Chris, This is sensational and so helpful for those of us who are just starting out. You and Stefan Ulbricht are my two favorite players and the more that all of us can learn from you guys the better. I hope you put up more tutorials. Now with so many of us stuck at home due to the pandemic it's a great time to practice and learn from the masters. Personally I would love it if you could do a video that would address the subject of how to start playing boogie woogie if you are true novice. Thank you again for posting this excellent video. So if I want to play the chords I have to memorize or learn how many sharps and or flats make up any particular scale. Is that right? If you can you recommend some explanatory or very slow demonstration material as you slowly talk it through. I would greatly appreciate the advice that you might give me. Than you in advance for your efforts and time.

Chris, I've been practicing away oh your left hand pattern and am getting better! I have two questions: 1. At 4:55 in your video you demonstrate playing chords with the right hand and it looks like you play four different ones. Can you list what chords they are so I can practice that? 2. At 6:13 in your video, where you are playing fast, you add a 4th left hand move that looks to be on "D" if I'm correct. I've learned the C-F-G pattern but where and how do I integrate this lower D chord? Thanks, Chris, this is just too darn much fun even though at this point I pretty much suck! William Paxton
@InternationalBoogieNights3 жыл бұрын
Hi William. Thanks for your message. Here are the chords I use in this video: C7-chord in the 3rd inversion. => G, Bb, C, E F7-chord with the 9th (G) => G, A, C and Eb G7-chord => F, B, D My other video might be also interesting for you about chords:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMxoY5uS3ZnahHk.html Your second question I'm not sure if I understand you. Since 6:13 the video is already finish. Maybe you can send me the right time code then I can have a loot what you mean. OK?
@williampaxton8713 жыл бұрын
@@InternationalBoogieNights Chris, Sorry about the time code screw up. The part where you change the pattern is at 5:38. It's a lower sounding chord, "G" perhaps?
@InternationalBoogieNights3 жыл бұрын
@@williampaxton871 Hi William. Yes right, in this part I'm going to the lower G. This is also possible. Just one octave lower...

Nice! Thanks Chris. Working on exactly this left hand for the last couple of weeks, but struggle with too much tension when speeding up, which affects the swing, groove and punch. Any recommendations ?
@InternationalBoogieNights4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :-) Start very slow with a metronome. For example with 100 bpm, next day with 110 bpm etc. But don't rise the tempo if you don't feel comfortable with the "slower" tempo! Try it!

One strategy I use that I wish I knew about years ago is to practice the left hand pattern with all notes extremely staccato(light/as short of a sound as possible for each note). It won't sound natural, but along with the metronome and slower tempo you're already doing, it gets the clarity/power going in the fingers. Then I go back and play it "regular" with the "boogie woogie" groove sound. I don't know if that made any sense lol, but it has helped me immensely.

Hi Chris. I have a question. When you play this pattern should the fingers on our left hand be just slightly bent? I am finding from typing for so many years that my fingers naturally bend in as if they are hitting keyboard keys and I don't think that's correct for piano. I'm getting the pattern down to some degree but don't want to get locked into any bad habits sicne I'm just a beginner. Any thoughts/advice/suggestions? Bill
@InternationalBoogieNights4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill. Thanks for your message. I would say the finger hast to be slightly bent yes. But it depends on your hands/fingers. It has to feel comfortable and natural for you. I know many boogie piano players and everybody is playing this pattern a little bit different. As you can see on my video, my fingers are bent a bit. I just tried to define how much I bend the fingers. I would explain it like this: stretch your fingers totally and then relax...this is the natural and ergonomically correct position...in this position you should play. I hope this helps... Kind regards, Chris

Chris, No wonder you are so good. That is exactly what I needed. I just started working from home in my job so I end my "work" day by practicing along with your videos for an hour. Right now I stink but when I get better and am not totally embarrassed I'll send you a video. Thanks for getting back to me. Bill

Chris, I have been practicing diligently all week and am starting to actually play something that doesn't sound like my cat walking across the keys. However, having never played the piano before I am a little befuddled by exactly how the fingers of my left hand move across the keys. Your friend Jorg Heggemen really stabs at the keys with a lot of elbow action while your style is much more relaxed. It looks to me from the video that you sort of rotate your left palm while moving your fingers, is that correct? I hate to ask but is there any way you can do a video showing your technique for playing these left hand patterns, maybe from a keyboard point of view? As long as I'm learning from the best I want to do this right form the start. This is really fun by the way. Bill
