no one shld ever say Chris was not a power player: to be able to find the sweet spot every time and to hit that hard and accurately with a wooden racket: I mean seriously - we have not even begun discussing her phenomenal movement and uncanny anticipation

It's a shame that nobody comes to the net any more so we see so few passing shots these days. On balance, I think Monica Seles had better passing shots because she was able to hit with more topspin and get more acute angles.

Evert was always quick. It just doesn't always appear so because her anticipation was second to none so she was generally moving before her opponent had struck the ball. Great video. Thank you

I'm not. She had a very good first serve, good second serve for that time period, and she was very consistent. Her groundies didn't do much, but for most players it was hard for them to do anything with them and Pam would come forward before they could. It's a shame Pam never really was able to improve her groundies, as she would have done even better. That backhand passing shot of hers was horrible. Graf used to knife her backhand much harder and more accurately.

It's amazing that Pam is ALREADY using an oversized racket, but Chris would wait until 1984 to switch. I am convinced Chris would've never, ever lost to Martina 13 times in a row if she had switched to graphite earlier.

WTT was Billie Jean's "pet child" and all the top players on the tour supported it. Chris has admitted in hindsight had she not played WTT, she most surely would've won the French Opens during years 1976-1978, esp 1976 when she won Wimbledon and U.S. Open, the only year she won both together. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but maybe it's fate Chris and Martina both ended with 18 Grand Slam titles apiece. Also, the French and Australian Opens didn't have the prestige back then as they do today.

I love how Bud refers to the Clairol Crown over and over. It makes you think about their hairdos much more than one should lol I remember he got chided when he kept referring to the fact that Monica Seles won the French Open three times with three different hairdos and he was told he was spending too much time under the hair dryer lol

She was always one of the top 5-7 fastest players on the tour, because 1) she got off the mark earlier, secondary to that anticipation. 2) She also had impeccable footwork, making the most of each step, with each movement biomechanically balanced and purposeful. Her real advantage over the rest of those 5-7 faster players was in her perfect racket preparation and shot selection once she got there. How many faster players are either not mentally or physically ready to hit it and capitalize.

Don't underestimate her. She had some early victories over Martina. While her strokes were unorthodox, they were fairly solid. True, she was no powerhouse, she used slice/underspin very effectively often sending sliders to either wing or down the center to keep angles down and the tragectory of passes higher over the net. A very smart tactician, she lacked the total confidence to win the big matches until she fully matured. She also moved like a buffalo.

Someone commented below about Shriver being every bit as good at serve and volley as Martina. I have to disagree. Martina had a more forceful first volley, really than anyone in the game. Yes, Martina's speed was superior, as was her agility. Also, Martina had better, more forcing groundstrokes than Shriver that allowed her to come in on better approach shots, putting Chris and other players more out of position.

She had a winning percentage of far over 90% between 74-77 and was over 90% 78. Always was the number one player during that years and also won three doubles grand slam titles. Considering there great facts it is simply a joke that somone can seriously say that Serena or Seles even came close to such dominance!! The only difference between Martina and Chris was that Chris was dominant during a time when matches werent regularly played on TV and Martina wasn't able to reach finals regularly!

I have to strongly agree on that statement. With the wooden racket Chris had so much more control and er shotmaking was much more natural than with the late graphite racket. She had to adjust her game to the new material and she certainly did it fine and stayed on top of the game but if she had done it earlier than she would have been certainly a much stronger opponent for martina during her 1983-1984 dominant years. The change of material was the main reason why Chris lost the number one spot.

Yes, thank you!! This is pretty much THE proof of why Evert was a better player than Martina... Nav's particular strengths were perfectly structured to beat Chris; a natural advantage in how their games matched up. So even when everyone including Martina would admit Evert was superior (79-81), she STILL had a 4-match h2h lead in their matches! To think even with the shutout 83/84, Nav ended their 80 matches only 2 further ahead than that 10-6 margin is amazing!! Funny math 21-4+13=17 (4 margin).

If we want to talk records here, by all counts Chris should have ended up with many more GS titles than Martina. Remember the years in Paris Chris didn't play because of WTT. She surely would have amassed somewhere in the neighborhool of 22-24 majors. Where was Martina then?

Chris Evert was Annika Sorenstam that year. You couldn't get a ball by her that year. I think training with John Lloyd and other male tennis players helped as well as Kathy Smith. But I thought she stated to lose her "fairway chip shots (service box to service box cross court) and the putter volley shots. Faster surfaces, better strings, and better athletes started to show besides the rackets.

Pam was every bit as good a serve and volley player as Martina. But the difference between the two of them is the same difference between Martina and all the other players on tour that Chris played. Martina had "blazing speed." I saw Martina get to winning shots hit by Chris + hit winners off of them. Martina not only got to shots other players never could but she got there in time to hit winners. THAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE. Chris was able to match Martina later because she became more aggressive.
@ralphbourgeois5875

Martina also had much better groundstrokes than Pam. Even though both were serve and volleyers this was important since a serve and volleyer still had to be able to return well, pass well if needed, rally well enough to stay in points, and have good enough approach shots to get into the net off of. Pam often had to come in off a bluff and had a hard time getting to the net when she didnt hit a great first serve and her ground game wasnt strong enough.

To Deep an Hard - they are playing with wood rackets - they do not have the cheap unearned power of today's rackets ! Chris played 19 years and was in top three for 17 of them - in top two for 12 , number one for 6?- your judging speed by today's rackets - it takes incredible skill to hit with a wood racket - your too dense ( deep and hard ) to figure this out

People on here trying to talk about which player dominated. If you wanna talk about "dominance", no one, not even the likes of Graf, Seles, Serena, will have a season Navratilova had in 1982-84. 1983 especially, with ONE LOSS all year. In 84, she had only TWO losses, 3 losses in 82. Try to top THAT. And Navratilova played a full year-long schedule, including the winter indoor circuit, something Evert tend to skip in her schedule.

It depend how one defines 'better'. If you define it by peak play, then you are discounting the losses accrued to get there, and those that you accrued on the way down. Careers are about every match you play from day one to day last. Evert's career stats show far fewer hiccups at every stage than any open erechampion.

Sorry Patrick but that is simply a joke!! Neither Serena nor Seles ever were as dominant as Chris was between 1974-1978.She won ) Grand slam titles three WTA Championchip titles although she did not even enter the Australian Open except from 74 and skipped the french from 76-78. She had a 125 match winning streak on clay between 1973-1979 and won 5 Family Circle Cups and also won over 100 matches only in 74 with a match winning streak of 54 which is still the second best mark in womens tennis.

I am not a Seles fan but in 91-92 she was more dominant than Chris ever was in any year, and she did it facing another great like Graf while Navratilova was not up to snuff yet during Evert's best years of 74-77 and Court and King were way past their best. I still cant imagine Seles would have even close to the staying power of Evert even without the stabbing though.

Thats true and I never tended to reflect on that. My goal was to proof that Evert certainly dominated the scene more than Seles or Williams when they had their glory days. And it is perception if you take into account how many times these two played indoors and of course it has something to do with TV. During the time Chris absolutely dominated Martina only three matches of those two champions had been televised. When Martina got the upper hand they brought almost every match they played on TV.

how can it be so clear to folks who was better? so what martina ended up ahead h2h. they split their last 10 matches. martina was the better athlete and was talented; but chris (did you see the chris-pam shriver match) whooped that ass with a wooden racket. give martina a wooden racquet, would that have happened. the more that i watch the old chris evert, the more i admire her game. i think chris was much better than martina, but i am a chris evert fan. most of their matches were played on martina's favorite surfaces (grass and carpet). martina had to turn into the hulk to beat chris. now how fair is that? lmao. they were both great. who ended up with more singles titles? oh. now if someone really wants to see pam get that butt beat, watch the newport 1985 final. goooooooooooo CHRIS!!

good post. a 43-37 head to head edge in 80 matches from 1973 to 1988 is hardly a OVERWHELMING advantage to martina.. what hurt's chris is of course the 13 match losing streak, however even that could be taken into context.. evert playing with a wood racket (of course that's not martina's fault), not in the shape to compete with martina during that time, etcetera) yes, i also think one needs to dissect their head to head record.. the majority of the time they played on surfaces that DID favor martina.. i would say from 1985 to 1988 they were pretty much even.. the victor of the match usually being dependent on what surface they played on.... in the 30 to 30 episode with them, evert did admit that martina's best day was better then her best day (as much as she hates to admit that she added)... however, while i guess evert would know more then all of us, i also think evert had/has a HUGE tendency for whatever reason to downplay her talent, her records, her ability since she retired? why i have no idea! it's almost like she wants to prove to the public that she has moved on and is "better than that" meaning she has a full life now and doesn't look back like some retired old champion pining for glory? heck, more then a few times when she is broadcasting she EVEN gets her own record and matches wrong? for example on 30 to 30 she said she lost to martina 14 times in a row? it wasn't 14, it was 13... recently she mentioned how nervous she was when she played her first wimbledon final against king and she lost 6-0, 6-3. it was 7-5 in that last set.. she has made other errors as well remembering matches and scores and results from her career? how one can NOT remember HUGE matches in a HUGE career is beyond me! i mean i'm just a big ole tennis fan and i can remember this stuff! laugh!..so i tend to downplay evert's own remarks on who was better on their best day...i think evert should really have said "well it depends on the surface".. does anyone think evert at her all time best on clay would lose to martina? i don't... i think evert could and should defend herself more not only in terms of her rivalry with martina but in any discussion on goat...

thomas schmitz I think It was the kind of dominance that Martina showed which Evert couldn’t match that’s why Evert said “her best days are better than mine”. When Evert had the 55 win streak, Navratilova bettered it with a 74 winning streak which still stands today as a record, male or female. Then there’s the modern slam. Chris never accomplished winning 4 majors/slams in n a row. Martina not only did 4, she did 6 in a row and had Sukova not upset her at the 84 Australian, Martina could have won that too. And talk about dominance on one surface, Evert only won the French 7 times whereas Martina won Wimbledon 9 times (starting from the 70’s and ending in the 90’s. even on the slow clay, Martina whipped Evert more than once - she beat Evert 6-2 6-0 on Amelia Island (same place where Evert double bageled Martina in 1980 or 1981), then again at the 84 French Final (6-3 6-1). And though Evert would beat Martina at the French again in 85 & 86 (both in 3 sets), Evert had not been able to beat Navratilova so dominantly on grass after 1980. Then again in the 90’s, talk about “longevity” when Navratilova was past her prime at 36-37, she still had convincing wins against the prime Graf, Seles, Sanchez, Sabatini. She beat Graf and Sanchez at the 91 US Open (only to ran out of gas against a tough Seles in the finals) and actually beat Seles and Graf in 1993 (both on indoor carpet). And on her last year being a singles pro, she reached the 1994 Wimbledon final (beating the tough grass courter Novotna along the way). Evert at 34 could not beat Graf and Sabatini any longer. She did beat a 15 year old Seles at her last US Open but Evert’s game at that stage lacked a powerful or point ending shot to make her competitive with the young guns (Graf, Seles, Sabatini). That’s why Navratilova is better than Evert. And that’s why Evert conceded that Martina’s best days were better than hers. Lastly, Martina spent more weeks as Number 1 than Chris and Martina became the year end number 1 more times than Chris.

Shriver looks like a clumsy big ox at the net and around the baseline. Yeah, she had a nice serve, but not much punch behind her groundies. No wonder she never won any major slam tournaments, though she had some big wins over the years. She was finally able to beat Chris in the late 80's, but by then Evert was near retirement. To Shriver's credit, she's thriving now as a tennis commentator, who has interesting things to say. Luv Billie Jean as a commentator, she should've done more. Pity.

What she should have ended up with supposedly and what she really ended up with are two different things. You continuously make excuses for when Chris loses instead of giving credit where credit is due. In terms of being a total tennis player, not only did Martina win head to head, she won many more doubles and mixed doubles titles. Chris was a great player, but slightly behind Martina overall. This is what the facts show, not some silly queen's desire to pump up his favorite diva.

As much as I respect Chris who is a great player and great lady and had an amazing career, even at her best and peak years she never dominated to the extent of Navratilova or Graf in theirs (or Lenglen, Wills, Connolly, or Court for that matter), nor reached the level of tennis that Navratilova, Serena, Graf, and even Seles reached in their best years.
