Went for a 4 day solo backpacking trip up in New Hampshire this past weekend. With a forecast of unseasonable high temps forecast for 5 days I felt it would be a good idea to take full advantage.
I debated between doing the Pemi Loop again but instead came up with my own loop that would instead take me over the Southern Presidential Range along the AT, where I would then dip out at Oakes Gulf behind the Lake of the Clouds hut and proceed down into the dry river wilderness for a few days.
The trip went pretty much 100% as planned shockingly. With incredible views and weather for the whole trip.

I have been leaving trail and summit names out of many of my videos lately due to issues with what I would consider uneducated hiker behavior. The most notable of which is trash, and human waste / toilet paper I have been finding directly off trail. I kept some of the names in this video as I feel like the crowds are beginning to dwell a little bit as the seasons get colder. If you are using this video for planning purposes and are a newer hiker please watch this video before heading out on trail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6Uaqhl162tp3U.html Here is an article about the issue with trash and human waste specifically in the Whites www.nhpr.org/post/trouble-trails-forest-service-grapples-crowds-trash-and-human-waste#stream/0 Another article about Max Patch (an iconic part of the Appalachian Trail) and the issues occurring there www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2020/09/23/max-patch-residents-campers-creating-safety-hazards-mountain/5858936002/ Here you can learn about leave no trace (LNT) principles lnt.org/why/7-principles/ www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm

It's a shame so many people behave badly in the outdoors. 😒😣🤔 We have the same problem here in New Zealand as well. In many places now freedom camping is banned because of the carelessness of the ones who choose to leave bad messes. ❤️

HELL YEAH to this statement! I’m a local to the whites and an avid hiker. I’m always surprised by how reckless some videos from the whites are by not educating about appropriate preparation and behavior on the trail. Thank you for using your platform and doing your part to keep these mountains healthy, safe and beautiful.

I really enjoyed this video. You are getting better and better at this. I like breaking out my map and following along. That was easier to do on this video than some of your other recent videos, which are a bit more cryptic. I appreciate being able to follow on a map. One of the reasons I watch KZfaq videos such as yours is to prepare myself for what to expect. I've considered a loop similar to this, but after watching this video I would only do it in July - September. Thanks for doing all this work. By the way, I watch this on my high def television and it comes out beautiful. She won't admit it, but even my wife enjoys them.

Thanks for the memories. I was last in the Dry River around 1979-80. Lots of changes, but much is the same. I spent a night at long gone Dry River Shelter #2, which was located on an island. Glad you played it safe. That area is no place to break a leg, especially solo.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

Ya definitely wanted to play it safe. I was getting a little worried with the amount of snow around the lake of the clouds hut. I literally blazed my own path to the trail down and had the snow continued I definitely would have debated turning around and revising my game plan. I think I walked by where that shelter (#2) used to be earlier this summer. I think they tore the shelter down but now its a designated camp site. I really like the Dry River area. I've done a lot of exploring in there at this point. Stayed at the site of the previous Dry River 1 shelter a few years ago too.

Chris thanks for the videos you have come a long way in the choreographing of the trips. Your camera angles, editing, and final production really brings the trips to life. Can’t say enough about watching your progression and how you are putting out real professional quality type video these days. My wife and I really enjoy watching your posts. I’m a neighbor of sorts, I know you’re from the Boston area I’m from Peabody. I’m now 62 years old, my wife and I finished the 48’s a few years ago mostly day hikes with a few backpacking trips sprinkled in. I’d like to offer an opinion on your justification on leaving out pertinent information, trail names, lookouts, peaks etc. I am sure that you rely on various formats, apps, forums, maybe Facebook etc. to gather information about your trips. Much of that information is obtained and made available by the hiking community for the benefit, to help out and, inform fellow hikers. Many people look to many sources to educate themselves and to help plan trips, I’m am sure you benefit from other hikers inputs as well. I know your heart is in the right place but you are being incredibly selfish at the same time. I’ve being going up to the whites for 54 years the popularity of hiking has exploded and the hiking community for the most part is a very open and helpful community answering questions, helping out the less experienced, educating etc. Personally when I watch a video of yours it may be a backpack I’d like to go on with my wife, it would be extremely helpful to know good places to set up a tent, a good water source, some of the good lookouts, some of the things to watch out for etc. I’m sure you got helpful information from the hiking community in some way or another before you plan these trips. Again I know your heart is in the right place but I don’t think it’s making any impact at all and you are withholding some useful information from fellow hikers which could be beneficial, yet at the same time using the community for your benefit. To me it sort of comes across as look I'm out here enjoying this wonderful area and nature but it's over crowded and you can't. If you are really that concerned about your videos impacting the overcrowded situation in the whites then maybe you shouldn't be posting at all. I see comments all the time stating that " I really want to do this, or I can't wait to get up there hike, or you've really inspired me to hike". I’m not trying to be a jerk, you seem like a really good guy but just wanted to pass along my thoughts and some of the frustrations my wife and I get when watching your wonderful vids. Sorry to go off on you man but I'm a member of a few hiking forums, Hike-NH, Rocks on Top to name some local ones and I can't imagine the members withholding information of any kind from the hiking community.

Will copy and paste this reply I left to a comment somebody left on a video about the importance of Leave No Trace. Where this person insisted I was being “elitist” by not including trail or summit names. I think it answers a majority of what you said in your comment Original Comment: “Keeping the trail names and peaks secret seems a little elitist to me, given the fact that you already “got yours” and want to prevent other people from enjoying the same things. If you feel the trails are too crowded never forget that you are part of that crowding. I get that your heart is in the right place, but I still disagree” My response: “Not elitist in the least and not really sure how you can see it as so I am actively encouraging people throughout this entire video to get out there and enjoy but do so responsibly by following some guidelines for the benefit of all. I also still have videos posted from literally ALL of the 48 and the 52 lists that people can use for planning purposes. I am not trying to hide the fact these places exist or dissuade people from hiking. These peaks aren’t exactly hard to find the names of or find detailed trip reports of all over the internet. They are usually on a list in some regard and pics are readily available, posted all over social media, easily searchable online, and written about in books. My leaving the peak and trail names out was based specifically on the fact that I have an audience on this channel of 17,000 subscribers at this time and countless more that watch as non subscribed . Many being hikers who frequent the Whites. I tend to get all sorts of messages the week after I post a video of people telling me they then took the same route as me. Those are just the people that tell me. Who knows how many more may take the same trail and not shoot me a message. Which in all honesty isn’t the end of the world but in a year where the trails are seeing numbers of travelers they have never seen, many of which are new hikers, or possibly just older ones who don’t care to follow some basic principles like cleaning up after yourself and not defecating on the side of the trail there came a point where I felt like it was a good choice to leave the names out so I wasn’t indirectly responsible for the literal trashing of that specific trail or peak the following week or so when I would tend to get these messages. That was my reasoning and we can certainly agree to disagree With that said, I expect the crowds for the most part have died down at least a little with it now being later in the season and in the next 4 day backpacking trip video (the video you left this comment on) I did talk about what trails and summits I am on. And now that I have had the time to create this (LNT) video I can link it in the comments to all my old on trail videos and hopefully help teach new hikers who click how to properly respect the trails while out there. I am planning to keep the names in the next video but will look at each video on a case to case basis as crowds dwindle or swell during the year” In short, I do not think my leaving out the trail names is "selfish" in the slightest. In the last few videos I have also sprinkled in plenty of hints, especially in this video in particular, where anyone with a trail map can easily follow along where I am. I literally state throughout this video that I am on the Appalachian Trail, the names of almost all the peaks I went over, if not all of the names of the peaks, what tent site I stayed at on the 1st night, what gulf area I went down, what the trail conditions were like in that area, where I stayed on night 2 and where I exited back to my car. I am not really sure how much more info I can give I am under no obligation to talk about every aspect or detail of a trip. Nor name or show every parking spot, trail I took, peak names, view points, every water source and campsite I see along the way, etc. It's not the type of video I want to make or the type I want to watch. Where is the sense of adventure? TLDR: Just because I am not explaining every minute detail of a trip does not mean I am being selfish. I am also not telling people not to hike or “don't come here”. There are literally videos on my channel for every 48 and 52 peak still up that people can watch for planning purposes Hope you understand my explanation and if not we can respectively agree to disagree And of note, when I started hiking my main research for which trail I would hike that week would go something like - See a peak on a list (the 48 or 52 list of NH) - Look on the internet to see pictures of the views - Look on my map and choose which route/trails I would take - Try to find a video of the hike so I could see what type of trail conditions I could expect. Though finding video was not as common at this time I didn’t rely on anyone's videos, trip reports, apps, or the like to create a trip. A good trail map and knowing your limits and what you are comfortable with out on trail is the most valuable tool in planning

@@ChrisGoesOutdoors Thanks for the replay I appreciate your prospective and i also appreciate that people feel the need to take a stand or draw the line according to ones own perspective. Didn't mean to insinuated that you should be giving every detail along the way and certainly you can choreograph the video anyway you choose. It was more or a point of view from where I'm sitting and the frustration experienced. Again videos are great and wife and I appreciated the effort and time it takes to put them together. Thanks again and look forward to more of your adventures and maybe we'll see you up on the trails.

@ChrisGoesOutdoors
@ChrisGoesOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Having a filter is crucial for me as I can fill up as I go. The way I usually go is I will carry a liter if I am in a an area with seemingly plenty of water (like day 3 and 4 of this trip) and I will go with at least 2 in areas I know it could be no water flowing (like day 1 & 2). Sometimes you can gauge where water will be on map and reading trip reports. I use the guthook gps app too and it has some but not all water sources listed for most spots in Whites

I’ve had the map of it since 2018. Thought about doing it that year but didn’t want to try to bail out in work so close after the AT. It’s definitely up there for a want. I’ve done a ton of sections of it but would be great to do it in one go. Maybe this summer. Who knows
