By request: Chris first hints at his Leno impression towards the end of his portrayal as Mummenschanz's "Gunther" from June 18, 1986. He then goes full-Leno four months later on October 2. Jay evens the score two weeks later on October 14.

@@RJLKMRD True. In that film he was at the high end of the quality performance spectrum. Brett Favre at the other. Another good performance often overlooked is by W. Earl Brown who played Warren. I thought it was so funny when after many years he remembers and blurts out "Beans and franks!"

This was a period in Chris’ career when he was experimental and sarcastic. He always had two voices, one seemingly normal, and another voice which was hypercritical of all the clichés of the entertainment industry, and media in general, almost as skewed as Andy Kaufman, but a little more straightforward and acceptable, not as deceitfully acerbic.

Sean Parsons : To give up your art or your principles for cash or some other reward. I’m a musician but I had to work as a schoolteacher a lot in order to pay bills. Jay Leno loves old cars and trucks; he used his comedy skills to pay for that hobby. That’s “selling out”? (Edit: To me “selling out” means betraying someone or yourself in order to profit.)

Robert Parker : We’re going to have to agree to disagree on Leno. I watched some U.S. government officials being grilled by Tucker Carlson of Fox news because they had advance info about the Corona virus and so sold a lot of their stocks. That’s “selling out” their constituents. Profiting by hurting someone else, or allowing them to be hurt, that’s selling out to me; not telling jokes to make money.

It was inevitable that the show ran out of creative steam being on for so many years, and Dave has said in interviews he changed his focus in the later years, not working 100% of the time on the show. He also didn't have talent like Chris Elliott, which was pure comic genius. Late night television now is an uwatchable wasteland. Craig Ferguson was the last of the innovators.

Letterman on NBC used to have like 2 sort of comedy type things mixed into the show, but that gradually fizzled out and seemed like there was less of it or it was less funny when he was bigtime on CBS.

Saw Leno at Carnegie Hall twenty plus years ago. he was not a kid. The tickets were a gift. I could not wait for his show to end. I was so depressed when he returned to do a 5 minute encore. Never liked his stand up. Liked him in American Hot Wax.

Yeah, the good old days. I think funny late night TV ended when Craig Ferguson left the airwaves in 2015. I mean, I don't like Trump either, but he's pretty much all late night comics talk about now. I think Stephen Colbert is the worst offender because he's obviously more intelligent than Fallon or Corden and should know better. As for Jimmy Kimmel, he's the best at kissing celebrity ass- the worthy successor to Arsenio Hall in that department. Other than that, there's nothing noteworthy about him. Nobody on TV takes risks anymore- NOBODY. That's why the networks are losing viewers to HBO and Netflix.
