ive been in barber school for 8 month and did not learn anything from the teachers. All i’ve learned has been by videos on youtube or other students who have the experience cutting hair. So if you really wanna learn. Don’t wait for the teacher to do something, get up and seek for yourself. 💪

I was licensed as a cosmetologist back in 2013. I worked in a salon for about 2 months and then I quit, because I didn't think I was good enough. I am my biggest critic and didn't realize at the the time, that coming out of school you're not gonna be perfect at all. I got discouraged and threw my dream away but I would still cut my family's hair. Last year I tore my tendons in my left wrist from working like a Man, 4 years in a factory. I lost about 20% of my wrist function and I took it as a wake up call. Towards the end I felt miserable there and I took the plunge to leave. About a month ago I enrolled myself in a 100 hr barber crossover program. I always leaned towards men's cuts in beauty school and also wanted to become a barber. Aside from school, I've also enrolled myself in the tomb45 Foundations course. I've been getting ppl to book shave services with me left to right, all while reading the entire Milady book and watching video after video on barbering and hair. I go to school Monday-Friday full time and on the weekends I work at SportsClips and also learn from their system, and apply everything I already know and what I have learned. I l have an almost 2 year old daughter and still manage to make it work. I wasted so much time losing out on my dream, that's why I'm more motivated to doing it right this time. I don't care what I have to, it's all or nothing.

My barber school here in south Louisiana was $8,000 all together. My teacher has been teaching school for 30+ years, he’s 70 something. So he’s very old school he taught us the cutting basics. But most of my classmates we all were on different levels coming in to school but we helped each other out and looked after one another. I came in raw like didn’t know how to cut a lick but after a year I’m confident in cutting hair and I show appreciation for my teacher giving me a career and changing my life and I thank my classmates for helping me throughout the months.

I taught in a barber school & we took pride in making sure that the students learn as much as possible along with financial literacy. We teach how to make 100k over a few years so they can understand their value. We have a lot of students on this path. Chris I appreciate you & salute you

Went to barber school and was only taught by an instructor maybe once ever. The rest of my time in school was. Walk in, set my station up. Sit there all day and wait until someone maybe came in to get a haircut. Splitting cuts between like 12-20 other students would take forever to get someone in your chair. Thank God for Bossio, 360jeezy, getbeamed and many other teachers/mentors that taught me basically everything I know. 2 years later I’m in a great shop elevating and growing everyday!

When I started cutting hair about 14 years ago we didn’t even have a 10th of the resources these new barbers have and still blame their skills on their teacher. Gotta put that time in and learn outside the shop! I used to watch Donato barber tutorials back in the day..

I actually just graduated from Barber school. And I think it’s really want you make of it. If you go in with a mindset of not gonna learn anything. Then you’re not gonna learn anything. I soaked it all in. Some stuff I learned some I didn’t. But it’s really what you want out of the school.

I've been a licensed barber for almost 30 years and I remember when I went to barber school back then the owner/ school didn't teach me anything..I actually just sat in front of a small tube TV with a vcr looking at "my lady" video on cutting long hair..WTF!! so after about a month me nd two other guys took it upon ourselves to go to the senior citizens housing and ask permission from who ever was in charge and start cutting hair..made a ton of mistakes but we learned..when I opened my own shop I stopped hiring people that had experience and hired students that had graduated from school and I would teach them...it was tough for my self as a owner and for the young barber..but if that young barber would listen and pay his/ her dues they would do very well..whether they stayed with me and made good money or opened there own shop or used the barber trade while they went to school and did something else..obviously these young barbers are very talented can do amazing cuts/fades/ designs..I still learn from a young blood barber once in a while...btw I'm a 3rd generation barber so it has changed and come along way..the barbering trade..anyways good video if I can give any advice is keep pushing keep hustling work at a shop and stay. Dont over charge your client but also don't under value your work...treat clients like number one..but don't put up with b.s. carry urself with professionalism and respect because after all the work that you do is being looked at by many many people and that can be a lawyer dr. Military law enforcement blue collar worker...and people see that..take pride in your craft..it will take care of you..did for my gfather..father.bro..and me..god bless bossio...

Am in high school right now and in cosmetology school due to not having a barber school near but its not hard as long you put in the work and willing to learn. I do pedicures, manicures, curl hair, do chemical services. I dont really learn about barbering so i learn thru youtube. Get good at what your not good at i know how to fade but do highlights or do curls am learning to be good at it even tho i might never use it.

I went to barber school and was taught by certified hairstylists. Get into the real world, working under a Master Barber of 30 years. Night. And. Day. BUT having said that, the diploma got me in the door to my Master Teacher who I am so grateful for! Now I'm mastering the clippers finally. Learning to layer and blend with clippers only, instead of scissors. It's wild and what separates us from hairstylists. Master the clippers!

So also a huge reason why I saw people quitting and making it a career is as follows. When I got licensed at 19 I worked 5 days a week in the barbershop plus two days a week in a salon bringing home around 350 a week. It takes time to build, get better, start making real money. And if you have a mortgage, kids, car bills you are going to drop that to get the guaranteed money when you need it. You will make good money if you stick with it but if you can't weather the storm in your rookie years it's hard, always been my thought and have seen as to why people quit.

I started cutting with confidence when I was 13-14 y/o. We used to cut friends hair to one another and challenge each other to do flat-top, fades, lineup with clipper only. Then I learned to cut my own hair and since I have not paid for a haircut. Just because I wanted to learn more I practiced on my own. It was difficult because in the mirror you cut the opposite way, but it has been my greatest challenge and way to learn. For icing on the cake God gave me three boys. I have been their barber; they all have different hair which is great for me to teach myself more. Now, I will do school just to get a license to cut and not worry about the law. If I'm getting in it will be all the way. I'm also military al I cut los of military individuals and they love my work,they always call me back for cuts. Thank you for the information. unfortunately in my state, a license is required, but no inspector ever comes into shops to make sure everyone is licensed or that the place is up to code. very frustrating.

I’m actually a student at Riggins urban barber college in San Diego it’s a really good school they teach you everything from fades, gentlemen cuts, shear work, sanitation and how to get ready for a real shop

It’s what people make of it My program was 1500 hours 10 month program I did it in 7 months with working and got suspended once and came back for more to finish I am a single parent and that was over a decade and then some I only work at military bases When I started cutting hair there was times I wanted to give up. The Barber School I go to is in MO we do 1000 hours and mine has Barbers and Cosmos. I see between 10-20 clients a week in school, roughly an hour block. Books in the morning, clients in the afternoon, I think it works well.

I just graduated from barber school last month from Las Vegas there’s no financial aid here too so we had to pay out of pocket 12k shit is no joke for the average person. I didn’t know how to cut hair for shit didn’t even know how to hold the clippers but I went to a great school the teachers were definitely solid it’s called expertise barber institute the people there taught me a lot so did the teachers it’s what you make it I came out the school 12 months later a better man. I take my state board test may 1st 🔥

I'm 45yrs old I've been cutting since 13yrs old, I went to Barber school but I didn't finish I still cut hair. As a matter of fact I fade my own hair and my grandsons

Bossio, we talked about this when we met at Clash of the Clippers. Totally agree. Barber Exam is only difficult for the students who aren't applying themselves. Mix that with barber colleges that aren't teaching exam preparation and you end up with a 50% pass rate. I've made a lot of videos on the barber exam topic, offer a free guide and an online prep course.

Great I agree with much of the info shared here, i for one went to a great school where I learned a lot however that was back in 06 and the industry has grown. But great point Chris on screening the students and giving a quality education I agree 1000 percent on that one !!

I honestly feel that barbering has become trendy in more recent years. People see the success, clout and notoriety of “celebrity barbers” and want that but when they get a taste of the reality and what it took to get there they quit from not having overnight success

I'm not sure about in the USA but here in the UK a look of students quit because they come in wanting to do nothing but skin fades. Usually they start with scissor cuts such as, uniform layer, squared layers, graduation, washing, blowdrying, styling etc. Usually by this time students get fed up with cutting blocks and scissors and drop out. A lot of them only came for clipper work! Those who do stick it out and pass but dont make it a career for the most part dont have the passion and or the belief in the craft in my opinion. I have a buddy in Chicago that just told me how he hates how he is literally being taught nothing (hes 2 weeks in) and has had no instruction, just told to cut then when he does ask for helpm or something they get all irritated and don't actually help. My school in Ca was the same way

A lot of these schools have teachers who did not make it out in the real world as successful barbers/stylists. Salty instructors who have lost their drive and in return cause students to loose passion….. 10-12 months of being lead by instructors who have salty attitudes causes you not to even want to be in school let alone the industry. If school was filled with successful instructors who were motivated then that would result in motivated student’s who want to learn. So after 10-12 months of loosing passion and not wanting to learn….. the will to continue educating yourself through a mentor or even using KZfaq is gone. Like you said yourself, it’s high school… where are most high school drop outs or even graduates now?

In my experience so far and after going to private schools and community college. For me community college is the way for many reasons. First the level of education does not compare to a private school, financial aid consist of, book grants, fee waivers, pell grants, forgiveable loans, free transportation and more! Considering you qualify mostly based on income. A private school was charging me 10,000 to 20,000 and even though financial aid was available for some schools you still end up owing. At community college their paying me. I qualified for all subsidies for a total of $5,000 for the semester deposited into my bank account in 2 payments. They got me a free buss pass and paid for my books. The schedule varies some classes are late afternoon some early. Like I said the education level is higher because it's a real college. The instructors are actually giving you a lesson hand on and theory.

I'm in school and it's true do don't learn as much as you'd like. But it's still worth it becuz even taking that step to try and learn is worth very much!

I learned nothing in barber school didn’t even know how to hold comb, but 28 yrs later I’m still cutting hair, because I had a shop owner who cared! The main thing is if you want to be good at it you will be if you stay at the shop & don’t leave every time you go an hr or 2 without doing a cut!

I went to barber school and did a barbershop apprenticeship. Did school 2 hours and would go to the barber shop after It was truly a blessing now that Im seeing myself type that WOW. But never dedicated myself to Barbering never went to take my state boards to get my license. And after the covid shutdown been working 9-5 and haven’t gotten back to cutting hair. I guess im scared of failing, but right now in failing at life because im not doing the thing I love 💈 “love what you do, never work a day in your life”

Currently in barber school now in Tampa… from my experience you will not learn how to cut from school it’s all up to you to be hands on and seek outside knowledge. so i'm looking at schools right now. Hearing before hand that i won't learn anything is a bit discouraging to hear. So if I go to a barber school, how do I make sure that I don't develop bad habits? I'f no one is there to really teach me and I'm on my own, how do I make sure that I'm growing the right direction?

Went to cosmetology because in New Jersey at the time no barber schools I knew of I didn’t know how to style layer and many other gifts that keep on giving one thing I do know is whenever it came to mens,kids taper’s Fades frohawks and regular gentleman hair cut, supervisor would call me to cut the school price haircuts learned and aced the quizzes I’ve learned more about being in a real life business I had no plans on being a hairdresser and I got mixed up in something illegal and the 14 years I’ve Learned plenty and became a prisoner Barber and every type of hair I mastered so now I’m going to barber school in September 6,000$ dollar school for my master barber license. I’m looking into paperwork for the board and I’m involved with the community children are free is how it starts right here in my complex and since I’m going to have paperwork from the community ,shelters and I’m not loosing I’m gaining especially where I came from and the board needs to see and hear proof that will Allow them to bless me with my license with a letter from the courts I’m in good standing for reason I can be trusted around clients and buisnesses being I have a felony I’m very humbled and modist I draw portraits 3D real life on the back of head and my latest work was bugs bunny slamming a basketball and the glass breaking.this is my passion and I’m going to learn from you and I’m a strong believer that with show and tell I’m going to be that 150.00$ haircut guy and we all should be. I’m trying to learn the business part of our industry and I’ve been in beast mode every day and maniquin work is essential to learning how to understand what you’re doing with scissor over finger and comb and clipper over comb and 😅 you can use the same maniquin for many techniques and also Prepares you for your confidence to get the client the style and cut he or she wants. I can perform any haircut for any client that sits in my chair and after that counsaltation and scalp check my hands naturally knows what tools to pickup and my clients are extremely happy with the mirror and the professionalism and time of their service. I’m trying to say that Maniquins should be done all the time and are great teachers ❤

I choose paying 20 grand instead of 6 in the city in Chicago because i had no idea on cutting hair and i knew they weren't going to teach that well in the city .

School starts in September for me and I would have to pay off a 13k loan and im afraid how long that might take me to pay , any advice ?

Bro I agree with you 💯 I went to school and was fortunate enough to have an AMAZING group of instructors. However I had the opportunity to work in a shop after a couple months and was faced with the dilemma of go to school and pay money I didn't have, or work and make money I needed. I had to work but played myself and never got licensed. Then after 3 years of being in that shop I moved almost 2 hours away and by the grace of God I found a great guy who's a master barber and was opening a shop. Since I was capable of putting out decent haircuts and have such a profound passion for learning and cutting, he was more than willing to apprentice me. I am now about 3 months away from being able to test and I have plans to become an instructor and open a school with my mentor. We are definitely going to implement all of the skills involved with being a successful barber into the curriculum. I pray that it all comes to fruition and that I have the opportunity to produce educated barbers who can make it in the industry. I know barely anyone will read this, but to give credit where it's due: S/o to Johnny otano, doe gold, Katie , Johnny B, and all the tomb 45 squad, especially bossio and Christian Perez ... and many more.

I was a barber school instructor for a couple of years. I was popular with the students because they knew that I had their interest at heart. The state requires x numbers of hours for perms, x number of hours for color etc. They used barber students as haircutters only. I don't want someone to do a haircut, but have to send them down the street for color.

Before I dive in, much respect to you and Barbers alike that showcase and encourage growth within the barber industry. Nearing 30 years of active duty service and cutting hair since I was 13, I’m currently enrolled in barber school to get licensed as part of retirement and financial supplemental sustainment. I agree with what you’re saying in this video. There is little to no true curriculum in these schools and also no quality assurance to enforce and ensure students are actually getting the training they pay for. My advice for students is to cut as much hair as you can, watch KZfaq tutorials and give yourself credit for every cut you do (good or bad). My plan is to open a barber school with a dedicated curriculum that focuses actual cutting as much as text book but to also mentor through the process in respect to attain retention.

Also as an apprentice I work with all the shops barbers. I pick all their brains. That’s what it’s all about man.

My school is $20k and literally sets us up to fail. If we’re late they give us ISS and make us roll red rod perms all day. Essentially wasting our entire day on one or two perms. And say I need 80 more haircuts to graduate, if I’m faster at something that makes them more money they’ll only book me for that service instead of what I need. 😒

I’ve had instructors say it’s not their job to teach you how to cut hair. It’s their job to teach you how to be sanitary and pass state board.

the barber school I went too was in ct. definitely didn't learn anything about barbering but I learned more about straighten hair color rollers layers etc. not much about fades tapers etc. I didn't mind learning about the stylist part of it ,but lucky for me I was able to learn watching my barber as a teen ..

I actually would go get my haircut at Wiggins urban barber school in San Diego crazy enough he sold me my first barber clippers and trimmers the owner there is very involved and always helpful giving his students tips and helps his students with cut as they go very dope person was gonna start barber school there but ended up joining the Airforce now I’m definitely wishing I could be back there and go to school with Urban definitely recommend

Facts! Barber School is only worth getting licensed.

They set expectations on themselves on what they should be making or doing by a certain amount of time and at the end of the day they just don't put in the work and/or those expectations were too high. I am sure I will do it but comparing myself to the person in the chair next to me thinking I need to be there in the same timeframe or right then. My pseudo-mentor warned me of this.

I just started barber school because sports clips said I was to slow I didn't cut hair in 20 min I can take my time with my cut after getting my licence plus I'm a cosmologist of over 20 years.

When i was in barberschool, i was in a class of 8. first of all, i was the only one to attend all classes. let alone i had a model every lesson they asked me too. when comparing myself to the other students, they skipped out on lessons because they didn't have a model to work with. the less models you bring to class, the more frustrating it is and eventually you'll quitt, because you don't find anyone to let them cut their hair. You don't feel trusted by i guess. i'm the only one from my class who still cuts to this day.

during quarantine I bought everything to become a barber I was 16 looking for a way to make money and I thought i’d pick up being a barber in my garage. from experience I thought it would be easy, aslong as i followed the videos i’d do a good fade. I was wrong i kept messing up and when i’d ask friends to practice they wouldn’t let me because they wanted to look good. only 3 people would let me cut there hair and practice which was my younger brother, my cousin and his friend. I was cutting 3 heads maybe once or twice a month and over time as I was getting better with every cut I did, it was to slow for me so I gave up. Now i watched martyblendz video on a $100 budget kit and i’m going to try it again. I have two friends who get cut pretty often and are willing to let me practice my fading on them, my little brother will let me and my cousin and his friend will let me to and now i’ll cut about 5 heads. all I ever need is someone to just stick with me through the struggles and I’d reward them in return. Hopefully they stick with me and just let me learn on them so I can make barbering a side hustle while I go to college.
