When Pam Shriver complained to the press during the 1985 Wimbledon fortnight that she was always ending up playing Martina Navratilova at big events, and never Chris Evert -it had been over 2 years since Evert & Shriver had played- the press interpreted it as a challenge to the new #1 ranked Evert, and Chris did indeed take special notice of the comment. By the end, Shriver probably was glad she could instead play Martina, as Chris dished out one of the stunners of the '85 season in front of the Tennis Hall of fame crowd in Newport, RI.
Bud Collins & Mary Carillo commentate the match, with dvd footage provided by chrisevert.net

Chris was so great in so many ways, but digging deep, pulling herself back, and finding a way back to beating Martina in 1985, and getting back to number one in the world is, for me, unbelievably impressive. You can see the results here: she's just so sharp.

Chris was such a great competitor. Whenever anyone challenged her reputation, or if she lost to anyone - the next time she played them she would be extra hungry for the win. She had "reputation" matches with Hana (Mandlikova), Bonnie Gadusek and Pam Shriver over the years. In 1984 everyone began writing her off - losing to Manuela Maleeva and having almighty struggles against Lisa Bonder and Carling Bassett. It was great to see her take the No1 spot again in 1985.

I forgot to mention in my posting that Chris's consistent shot-making was equaled by her steely toughness and resolve. And, as a ranked junior and college player myself growing up watching her and the like of the era, I always loved that she and Connors just seemed like such patriotic and "American" tennis. They represented the best of American tennis and toughness. Plus, she was sexy as hell and had great legs.

niev300 Think about it. Evert entered 18 Wimbledons (1972-1989) on grass and 5 Australians on grass and 4 US Opens played on grass (71-74) . In those 27 efforts, she reached the penultimate round 26. You read that right, On only one occasion ( 1983 Wimbledon), did she fail to make the semifinals. In fact she reached the finals in all 5 of those Aussies and in 7 of those Wimbledons. Who did she lose those 12 finals to? Goolagong, King, and Navratilova. That's the list. One can claim that Evert came along in a era, with very little real depth on clay courts on the women's side, but it is hard to argue that she got 'lucky' with the kind of great serve/volleyers that surrounded her all through her career. There were minefields throughout all those draws, yet she remained incredibly consistent for a baseliner raised on slow green clay.

Chris was an excellent grass court player, as her 3 titles and seven runner-up appearances at Wimbledon testify, as does her 2 grass court majors at the Australian Open ('82 beating Martina and '84 beating Sukova.) So, the woman has FIVE grass court Slam titles under her belt, though she truly should have won at least two or three more Wimbledons (the 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1985 Wimbledons come to mind as having been especially winnable for her, based upon her ranking at each juncture, the draws she faced, momentum, and actual leads that were squandered.) But part of the glory of Evert was that her booming, immaculate, dictating baseline game (with those brilliant angles and passing shot winners) translated brilliantly to surfaces. In this match, Shriver hadn't yet played the super-fit, "graphite Pro Staff"-wielding Chris, and she got spanked royally. Evert was a rejuvenated force; this match and her reclamation of the No. 1 ranking proved it. Now, if only she had been able to win that 1985 Australian Open final over Martina, when both were vying for the year-end No. 1 ranking. Twas not to be ...

I've viewed this in passing, but just actually watched, and it's true, Chris was superb. I do think she was the greatest tennis player. Her winning percentage, to me, is the single most important statistic. It's the thing, the only thing, on which "greatest" of both sexes may be applied. Martina, wow. She was a wow, but not quite as consistent start to finish. That's the only thing I think that may separate them, proven by winning percentage. BUT... How right Pam is, and how careful Bud and Mary were to avoid the fact that Pam was right, on its face, because you can't hope to improve your odds against another player if you never get the chance. Her game and results show she could have made a difference if things had worked out a bit more evenly. Luck of the draw? Pam was greater than her results. My favorite Pam moment was her last point in her last singles match at Wimbledon. A double fault that bounced before it reached the net, but with such grace and humor and humanity in her response. It cemented a relationship that continues. I've always been a fan of Pam Shriver, and even told her so in passing at a La Salsa in Brentwood at lunch time. On my way out, passing her again, she sweetly said, "That was so nice." Maybe because she knew it to be true. What a great person she is.

I don't see where Pam did or said anything wrong. She was frstrated that she kept landing in Martina's quarter. It had been 3 years? since she had played Chris. Well why wouldn't you want to play Chris after such a long time? If you are a competitor you want to play the best. Besides the comments were made at Wimbledon. My guess is that Pam felt that if she had a chance to beat Chris it would be on grass. Makes sense to me.

I consider Steffi Graf or Margaret Court the greatest grass courter ever. Court has 19 slam titles on grass, far more than Martina. Graf had only 1 slam on grass during her career and won it 7 times. Martina had 2 and won only 12, an an average of 6 per slam, fewer than Steffi Graf.

We can argue about Margaret or Steffi all day being better on grass than Martina. But I have to agree with the comment below about Margaret’s 11 Aussie titles ringing a bit hollow when you consider the fields that entered those tournaments. Plus, the US Open was played on grass thru all of Court’s best years. I think Martina would have won at least 7 US Opens on grass. MN (and Chris, for that matter) skipped the Aussie at least 5 times in the 70s. Court should have won pretty much all of those Aussie titles .

@@thequinnster72 Court was really a huge choker at Wimbledon. Her Wimbledon record is actually weaker than Evert despite both having 3 titles. For someone whose game was perfectly built for grass and who was dominant not only at the joke Australian Open but at both the U.S Open on grass (won 5 times despite missing a whole bunch as nearly all her temporary retirements were mid year) and 5 French Opens on clay, her Wimbledon record is a huge dissapointment detracts from her overall legacy some. And yes the Australian Open was a joke back then. Although to be honest even if King and Bueno and all Court's main rivals played every single year I still think she wins 8 or 9. She had a huge home court advantage and loved the style of grass there, and was completely in her emotional comfort zone totally unlike Wimbledon, while King would not be able to muster the same emotion there which she needed to overcome Court's superior technical abilities. As for Graf she won 7 Wimbledons and was really about as dominant as Martina in her prime at Wimbledon, but against a pretty weak grass field with almost no grass courters. She probably would have beaten Martina's Wimbledon record without her knee problems, and the Seles stabbing is meaningless as she sucked on grass and was never a threat to Graf on it which goes again to the weak grass field of the day I refer to. I still probably would go with Martina on grass though. Her grass competition was not stellar by a long ways either, but atleast better than Graf's I think. Even Evert alone is enough for that.

Glad Evert beat Shriver (again!). Shriver would have to wait another 3 years to beat Evert, but this was near the very end of Chris's career before her retirement. Yeah, great job, Pam......backing up your blabber mouth claims by waiting till someone's retirement to beat them.

shihlin1 True about her reputation as a “Mouth,” but some of Pam’s frustrations were understandable. She arrived smack in the center of Navratilova’s rise in motivation and Evert’s ongoing excellence, in the 1978-1986 years, followed by the domination of Graf. She was a gawky player, but a bad-ass serve-and-volleyer with a lot of scrappy instincts. She got her wins over Martina and Tracy Austin and Hana Mandlikova back in the day, along with a consistently high ranking and a healthy number of tournament wins. She had the talent to win a Grand Slam singles event ... but only in the absence of Evert, Navrat, Austin, and Graf. The first two were almost never out of that major equation for the bulk of Pam’s career, and once Steffi got roaring ... forget it. (Though Pam does have to her credit a win over Steffi at her best, at the YEC). I actually think she was one of the better players (for her dangerous, attacking game alone) to never win a major and I imagine she knew that, too. And whined about it a “bit”.😄 It’s good to see her around these days, commentating, and she and Evert are closer friends than she and Martina, by all accounts.

Also when Pam said that Chris was not playing nearly as well as she was in 1985. She made the comment during the time Chris lost 13 times in a row to Navratilova, and was getting spanked in many of them, and in general seemed to be stagnant and even perhaps aging and past her prime, before her surge back in 1985. Who wouldnt rather play Chris than Martina at the time Pam said that. Bad luck for her to not get to play Chris in late 83 or early 84 when she was slumping.

Diana Levine except at the time Pam said that, Shriver herself had lost to Chris 13 times without beating her once. And Martina was beating EVERYONE in ‘83 and ‘84, going 128-1 (including a 54-Match win streak in ‘83 and a 74-Match win streak in ‘84) over about 14 months. It wasn’t just Chris she was beating

shriver did beat chris 3 times towards the end of her career. 2 times in 1987 and 1 time in 1988.. these were the closing year's of chrissie's career when she could play awesome and beat almost anyone and yet also lose to the likes of raffaella reggi, kate gompert, sylvia hanika, lori mcneil and yes shriver.. these ups and down and mental strength ebbing and the desire were factors in evert retiring when she did. in 1987 she dealt with a painful heel spur throughout the year too.

At 2-0 in the first set Pam must have felt good. Then Chris took 12 of the next 15.... (on grass)

I love it!! I always love when a trash talker gets beaten! As much as Pam Shriver played doubles with Martina, you would think she would have learned a few things about playing her. Did Pam ever beat Chris or Martina?? Thank God for Martina in doubles...otherwise, Pam would have had no career in tennis at all.

Jennifer actually has a much better record vs Serena than most other top players. She was better off playing Serena than Venus, Justine Henin, Davenport, perhaps even Mauresmo or Seles.

Pam was always a big mouth. Never the most gracious either. Doubt she would have publicly said she'd rather play Chris than Martina after this thrashing.

No. she has the best career win/loss percentage in modern tennis ( defined as open era). Evert has a 90% ( 89.96) but Margaret Court has a career 91.% which beats Evert.

Yet she beat Court regularly starting when she was 15 and Court had just won the Grand Slam. I think that eliminates Court from any GOAT discussion. 11 Australian Opens which nobody played give her 24 GS titles a huge asterisk.

@jondavwal13 But how can that be? Court has the most Slams, so she must be the GOAT. Isn’t that the logic with Djokovic? Only the Slams matter and the GOAT is the one with the most? Pardon my sarcasm.

Pam was horrible from the baseline. It is a joke she even dared try to play some points in this match strictly from the baseline with Chris. Even a top 100 player could probably beat Pam playing that way, her only hope was coming to the net off every ball she could.
