can do this that it's a sign of genius. Right? A few musicians write pieces of music. They'll note that if, say, you wanted to play rhapsody in blue by Gershwin there's a much more complicated structure, it's not just noodling notes from a scale. When you look at the structure of a random noodle vs a composition I think it self evident that the former is lesser and not only requires far less of the performer but far less of the listener too. I'd argue that, if there's a genius playing the guitar that his solo pieces will sound like this complex, structured music and not like random pentatonic noodling. Like Ted Greene's pieces do, for example. So that genius can't be Chris Buck. The only structure I see in evidence is from the rest of his band. When they're playing the verses and choruses then the random noodling thing stops for a bit. Albeit the music is not of the high complexity that you'd normally associate with genius is it? It's very straightforward popular music - nothing wrong with it, it has an audience but it's not genius. And even if it took a genius 50 years or more ago to invent it, 5+ decades later pretty much anyone can do it after a short amount of study. It's like in maths maybe Pythagoras was a genius to note some facts about triangles but you can teach his formula to school children now - these children are not geniuses. In more complex music, e.g a Beethoven piano sonata you can see the structure on the page and most definitely hear it. How he plays a motif and later refers to it. There are multiple parts in different registers creating rhythm, counterpoint and harmony even on the same instrument. It's like listening to for the love of god or cliffs of dover - the evidence of composition is there. Noodling? It sounds pleasant enough but it's not on the same level musically is it? Whereas whenever I hear Chris play anything he's just noodling some pentatonic stuff. It's technically ok he's clean, the strings are being fretted properly etc, but it's never a piece of music. I won't remember anything he played 2 minutes after hearing it and you can't really tell one bit of his noodling from the next. I'd suggest that's mostly because creating and playing a piece of music is much more difficult both to come up with and to perform than noodling randomly is. If you search any number of youtube guitarists who have learned a few "jazzy" chords they are playing them randomly. It's rare to find one who can use them to create a piece of music - and even if they get a backing track (which is a ready made structure) they just noodle over the top - and that is the easiest part of learning guitar. Single note soloing without any structure or aim.

@@michael1 have you heard any of his music?
@michael1
@michael1 2 ай бұрын
@@SorenAraujo I've heard him playing the guitar in numerous settings, this video being one and others where there's a couple of people singing a drummer and a bass player which I assumed was a band and no, I've never heard any music per se in these contexts just someone noodling away random stuff. Unfortunately if you're interested in yamaha revstar and start searching for the guitar youtube starts feeding you this stuff.

I notice that there seems to be a lot of young players of the youtube generation who has this sorta sliding rather than hammer on/off style. You see him do it here a lot, but there's also that girl that Mayer did a shout out for that's pretty awesome as well. They both seem to hit that style and its not quite how I've seen a guy like Hendrix or SRV do it in the sense of as often. Lends a different vibe to their play despite it often being in a style we're familair with.

@@LeviGuitar Yes, beyond that little way of playing licks he has a way of phrasing things. He's already his own player where he's navigated all his influences and is more than just a sum of them.
