Go take photos. Of anything. You have friends? Ask them to model. Like buildings? Go take pictures of some neat ones in your city. Go outside in the rain and take pictures off the reflections on the street. Try taking some close-up shots of some small items or insects or whatever. Hope that gives you a few ideas!

I've only been taking pictures of my friends and family and I don't have a website yet because I haven't started charging money yet but my Instagram has built about 50 pictures in a year, which is not a lot for a professional but I'm just starting my journey yet so yeah. My name has been spreading in my town but I still haven't gotten jobs so when I buy my new camera this month I'll start contacting local barbers/pubs/.. so I get my first jobs. Don't be shy to go on multiple shoots with the same friends

Before the E-mail address, before the logo, before an invoicing system and before the business cards you need far more important things. 1: An accountant to handle your taxes, particularly if you(wisely) incorporate to protect your personal assets. Trying to do 'bussiness' taxes yourself is foolish unless 'tax preparer' was your previous job title. Either you'll get audited for incorrect deductions or end over paying by not claiming some. 2: INSURANCE. No ifs ands or buts about it. Nothing can destroy your business quicker than a lawsuit. Whether it's because a light fell on someone or they slipped and fell on a shoot, even screwing up a job(lost the files on the way home?) can get you sued. That leads us to- 3: A lawyer that knows both contract and liability laws. You don't want to be shopping for a lawyer last minute, it generally costs you a lot more. 4: An operational budget. Just because you made $2K on a shoot today doesn't mean you'll do that as often as you need, like or even hope. First and foremost you need to put all of your income at the beginning of the month towards paying your accountant/insurance/lawyer/marketing/web hosting/etc BEFORE you pay yourself. I don't take a penny of income the first week of the month until I've made enough to cover my operational costs. How many aspiring photographers/creatives or any other entrepreneurial endeavors don't make it a year because they spent money on the business peripherals(logos/cards/website design) and gear rather than the universal things EVERY business needs?

Literally the video I needed to see. I’ve been struggling to really get my business fully in motion. I’d say things I wanted to do but I just never do them. I’ve gotten myself so lost on just the process of getting started. I’ve got the gear, I’ve got the time. I just need to do it. I was telling this to myself earlier actually so I’m glad I came across this video right now. I’m going to do it. I’m going to stop procrastinating and just do it. No more fearing the unknown. I’m going to take my chances and accept that nothing needs to be perfect and that failure is a part of the journey to success. If I fail at anytime, I’ll get back up and learn from it and keep on pursuing my passion. (Sorry this is kind of a thing for my self lol) I just gotta put myself on blast and call myself out for holding myself back. I’m going to do it. Im going to fully commit and establish my own media business. It’s something I’ve always wanted. No more excuses. I will become the best I can be in my field and I will learn and grow everyday. People can also check to see if you have a business license, and are a member of the BBB. You might be surprised to learn how many people do this. Also, joining Professional Photographers of America is a good idea.

The other thing you need to know is if you're on a shoot for a client's company or an event, go and meet other photographers or videographers, hand them a card and they've probably call you for other shoots. Try to know everybody in you're same area.

I used Fiverr to design both my logo and KZfaq intro bumper. I am just super happy with them. My advice is have your ideas, thoughts, examples and intentions written down. It’ll help you convey your expectations across to the designer and reduce the amount of revisions.

Another little tip maybe, when your website is opened it sais „not safe“ it’s a little thing to fix, ask the one who designed your website to make it as a safe website on google.

I want to learn more and see your behind the scenes when it comes to video marketing. Creating projects with clients, brands, companies. Video ads to commercials. Pre prod to prod to post prod. Would love to see more of that like how Daniel Shiffer does, he’s from canada too

Hi Chris! Really love the business side of the video and would love to see more of these, maybe even some for people who are not just starting out? I get all your points and agree with them for someone who is starting out. But being a designer it kind of comes across a bit conflicted for me. When you're talking about a high quality business card, but at the same time are getting a logo done with 50 dollars kind of devalues what a designer can actually do for you and your business. I'm totally with you on the aspect that when you're starting out and don't have a budget you should look at all your options, but there is a reason why brands spend thousands and thousand of dollars for logos.

I don’t have much work as I’m new but I made sure to have a recognizable brand. I’m based out of St Louis area code 314 and my name for it is 31Fourtography and my logo is a a lens with the STL skyline reflecting in it. I have had very positive feed back from most people for the name and logo, think it’s creative and unique.

Start with a cheap DSLR or mirrorless. I started with a Canon Rebel SL1 to see if I would enjoy it as a hobby in 2013, but now I recently sold it and got a full frame mirrorless. Had no idea I would enjoy photography as much as I do

Hey Chris! Great tips, but I think one important way to get a lot of this done that you didn't mention is finding friends you can colab with that have skills like design, websites, typography etc! I got my awesome (personal opinion but I am a little biased) logo done by a friend in exchange for some photos they needed of a building for their business website! I totally understand this was a sponsored plug for Fiverr though and think it's a great service if you find the right person to work with!
