Back in my motorcycle riding days, I bought a new helmet that came with an anti-fog cloth. When the cloth wore out, I asked the cycle shop were to get another one and was told it was just dish soap 🧼 on the cloth. The reason the screen fogs up is the surface tension of the water droplets. The detergent reduces the surface tension and the droplets spread out in a continuous sheet of moisture and becomes invisible. I tried it and it has worked well for me the past 40 years. When my mother-in-law was having her window fogging problem, I told her he same thing and she had as good results as I had. Not everyone has spray shaving cream but everyone has dish soap.

Thanks Chris. I know this is a few years old but just wanted to say that this is now of particular usefulness to EV drivers. In general, the less you use climate control and/or heating in winter the greater range you have. I pre-heat my Kona so it's nice and toasty in the morning, and combined with heated seats and steering wheel I would never have to use heating or AC when driving if not for short blasts to clear the windscreen and side windows. Hopefully this will eliminate the need for that too.

A simpler fix is to make sure your car's ventilation controls are set to bring fresh air into the car. In other words, turn OFF the recirc control. As the humid air comes through the system, it will be heated by your car's heating system, thereby dropping the relative humidity in it and eliminating fogged windows. It helps if the defrost setting is used to direct the warm air onto the glass. ALSO, if the windows do get fogged, TURN ON your AC. That also serves to drop the relative humidity in the air. Read your owner's manual and it will point this out to you. No special window treatments are needed!

Another great helper to combat foggy windows or just moisture in your vehicle in general, is to buy some of those compact Silica Moisture Absorber containers, like you would use in a storage unit, outdoor shed, RV or closets in your home to keep everything dry. I buy 4 of them from the Dollar Tree and they last all year long and I never have a problem with excessive moisture in my ride or foggy windows. I put 2 in my car at a time, where no one can see them and then switch them out when needed. The water binding beads are on top and there is a collection chamber below, when it fills up with water, you simply just replace it!... Hope this helps someone else, it works great for me during winter and the rainy season! 👍🏻

The first way to avoid fogging is to actually clean and decontaminate (from stuck in dirt & grime) the glass. Having dirt particles, or the off gassing residue from all the interior components, on the glass will make it fog waaaaay quicker. The moisture has something to cling to, so fog forms faster.

If you keep a pack of sanitary towels in your glovebox, they come in handy for those times when you get in to your car and every window is steamed up and the condensation just won't shift. Also, packs of silica gel like you get in new shoes, keep a few sachets of those scattered in your car in the glove box, ashtrays etc and they help keep the moisture at bay.

The reason windshields fog up is the difference in temperatures between the inside and outside of the car. The solution is to equalize the temperature.If it's cooler outside turn on your A/C and set the temperature somewhere in the middle...a little cool but not too cool, set it to the dehumidifier setting to blow the air towards the windshield and windows. Works for me instantly.

Bottom line keep your windows super clean and the moisture will not fog as much. I drive for a living and I have noticed that's the key, just clean and the moisture can't stick to the glass as easily. It's amazing how much fine dust and oils can build a thin layer causing the moisture to cling to the glass in just a short period of time.

FYI to Chris and everyone. Warm air always tries to get to cooler air. The surface the warmer air hugs is the side it condenses on. Warm air outside with cold air inside, water condenses on the outside of the glass. That's why it's best to even out the temps on both sides to reduce extremes. Also using an AC doesn't technically dehumidify, it just lowers the dew point or the total volume of water it can hold. That's why very hot air touching very icy glass causes condensation, the hot air touching the cold can no longer hold the water and loses it on the surface
@adrianthoroughgood1191
@adrianthoroughgood1191 Жыл бұрын
I've never seen fogged windows when using ac so I was wondering about this. I thought it would have to be on the outside as you said, but then you don't have the humidity of your breath which is the cause when it's cold and the inside fogs up. I suppose this would only happen in extremely humid climates like Florida. The moisture condenses on the coldest place so when using ac the moisture condenses in the ac unit.
@TB-up4xi
@TB-up4xi Жыл бұрын
Not convinced on the Air-Con not de-humidifying. When I turn on the aircon in the car it defogs the windows, whether it is aimed at the screen or not, whether it is set to a temperature higher (heat) or lower (cool) than the outside temp it doesn't matter - it always defogs - that is inconsistent with just lowering the dew-point. This phenomenon should only happen if the moisture content of the inside air is reduced. It doesn't defog nearly as quickly using heater only or just blowing the cold air in from the outside.
@keineahnung8389
@keineahnung8389 8 ай бұрын
As far as I know, the air loses water in the ac when it cools down since colder air can’t hold as much water. Therefore, the air which is cooled down by the windshield doesn’t exceed the amount of water it can store at a given temperature and the water stays in the air.
@Wishwader

Try overlaying the glass with wood. Will stop the moisture getting to the glass. Even better, while not fogged up, take a photo out of each window. Print them out, glue them onto the wood. Because wood alone would look silly. If the photos fog up, add a second layer of wood.

Used to ride a motorcycle in winter. I would ride in temps down to 20F (-5C). Had major problems with visor fogging. Started using a pinlock insert and that helped down to about 40F (5C). Dawn dish soap took care of all fogging down to the lowest temp I could ride and then my breath would freeze to the visor. Just smear some dawn over surface until clear. Don't wipe away. The thicker the layer, the longer it lasts.

Many years ago, a new cleaning person got my glass shower doors cleaner than I had ever seen them. When I asked how, she shared that she cleaned them with Avon Skin So Soft, and promised that now they would also stay clean all week and wouldn’t start filming up from soapy water like always. Sure enough, I easily had crystal clear, clean glass shower doors the rest of the years I lived there. When I started car camping after that, my windows would fog up just from sleeping in the car. Figuring it couldn’t hurt, I rubbed SSS on one, and it was the only one crystal clear in the morning. So now, I just rub SSS on whenever they start to fog up a little and they’re good to go for a few more months. I drive much less than people usually do, though, so I can’t predict how long it works on average.

Basically the best thing that works is making your window hydrophobic, (which is what rainx does) shaving cream is also partly hydrophobic, which is why it works so well. You can buy hydrophobic sprays (mostly for clothing), which work way better then both shaving cream and rain x. It's also the same as what wax does on the outside of the car when you apply. It creates a barrier for water to repel. I have special windscreen wipers that apply that constantly and god does it make driving good.

Hint: sunlight breaks down most chemicals. Also, shaving foam contains potassium hydroxide; I wonder what that might do to door rubber seals over time... (No I dont work for Rain X, but nor do I use dish washing detergent for washing car bodywork, coz, urm, I like it to continue to protect my car AND look good). Lets fight the disease, not the symptoms. Before doing this check and clean all the ventilation holes in your car. Car ventilation system is designed to move air from the front to rear, then exhaust it from rear holes in car body, exhaust holes are under rear bumper, so almost nobody checks and cleans them, also check air filters and replace it if needed, do it regularly, for example once a year or with every oil change. Some cars have two air filters - one inside and one outside the car, usually in area above windscreen, under plastic cover. Also A/C not only cools incoming air, it dries it, so it helps to get rid of moisture so use it.

Switch your heater to demist setting and to pull in air from outside. Then crack open your windows at the front by about a 1\4". Once the engine warms up, the hot air flowing over your windshield will pick up the moisture and carry it out of the car through the thin gaps above the windows. Because the windows are only open a 1\4" the car will still heat up. Also, so many of my friends have complained that their windows always fog up but when questioned, never realised that they have left the heater set to recycle the air in the cabin. So more and more of their breath ends up trapped in the cabin and all the windows fog up.

reply to: Clachan a Choin Sixteen hours of hugging my toilet, convinced me to stop adding RainX to my mixed drinks. My wife claims my eyes have been noticeably foggier since then.

There are some people in Russia who drink windshield washer fluid just because vodka is too expensive. Do not try this at home.

@Arnis Tarassu. Yes! You can shave with rain X. I use it all the time. I usually have my girlfriend come over and shave my p#!$@&:! for me and when she is done the water just runs off in a sec. The only bad thing about shaving with rain X is that I guess it leaves a bad taste in your 👄. Other then that! hey! I recommend it. Give it a try and get back to me, I know you be thankful.😂😂😂😂

Basically, if you have a clear substance on your windows that has hydrophobic regions, the water vapor (H2O) will not make 'hydrogen bonds' and therefore will not fog up the windows. Also the reason why the hand sanitizer (with an alcohol substance, hydroxyl -OH group) fogged up - because the water in the steam made hydrogen bonds with the alcohol. Science.

I got the anti-fog stuff, I use it in my car and on my bathroom mirror. The shaving cream trick looks good at first, but only lasts for a day or two; the RainX stuff lasts a lot longer.

Thanks for the information. I already have the shaving cream, no extra conditioners, etc. Even if it only lasts a day or two, it will be better than the way my windows have fogged up, using just glass cleaner.

The RainX did not last more than 1 use for me. Matter of fact, after it worked to get me driving on the road, I think it actually attracted steam on the inside. I will use the toothpaste or shaving cream.

Thank you, this video was very helpful. I live in a rainy winter climate and my car does a terrible job of defogging the windows, especially the side windows that get more and more fogged up especially if there are a bunch of people in the car. I tried an experiment - I put shaving cream on half the windshield and the 2 windows on the driver's side of the car. The next few times I drove around, those 2 windows stayed fairly clear while passenger windows on the other side fogged up! Clearly it worked. However, the windshield was smudged and affected my night vision and I just couldn't rub in the shaving cream enough so I ended up having to windex it away. Today I put shaving cream on the other 2 passenger windows, having those 4 windows remain fog-free will be a relief. I hope I don't have to reapply often before winter ends.

Thanks man! I live in Denver and I work outside and am in and out of my bucket truck, so I get hot and sweaty from wearing many layers to keep warm which makes them fog up quickly when I get back in the truck! Tried it and it works great!

Super useful video, love the fact that you sectioned it off to show how well each one worked. I bought the first products. Ive used shaving foam in my bathroom mirror but it does take ages to buff away. I also got one of those moisture absorbing packs will see how the combo goes
