For me the Song speaks of two different women. The woman mentioned in the beginning of the song "who knows (believes) that All That Glitters is Gold" symbolizes the materialist path and the woman at the end of the song "who shines white light and wants to show that everything still turns to gold" is the spiritual path and the song is saying there's still time to change the road you're on.

indeed she can show you the way to be a 'rock' and not to 'roll'. ie live your life with solid foundations of truth and harmony with the earth and you will be rewarded as opposed to buying artificial enlightenment, (weed and others), and trying to 'roll' your way into heaven and blowing 'rings of smoke' only to have your path wisped away on the whispering wind.

I first heard this song at age 14 when it came out. I understood the Stairway to Heaven to be drugs, probably LSD or shrooms. All my friends thought the same thing. "Your head is hummin and it won't go..." This song came out when Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books became very popular with teenage readers, and the strings/recorders(whistle/flute sounds), and lyrics fed into the fantasy vibe.

I like your reaction to one of my all time favourite songs of all time. I have a little story to share about Stairway to heaven, My Grandfather had put me through Royal conservatory classical piano as a child, I did fairly well but learned more contemporary music as I aged the one I can still play from heart is Stairway to heaven, although it doesn’t sound as rocked out as Led Zeppelin’s masterpiece it is still quite lengthy and has all the varying parts and tempos. My Grandfather had sadly been fighting various cancers and had not been given long to live he had decided to die at his home which he had built surrounded by his family instead of in the hospital hooked up to machines and alone, on the day I went to see him he was resting in the room with the piano I had played on since a child so I played him the only song I could remember by heart which happened to be Stairway to heaven, I was blessed to be able to remember and play for the Man who had allowed me that opportunity and every time I hear that song now it means something so much different to me,truly bought that stairway to heaven and it was worth all the gold.

Everybody thinks their generations music is the best. I love this song and many others from this era, but there are bands every bit and more talented now. Man it warms my heart to see young people looking back at the talent that was the 50's, 60's, and 70's. From Mo Town to Rock and Roll there is a whole World to discover. In those days all those rock groups didn't just sing, they wrote the songs, wrote the music, played the instruments, mixed the recordings, and even drove the damn bus to the shows. There was no bull shit "auto-tune" like today. Those people had talent, and they were deep into their style and had intellect. The songs tell amazing stories, and have deeper hidden meaning than any of the stuff today. Awesome response to this stuff you guys... LOVE IT!

I loved watching your reactions while knowing what was still to come. As for the meaning of the lyrics, like everything musical, the meaning is whatever you get from it. There are no wrong answers. Same here. I am about your same age. I actually never liked that song all that much at the time. Thought it was overproduced and a rip-off from Taurus (by Spirit). Zep was well-known to rip things off from people and not give them credit. But, as I was listening to this song, I felt the same way you did, e.g. knowing that drum break was coming, and knowing THEY didn't know that. It's a pretty dramatic break, for sure. I'd like to see them react to something by Cream, say Crossroads, or maybe even Toad, or a live version of Sunshine of Your Love. We had some outstanding music in our day for sure.

@@jazzyboy7784 I don't see why it couldn't be interpreted that way too ("sometimes words have two meanings"), especially when you hear the "rings of smoke" part, which might sound like someone smoking something, but it turns out that rings of smoke over forests is an occult symbol that means that witchcraft is being practiced or something similar to that (at least so I read), like the one you see on the album cover, which would give a hint about the background and the intention behind at least that album. It is common for artists to make dual-meaning songs, so I assume the drug interpretation could be the exoteric one, and the one about the "secret" society (it's never been a secret that it exists) looking to be "like gods" (the alchemical allegory of turning something into gold) the esoteric one, because they were big fans of Aleister Crowley, and this song is filled with symbolism that reflects his beliefs.
