My entire life, my grandfather’s brother, my uncle Frank, ALWAYS told me EVERY SINGLE TIME I ever saw him (which was relatively frequently) that I was the “the best looking one in the family.” I had my son 10yrs ago, my son was like 6months at the time, I was 31yrs old. It was xmas, my uncle Frank, my dad, my husband & my brother who even in adulthood I never got along with (until the last 4yrs or so but at the time we still very much hated each other) & myself are in my parents living room when my uncle Frank said to me in the same adoring/loving tone as he always used to say it “you _were_ the best looking one in the family.” So like an a$$hole I TOTALLY set myself up by asking, “WERE?! As in not anymore?” & he goes, “Yeah, well, you look like a mom now…..well, im just gonna be honest with you……you’ve gained some weight.” At that moment, simultaneously; I died a little, my very stoic dad burst into laughter & my brother spit his drink out the way a person does when they unexpectedly hear the funniest thing they’ve ever heard mid sip. He wiped his face & said “I love you, uncle Frank”….he lived another like 6yrs, never again mentioned that I was or even that I used to be the best looking one in the family 😂🤣

Always ask the locals! Here on Maui, tourists will sign up to bike down from the dormant volcano, Haleakala. It is one of the steepest, most winding roads in the U.S. Some of the people who sign up have not been on a bike in years! They sign an ironclad waiver of responsibility. As an RN who worked at the one acute care hospital on the island for years, I could tell you some sad stories.

Misery the novel was one of the most uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing reads of my life. Annie Wilkes is even more crazy and horrific in the book, is all I'll say, if you haven't read it. I went through it in about a day when I was a teenager. Highly recommend.
