Chris Layton, esteemed drummer of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble and Experience Hendrix, came by the Reverb office to talk drums. First, Chris lays out the basics of the Texas Shuffle beat so prominent in Double Trouble's rhythm. Chris then discusses working with Stevie Ray Vaughan, the rerelease of the Live at Carnegie Hall record, and the new "Pride and Joy" exhibit now open at the Bullock Museum in Austin, Texas, curated by GRAMMY® at L.A. Live.

There is a picture of Chris Layton at Stevie Ray's funeral. Even though he is wearing sunglasses the expression on his face is so devastating. It's like extreme grief and disbelief. I love listening to SRV and Double Trouble. Such talent.....

SRV had only one drummer! Chris! My man Layton. Epitome of THE Texas blues drummer.I can't think of any other drummer that could replace SRV's drummer. The timing, the feel, the sound, and the drum licks were Chris Layton all-the-way! Think of the miles spent playing behind another legend. SRV picked and stayed with the same guy for a reason and it was obvious. A true legend and so underrated!

Man was I glad to see Chris is still playing. I first saw him with Stevie live when I was about 18 and they were just taking off and I caught a show I think in 84 or 85 at the Pier 6 Pavilion in downtown beautiful Baltimore Maryland on the water! I was blown away and being a young drummer myself I just had to get a souvenir from the show and managed to get the pair of sticks Chris used that night and they are one of my prize possessions to this day only the 18 yr old kid is now a 50 yr old man!!! Boy what a night!! I'll never forget. Thanks Chris for the memories!!!

The one thing that I've always felt in hindsight with SRV and Double Trouble is how Chris and Tommy really were a backing rhythm for Stevie to shine. Alot of other musicians in that role would probably want to have their time in the solo spotlight but they just kept the rhythm going.

Ive known Whipper since seventh grade band. I'm still deaf because of the drum section sitting behind me. Definitely underrated. Great soul and part of music history.

It's so nice to see how he plays his shuffle .I played in a lot bands that covered some SRV.Could never figure out exactly what Layton was doing. Wish we would of had utube when I was starting out some 50 years ago. I hope all the young people today appreciate the great drummers and learn from them.Me and my drumming friends wore out a lot of records ,cassette tapes and 8 tracks in the day trying to get are drum parts down.Now you can go to utube and watch these cats laying it down.That my friends is priceless.!!!

Same for guitar, I have a huge pile of vinyl had to buy the whole album for any new song to learn back in 85. I was lucky enough to see SRV in Providence RI around 85 or 86. Wish he was still with us.

I didn't see much ado about no museum..only tiny portion..but..I still miss Stevie Ray Vaughan..This legend was ahead of everyone else really..

Still Miss Stevie Ray so much!! Got to see him and double trouble play 4 times and they were some of the most intense and awe inspiring shows I've ever seen!

I love shuffle when the left hand is doing most of the work His shuffle on Empty Arms is the example I give to every drummer I play with about what I want in our cover band.

When SRV +Tommy & The Whipper broke in ‘83-‘84, they absolutely blew my mind and I wore out my copies of their 1st two LPs...a few years later and I was of age and partly because of these guys, there was a thriving blues bar scene in my part of NE Wisconsin throughout the 90’s, with the cream of the region frequenting the Fox River Valley area, so I heard all kinds of killer shuffle stylings out of Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison & the Twins... Of course you must play according to whom you’ve playing with and what their bag is, but whenever I get the chance to play a FATTENED UP medium shuffle especially, guess who l’m thinking about? Plus when I play straight up 1st Gen R&R grooves, I ride at least as much on SD as HH, thinking of “House Is Rockin’”, “Love Struck Baby”, etc.....Whipper Layton will always have a place inside of my brain, not far from the likes of Earl Palmer & Levon Helm as part of the Supreme Taste-Monger Wing of the Halls of the Grand Inspirators...

Thanks Chris Layton. You gave this drummer a whole new world when I bought SRV & DT records all those years ago. They're still in the regular player pile next to the stereo and your playing is as unique and difficult to replicate as it was back then.

Saw SRV in a club in Houston. they backed up some Texas regular i forget who he was, SRV was not even on the bill. It was a small club in the Galleria are called something like Spring feilds, we were there to see the headliner band and after SRV played we left , we were blown away, I do not remember the year, I want to say 77-78, I remember it was the 4th of July weekend because we went to addicts dam and shot fireworks after he played.

Yeah, I remember that. I can't think of the name either but is was a club in a shopping mall. I saw The Fabulous Thunderbirds all the time back in those days too.

@@KB-ke3fi If it's in the Galleria then it had to be the club on Richmond in that shopping center near the frwy. The same club I saw Three Dog Nights and a bunch of other bands. They use to have live bands during day out in the parking lot too.

I’m definitely no drummer, but I’ve noticed that Chris’ drum patterns would have a lot of emphasis on the ride cymbal and snare as apposed to the hi-hat and snare and it gives it such a unique flavour. I’ve worked with a lot of drummers over the years, however I usually on see them use the latter technique. Stevie really couldn’t have asked for a more fitting band

I grew up on your music and, like my dad became a drummer and played along with your shuffles and really learned about your feel and various spacing between the notes. Tell me, to me is the greatest Texas shuffle I ever heard. Thanks for the music.

Yes! I get it now! I’m 54 and have been beatin my cans to this shuffle for so long and could never really “get” that TX shuffle… until NOW! To see CL do it as a person to person is epic! You guys rock! And BTW, I’m wondering what other secrets do you have! Ha ha

my grandfather, Doyle Brink of the Texas Swingsters, of Waco Texas, taught me the double down beat Texas shuffle back in the 60's. It's a lot different than anything else out there, but always somehow fits. In all the rock bands I played in for 50 years, it was just automatic for me on my Slingerland 4 piece he gave me for a birthday present for my 10 birthday, completely rebuilt and restored from the early 50's here in Houston.

There was a reason why they weren’t SRV BAND but Double Trouble. They were their own backing ensemble that couldn’t be beat. Chris, Tommy and Reese were insane.

I am trying to do a cover of Tightrope and could never figure out exactly what you are doing rhythm wise, I used to cover that tune about 20 years ago and thought back then I used to play it better, more closely to what you did but now is not the same..nothing is anymore for sure..oh well I will do my best to stay close to the original recording, always do!

A relaxed, laid back in the pocket well executed shuffle of any type is a beauty to behold with the ears. Can elevate a song to an entirely new level. Very few are better at it than Whipper. Maybe nobody.

I always felt Stevie and Double Trouble were victims of the 80's with the gated drums and heavy vocal reverb. They were an improv live band, and should've been recorded as such. But, that's just me. I always loved their live records instead of their albums.

The shuffle rhythm's a lost art. So many drummers these days are hung up on the metal bullshit double bass drum rubbish, but they can't play a simple blues shuffle.

Can attest to this. At a gig I played, another rock drummer(who I knew) sat in for me for a song and this guy couldn't shuffle to save his life.

Let me correct you there. The shuffle is by no means a 'lost art', since thousands of blues, jazz and gospel drummers have been doing it; 'metal bullshit double bass drums' is by no means rubbish, but a creative and stylistic choice that fits the genre...and guess what, they may not play shuffle much, because they don't have to; as well as many drummers who play blues can't do a proper blast beat, and they don't need to. Doesn't mean one is better or worse than the other, it's different requirements and different choices. Bottom line is, don't devalue people's choices for your smugness.

Chris since you have done it please consider picking up this family man with extreme talent on the strat. Zack Rosicka video While We Cry, this guy has talent to spare and a couple young kids and a great all around guy. Saw him play at the Lake Austin Blues Festival prior to Kenny Wayne and Joe B. and he was right there with Bonamassa and might I say better than KWS.
