Learn how to fix a squeaky tensioner pulley in your car. The serpentine belt in your car powers the accessories such as air conditioning, power steering, the alternator, and waterpump.
Tensioner pulley wear will cause your pulley to squeak. A worn out pulley bearing or a worn spring in the tension pulley can also cause squeaking or a chirp. I show you how to use water to identify what type of squeak problem you have and then how to find the problem. I will show you how to remove the serpentine belt, replace the pulley, and put the belt back on.

Thanks so much for this video. I was able to eventually talk myself into trying this vs getting a mechanic to help me out with this. I got a quote for 650 bucks to change the serpentine belt and pulley. Smh, I decided to try my hand at this and successfully identified the Idler Tensioner Pulley and changed it in 4 minutes time with a simple, in stock purchase of 26 bucks at Advanced Auto. Turns out my serpentine belt was fine as it only had 5000 miles on it. It blew my mind that one bad bearing in a Idler Pulley was causing all that noise and performance issue. My 2001 Isuzu Rodeo is running like a dream now. You've inspired me to look for further improvements to keep my sweet lady of a ride for a long long time. I love this vehicle sooo much. Thanks a million sir! 👊

+Estiann du Plessis, I cant reply to your comment directly so I hope you see this. For my car, you can see in the video I loosen the bolt the normal counter-clockwise direction. Sometimes the pulley will have written on it which direction is loosen. Fan clutches have the direction to loosen and tighten written on them all of the time.

+ChrisFix can a bad Tensioner Pulley cause a ticking sound? I have a 2000 Chrysler Sebring JXi that Ticks like a time bomb at idle and low speeds but at about 30MPH+ the ticking is intermittent....I have no idea what it is but everyone says I need a new engine. No one has actually looked at it or traced where the sound is coming from all they do is listen. The sound is coming from the side of the engine compartment near the belts.....

Chow, after watching your videos on this topic I was able to determine my tensioner pulley was trashed. I tried to purchase a new one from the dealer but they could only sell me the whole pulley assembly with a much smaller pulley attached. I took option B' and took the old pulley to Napa and they were able to cross check the part number with the last four digits of the VIN and match it up with a new pulley of the same dimensions. This saved me a lot of extra cost and time. The pulley measured 102mm in case anyone needs that info. Thanks again for a huge assist!

Wow! You do an excellent job on instructional videos! I just watched this one and the other about the engine squeak and completely understand everything you said! With the right tools, I feel I can go fix the squeak myself, although not sure I could get the belt off by myself. I am probably two to 3 times your age, female and my hands hands have quite a bit of arthritis in them these days but I have done a lot of things under my own hood. Thanks a lot for making such a great easy to understand video that even a gramma like me can use!

Thanks for this (I have a similar aged Ranger). I found the video about 1 day late. I kept hearing the chirping sound from the front and on a ride yesterday the idley pulley bearing seized and sheared the belt. I pulled over immediately before I boiled the engine. I used this video and the replacement of the serpentine belt video for instructions to fix this today with a minimum of fuss. Many thanks

+Janet Irby-Miller, I cannot reply to your comment so I hope you see this. If they want $170 for just the pulley, they are crazy! You can get just the pulley for cheap ($25 or less depending on the car). If they want that for the tensioner installed, that is about an hours labor so the price is what it is. You can do it yourself easily for $50 like you said.

Buying the right tool for the job will save you time messing about by having to remove the wheel . I remember my last mechanic years ago taking my wheel off because he didn't have the correct tool and struggled with a rachet trying to get in there My belt snapped last week , got the breakdown out and he got me home, said I'd need a new tensioner and belt obviously, watched this and bought the tool. Took a lady like myself just over 30 mins to do Thanks for the video Saved me a few pennies at the garage 🤌

Thank you for the excellent video I wish I had watched your videos. It might have saved me a mjor part of $1500 repair bill My AC quit working recently ( not a problem per se, because I rarely turn it ON), and shortly there after, there was a constant noise from the A/C compressor area. A mechanic at the dealership said the"noise" was from the compressor pully and the compressor was "shot"; which I expected. They did not have a new( its a 10 + year old Subaru Forester, so it would probably have been a RMF compressor , I think)Compressor in stock so they would "order" one in. In the mean time he said I could frive the vehicle for shorter periods( like 20 km at a time, he said) The next day my serpentine belt poped and could not drive the vehicle. They replaced the compressor and belt for $1500 ! The same dealership mechanic said the AC compressor caused the serpentine belt to break Is their explanation credible in your humble opinion Thank you

Hi Chris, I have a 2006 Honda CRV that is making noise like this...I've bought the Gatorback belt via Amazon Direct and saved money as follows; 1) $69.25 vs. $11.28 from Amazon...so that's a huge savings: $57.97!!! this is an 83% cost savings.....ridiculous. I also saved $150 dollars on self installation; and I am NOT a prof. mechanic...it took me 40 minutes with a 14mm, 10mm sockets, wrench, a long screw driver, and a short #2 screw driver to pull the "button" connectors (save them for reinstallment underneath the wheel well). Savings on this tiny job: $150 + ~$58 = $208 2) any difference in your experience from "your demo" vehicle to the 2006 Honda, with respect to spacers on the Honda tensioner bearing please? We all need to save money on OEM parts...money is too hard to come by today to give ownership a 300-500% markup on parts. NOTE this everyone.

Great Video as always, These are great trucks still running strong. I recently bought a 1999 ranger xlt with the 3.0 It has 199000 miles and I ran into the same problem with the idler pulley squeaking, So I removed it it is the original, I cleaned the bearing removed the seal on both sides and repack it with high temp grease, put it back on and is nice and quiet. I have a replacement on order but we'll see how long this fix last. I thought I share this mod as a temporary fix while waiting for a replacement. Cheers..

Peter Dudek It sounds like it has something to do with either the tensioner spring, the belt, or the power steering pump. Is the belt new? It could have stretched out over time. The tensioner spring could be worn out so the belt isnt tightly against the pulleys. Or the power steering pump is not functioning correctly and the belt slips over it. I would try the water trick and let me know what happens: How to fix a squeaky belt (figure out where the squeak is coming from)

The shield comes with a replacement bolt which is slightly longer than the originals used to compensate for the thickness of the shield. To install loosen the tension on the belt then, unbolt the pulley discard the OEM bolt. Next insert the new bolt through the shield, through the pulley then tighten. Once in place flex the tensioner then slide the belt in place. I use the shield on both pulleys and the problem of the belt slipping off is eliminated.

I had that same exact squeaking noise on my 98 ford ranger v6 3.0. I changed the idler pulley after the water trick the squeak came back. Next thing to change the belt tensioner pulley and the squeak was still there. All the pulleys were all in line and the belt didn't not move back and forth as shown in the video. Replaced the belt and it still squeaked. So finally I replaced the belt tensioner assembly. The old belt belt tensioner assembly pin on the back was broken therefore causing the belt to have less tension on it. After I installed the belt tensioner pulley assembly no more squeaking irritating noise.

I had one where the harmonic balancer rubber was shrunk and the inner and outer parts were slipping. I found it when I tried to set the timing and saw that my old marks were way off.

I looked up the tensioner for the Ranger.. it's P/N 89233 Dayco. Of course, there are other brands. Google a picture of it and you will see that its held on with only one bolt. I think you should be able to find a video to do the rest.

Nice Job. Tried the spray bottle test on my sons '71 C10 pickup with a serpentine system crate motor and we thought we had the tension pulley pegged making the noise. It ended up being the idle pulley, but saved us time and $!

I am having this problem with my saturn sl1. The belt squeaks but insanely loud when I turn on the ac and have it in drive. I know it's not the belt because I had that replaced thinking it was the problem. You made this look very easy and I am thinking of taking a crack at it. Firestone wants 250 to fix it... Lil outrageous. Thanks for the vid and helping others in these situations.

Yea, it might be the tensioner itself (the spring part, not just the pulley). You might want to try this: (click) How to QUIET a squeaky belt

Hey Chris do you know any specifics on Honda accords? I heard they run on timing belts and are harder to fix? I have a 2002 Honda Accord v6 and the belt squeaks like crazy I personally thought It was the bearing, I did the water trick and the it stopped squeaking for a second so I assume it’s the bearing..any suggestions?

In order to change the alternator belt i need to remove the other 2. The car doesn't have a diagram. Do you know where can i get a diagram. I will like to change the belt myself. I dont want to take it to a shop. Please helpppppppp.

You forgot to mention the part where you have to push the tensioner all the way down to its maximum tension or “radius” so that when you’re tightening the new one on, you’re not just going up and down against tension and you’re actually tightening it so that the pulley doesn’t fly off when you’re going 60 mph on the freeway👍🏼
