Well ... this weekend ... well the long story is that I recovered about 30 songs from my old hard disk unit because I didn't want to loose them. One of them is good enough to re-record so I've tracked vocals and instruments ... because ... the drummer I'm working with will do a great job on it. It's a ballad and will lend itself to pretty drumming and 70 style cymbal and tom bashing. Meh.

This weekend, I started mixing one of my own songs. I still find it's a difficult undertaking to mix on my own stuff, but there's no use in whining, I have to master it one day 🙂

I loved everything about this walk through. Chris is very entertaining, I enjoyed his friendly personality, gear comments and stories...the same goes for you too Warren. Chris's studio is so organic, organized but also quirky, like an old chef's kitchen...a little bit of this and a little bit of that makes it so tasty. I like how you edited in HD camera shots for we gearheads to zone into.

The daw control will work since USB is class compliant and talks to DAW direct (MIDI or control messages). No driver updates needed.

Great studio tour. Chris' microphone collection is bananas. Speaking of mics, whatever mics you guys are using to record this tour sounds incredible. The minute you walked into the studio from the lobby and closed the door, you can hear the quietness of the room. The same for Scotty's studio room, and the control room. Awesome!

I do the same exact thing with the D6/sub info with a mic pre like the Neve with the low bump channel(forget is it blue or red, can never remember), or a similar pre(there's a few now). HATE IT inside the kick! Outside it's a gem though if you don't have a subkick, or need some extra that a sub doesn't have. But what's really great is an 18" Bass cab wired backwards acting like a sub mic! An SWR Big Ben sounds wicked with that way. You can try it with any speaker or cab, just switch the wires around!

Great video, cool studio. Let Chris Sorem know that the yamaha mixers usb drivers may stop being made... but if he hooks up everything old school midi (in & out through a standard midi interface) he should be able to get most all the features he did with usb with using controller commands. Between the highly programable DM mixer and Cubase 12 ability to map everything it wont be a problem. I did this with my old dm2000 when it lost it drivers and my radical sac2.2.

Current Yamaha offerings may be the CL series or the Nuage which is their big studio control surface and talks to Cubase and neuendo as well as their converters although I imagine you could use any. I have a dm2000 with Cubase on windows

is there enough headroom to take advantage of natural room tone/reverb for drums for example? it seems over-dampened to me? wouldn't it better to just isolate and do them dry? please advise, thanks

Are you talking about Chris' live room? It's super live and can be dampened down if necessary

6:18 Can you damage a guitar amp if you are using it for bass?

Only if you were to only put low end in VERY loud! However, that would be difficult, we use guitar amps for the overdrive sound mixed in with low end from a bass amp or DI

WHOA...did you say a guy named Sam Gendel, "brought his own mic to a session" recently🤔. Now i could be going out on a limb here; because what are the odds of this being the same Sam Gendel i went to Redwood High School in Visalia, California (class 05).i wanna say this cat was a pretty talented sax player if my memory serves me correct and Chris Sorem did mention recording a horn section. Hhhmmm now if the owner Chris sees this message is Sam a thin red head dude about mid 30's?" this could be some small world type ish if so haha....🧐🤷♂🤫🤔

Nice Studio, love this as it's not the 'traditional' way to do things but still produces great music there's a lesson there somewhere. : ) Don't know if you'll see this Warren but please consider doing a Video about what would be the best gear to get first when setting up a home Studio, not a nice one like yours :) But a more real home Studio....;) (You know what I mean) I was using SW effects etc but want to go down the Hardware route but can't afford all those lovely rack units, so....you know a real more affordable list of what too get first, Compressor or Preamps or....Then what is best to get next on the list, hopefully you'll get what I'm trying to say. Cheers for the Video's learning a lot, slowly anyway, at 62, things move slower. Lol. :)

@@Producelikeapro Thanks for the reply Warren, I appreciate it as you must be mad busy....Sometimes it looks like there's someone off Camera gesturing you to hurry up lol - I've been watching the Home Studio Vids with great interest...As an example of what I really mean is, I use a 2008 DP Mac Pro using LPX into a Digidesign 003 Rack only with the BeyerDynamic DT-100's. So I have the basics but what would be the next logical piece of HW to relieve the aging MP for effects processing duties or is there an order of preference/importance what HW to add next, ie: Compressor or Seperate Mic Preamps etc....It might sound like going backwards for your channel but something along the lines of 'Back To Basics' (For those who Produce music in the corner of the Dining Room)😉
