By request: Chris Elliott's impersonation of Paul.
Paul Shaffer interview in Vulture, February 2022:
Q: You’ve been impersonated on SNL over the years: Gary Kroeger, Mark McKinney, Chris Kattan. Anyone get you especially right or wrong?
Paul: All of them capture elements of my bizarre character that I try to do. But there’s nothing like when Chris Elliott tried to do it on Letterman. He nailed me.

Chris Elliott is one of the rare examples of being a child of a famous entertainment industry parent and actually having talent equal to or greater. Many today don't know about his father Bob Elliott who was half of the comedy team "Bob and Ray" (with Ray Goulding). They were extremely hilarious and clever with all sorts of droll humor. I think some of the droll and deadpan humor was imparted to Chris Elliott.

I met Paul in a book store a few years ago and had a 90 minute conversation with him. It was during the writers’ strike and he was browsing the magazine rack as a customer. Just a pleasant, low-key, decent guy... no trace of that “cool hipster” vibe he conveys on the show. He wanted to know all about my amateur music career. We talked about Christmas (my holiday) and Hanukkah (his) and upon parting I jokingly wished him a very Merry Christmas, and he wished me a Happy Hanukkah. He is a real down to earth, polite and friendly guy.

From 1995 to his heart surgery, and then towards the last several years again, he could sit at his desk and tell a story for 10 minutes, and I'd be enraptured and in stitches. He never really did that on NBC did he?

I think more towards the end, Adam. He would do things like ask Paul what he was doing over the weekend and Paul would tell him and then Dave would say "I'm going to fry up some bacon and watch televised golf." Thanks for all these back-to-back Chris Elliott-as-Brando, then as Paul Shaffer, etc...what great memories of back in the mid-80s, when Letterman & Late Night, in general, was at its peak! This was THE best time to stay up until, well, midnight, if you were in certain places, IDK when, if you lived on the coast... I remember, back in high school, friends talking about these Chris Elliott skits, when he'd pop out on to the set as "Marlon Brando", of course, the funny part of it is, the real Brando would never have been so wacky. But that's wherein the humor lies. Ha ha....now I want to go try & find a bunch of the older Letterman shows when Larry "Bud" Melman used to show up from time to time (that wasn't his real name, either, which, in itself, was funny)!

His best impersonation ever. I suspect Paul wasn't very amused but acted nonplussed about it.

Hilarious then, hilarious now. Notable that this is two bits going on at the same time, Elliott's impression and Small Town News. And both are funny. Show was genius in the late '80s.
