Do fuel system cleaners actually work? Testing Gumout "All-in-One"

This is the first test in a series of fuel cleaner test I will be performing to see how fuel cleaners work and if they actually work. In this video I tested Gumout "All in one" fuel system cleaner. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment.
I followed the instructions on the container and Gumout fuel cleaner did a great job cleaning the shiny, sludge buildup, but did not work as well as I would have thought on the clumps of hard carbon buildup. It did not clean the cylinders as much as I thought it would since they do say one bottle will clean the engine.
Here is the fuel cleaner I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004...

I'm not a car guy but my takeaway from the fuel additive tests is that it's a slow process. You won't see huge immediate improvement. But if used at each fillup over the course of a vehicle's lifetime compared to one where it wasn't used, you'd see definitive results. You won't clear a mountain of carbon overnight. But you can over time. Or even prevent it from forming in the first place. I'm convinced enough from your videos to start using the stuff. Great videos all around. Thanks, I've learned a LOT.

i think the point of the additive is to remove the soft carbon before it hardens so it needs to be used regurlarly from day 1 not after it accumulates and hardens over 120k miles
@robertmaybeth3434
@robertmaybeth3434 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try that because not only isn't it necessary, it's not practical. Drive the car normally, get the engine warmed up at least once a week, use this additive every month or two if you want to, and don't worry about the carbon. The reason you can really forget about it is, a healthy engine will burn away excess carbon with no attention from the owner needed. The amount of carbon buildup is self limiting, burns away as you drive, and if it increases it means you have a different problem (such as faulty injector, clogged air filter, fouled spark plugs, etc.) that needs attention. Fix the problem and the excess carbon will burn away on its own.
@Ghryst
@Ghryst 4 жыл бұрын
@@robertmaybeth3434 "a healthy engine will burn away excess carbon" incorrect, a healthy driving style, with plenty of mid-range revs, will keep carbon from building up. ppl who drive around "chugging the engine", (doing 1000-2000 rpms under load) are ppl who get carbon buildup. cars are designed to run under load (accelerating/hill climbing/towing, etc) in the middle of the rpm gauge (2000-4000 rpms), not a the extreme low/high ends. SpecialBonusProTip: carbon does not "burn up", it is the end result of things "burning up"..
@robertmaybeth3434
@robertmaybeth3434 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ghryst the point is, if you have so much carbon an additive will actually improve your engine, you're doing something wrong. I too use these additives, hoping fingers crossed they help long term. But if your engine is having performance problems and sluggish running from carbon, as in old timey engines? You might need something else in your engine.

Okay my main criticism was the video was way too verbose. for example, Reading the instructions all the little detailed information about which cylinder you were going into when you could've just cut it short and said here's the before and after this is what I did I don't like The juice. I do however appreciate the fact that the sentences are fluid and punctuated properly. I would add a little bit more inflection so it doesn't sound like you were reading from a script. Your videos are definitely better than most but you have to figure anyone watching a video on fuel system cleaners is going to know all of those little facts and details already. I also appreciate the fact that you drive a Mazda like myself! I have a question for you the last time I got my oil changed they said I need to get my transmission fluid flushed and it would cost $99. My car is a 2006 Mazda six with the 3 L V6. It has an automatic transmission and approximately 65,000 miles on it. Now I've always heard that you don't change the transmission fluid, is that correct? Any info is greatly appreciated thanks Jonathan

MrTrustafox I agree and disagree. I did say at the end during my discussion of the results that this test was for carbon deposits because that is what I can physically test for and it is also an important part for cleaning engines. The gumout bottle showed before and after pictures of the valves and cylinder heads with carbon deposits before and none after so this test is valid for testing their claims. At the same time, this product might clean injectors and probably prevents corrosion but that wasnt what I was testing. I would not consider that this product "may be" a better product than I show because their claims on the bottle. If they claimed that this was just an injector cleaner, then sure, I would agree, but they say this is a carbon deposit cleaner too (for piston heads). See where I am coming from?

I believe the take away here is if you use the product earlier in the engine's life, and use it regularly, you can prevent buildup to some degree before it gets too thick. For your truck over 100k miles you probably need to manually clean the stuck on stuff. Then once cleaned, proceed to use the liquid product to keep the accumulation at bay.

My personal favorite is Berryman b12 chemtool. It's inexpensive and very strong. Be sure not to get it on paint, as it will take some paint off. I remember seeing a test online that it was one of the most effective fuel system solvents in an independent test that did not harm the nylon sock on the fuel pump. When I removed my intake manifold after running a tank with B12 the intake runners were spotless.

You gotta test every single one of those “mechanic in a bottle” and see if any of those does what it says.... We’ve seen misrepresentation on labeling in our packaged food industries, but never have I seen one done on the automotive industry. A lot of those claims on their bottles seem almost too good to be true.... but I don’t have the time or $$ to try it myself. And plus, I am not half as knowledgeable as you are with this kind of stuff. I think for any of those cleaners to really work you have to go directly into the gas line before the fuel injectors! I have studied this on different KZfaq videos and I found out that all these years I've been adding that stuff to my tank and I don't do it religiously and I buy the cheapest s*** I can get well guess what I think I really screwed up it didn't help me at all! The reason for that is I have found out when I put that cheap stuff in my gas tank all it does is clean deposits on its way to the engine and it can actually plug my fuel injectors up worse because it doesn't break the particles down in a small enough piece it sends clumps out and I have noticed that my little 2005 Pontiac vibe runs like s*** for about 4 days after I put that into tank it idles little rough and I think it's because I sent s*** down to the fuel injectors but it always straightens out in a few days? Just wanted to share my experience I am going to try to clean my fuel injectors myself with that video they have on KZfaq!!

I think the idea would be to use this and other products like this over the life of the engine starting from the beginning so it never builds up in large amounts. I've been using Lucas oil products like this on my 04 GTO for the life of the car and it still runs like a champ today in 2018 with over 150k on it.

Hold up. You'll never clean the whole piston. The gum out claims valves and combustion chamber meaning the head. You can't see you head with the bore scope. For your best test you'll have to pull the head before using it then pull it after using the gum out.

@raredanceclassics
@raredanceclassics 4 жыл бұрын
Seafoam, though you don't spray it in there. You can add some to the fuel tank but the best way to get fast results is to suck it through a vacuum line while the car runs, I think you use about a third of a can then kill the engine for a little while. It'll struggle really badly to start up but once it does you'll see a ton of white smoke pour out the exhaust. I've seen a lot of videos that showed before and afters, that stuff really is a solid product for some of the really caked on crap.

Awesome video, I think the product is meant to be used regularly. I would be afraid of a product that's too strong and removes all the carbon at once, that cannot be good. Also, I think it's mostly used for injectors and preventing heavy carbon buildup but once it's there it's too hard to come off What do you guys think?
@jbone665
@jbone665 10 ай бұрын
I think knocking all that baked on deposits would be unrealistic and likely dangerous for an engine. It got the sludge and may chip bits and pieces away of the hardened but I would expect it to be a longer process. The cleaner itself is likely a lighter duty cleaner just so it doesn't damage other parts. Think of it like bleach. Pure bleach may work in some tasks but can ruin other stuff and a diluted mix may be safer but less effective option. I don't think 1 bottle will be a be all solution but like my high millage car a bottle 1 a month may help reduce some damage but it isn't going to work miracles.

doesn't that black shiny carbon turn into the big carbon crystals over time? the instructions appear to indicate that it will KEEP the engine clean when it's used every oil change which would make sense if it removed the soft carbon sludge every time before it has a chance to crystallize onto the cylinder

Be interesting to try it on a bad injector. I don't really worry that much about carbon deposits, on a FI engine it's not the issue it used to be, but a dirty injector can really screw with your mileage and performance. You'd have to find a bad injector that was visibly bad if you pull it out of the engine and film the spray pattern, then run this through and see if that gets better.

Keeping your engine clean (as Gumout claims) is far easier than cleaning it once corroded. Second, Gumout claims that it's product is a (Treatment) meaning it is designed as a periodic and on-going process - similar to going to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned once or twice a year. Gumouts declarations are accurate, they never used the word (restore), so don't think a one tank treatment will instantly dissolve most or all deposits. If it did, it would eat your gaskets and pit the metal parts.

Hi Chris, i was told a trick by a rep of FORTE, in this situation, fill the car 1/4 to 1/2 a tank. Drive the car for 20-30 mins in 3rd - 4th gear, revs at 3-4 or 5000, getting the engine very hot. That lot would move, very logical.

I was thinking the bottle is probably overhyping the before and after making you think a single bottle does this. I think it's probably over the course of a few or more oil changes the carbon deposits will eventually be minimized. Something that hard and that caked on probably needs time to be fully removed. Plus would you really want all of that carbon deposit coming off in a single tank of gas and dirtying up your system all at once?

I appreciate your honesty. You did get a positive result. It was next to absolute nothing but it did do something. Bottom line i would say is that this particular product is garbage sadly. I have used other products and i find that they need to be to be used in higher concentration and with far less gas and used more often. Which is not very convenient or affordable. Your videos are good quality for the most part. Keep up the good work. Id like to see you do more.

Hey, Chris. I've been using PB Blaster to remove carbon buildup on pistons. First you need a warm engine. Put your gloves on and remove the spark plugs. Then use the straw on the can inside of a drinking straw with a long tape tab on the top to prevent you losing it inside the cylinder. Then you spray each cylinder for about 5 to 8 seconds. Wait 30 to 45 minutes. Then you crank it after a few times, and let it run for 30 minutes. You should see white smoke out of your exhaust pipe. Try this. And use your boroscope to check the results.

Chris, the best would be test engine power on dyno before and after. I think dirty piston is not so important. But if this liquid can clean fuel injectors... I use similar products for diesel, here in Poland. After application I see significant engine noise reduction, engine idle is more smooth, small reduction of fuel consumption , less fumes from exhaust.
