LISTENING!!!!!! Man it’s so shocking how often I’ve encountered musicians when I was studying music in college and uni who don’t LISTEN INTENTLY to music as part of their “practicing”. IMO listening is the most important thing with any instrument, the same way a chef tastes food which makes them a better chef, it’s not just reading cook books and following instructions.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Chris liepe carries the same energy as Steve from blues clues and it’s the best compliment I believe I’ve offered in my life

I only discovered after years of frustration that I couldn't actually tell if I was singing in MY own voice or not. So many years of playing covers/karaoke and trying to imitate other singers, I wasn't ever singing correctly and naturally and always felt something was 'off'. The way I retrained my brain was to spend weeks and weeks just 'speaking' lyrics in my natural talking voice and then it slowly morphs into' singing' as the subconscious takes over. It takes a lot of discipline but it's so worth the effort to find yourself and your NATURAL voice. Why do we always want to sound like someone else when we have our own wonderful, unique and special voice hidden inside us?

Point 3 hits home with me. I’ve practiced guitar for years and have never once felt embarrassed or doubtful about what I was doing, I just kept practicing because that’s the method. Adversely I’ve never once felt comfortable or even appropriate practicing singing, so I don’t. I’ve recognized this for years and I still can’t bring myself to practicing singing. It’s as if at that moment I realize how stupid I look trying to do what Marvin Gaye or Chris Cornell does. Thanks for your advice.

For years, I was singing as someone else. Then I stopped wanting to be my idols and allowed my song take me over using my extremities as their conduit. I started thinking of singing as a performance versus a necessity. I’ve noticed a change and after I put out a single people started saying they liked my voice, which blew me away. Confidence. But realistic confidence is the right key…

AMAZING insight Chris. Listening back to my own vocals has been way more beneficial than I could have ever imagined. I record all of my practice now, and I'm learning so much about what I'm doing right/wrong. This is huge!

Realistically what helps is: 1) not being tone deaf 2) not having major vocal chord damage, or born with irregular shaped vocal chords 3) Practice singing exercises for years and sing along to songs, figure out what will break up your vocal chords and make you horse for a day…. And keeps pushing your limits…your vocal chords will get stronger and stronger, and you’ll work your way up to a song you couldn’t do at first. 4) believe in the process of #3 You can believe all you want, but if you can’t hear the notes in your head before actually singing them…. You have NO CHANCE at being a very good singer. You’ll be the one getting up to sing Karaoke, and everyone will be thinking, holy hell… this hurts my ears. Haha Just be honest with yourself.

Three things to help you be a better singer. Triple your vocal track when you record it. Then add a ton of processing and effects! That's four things!

Been thinking of learning to sing because I've been learning more guitar lately so this was a pretty well timed video. Funny enough the mindset is similar to learning guitar or I imagine any new skill, take the stuff that works for you, drop the stuff that isn't, and the only way you'll get there is by doing it, a lot, and figuring out what your niche is. Most of all, doing so with the mindset that it's not a sprint, it's not a marathon, it's just a thing that you want to learn, and the only one putting deadlines on you is yourself, so relax lol, have fun :)

When I watch your videos all I can really say is thank you. I struggle with anxiety a lot and am always afraid that people wont love and accept my voice. Basically I sing to impress and not Express. You've taught me a lot. Thank you so much

You are the controller the observer and the desire. Thank you for the emotional teaching it really helps. Instead of being so step 1 step 2. I feel this way of thinking already. I do this even with producing. I'll put headphones on and listen to a song and say i know what they are doing producing wise and I'll see myself doing it in my head.

This is the best explanation I've ever heard!)) Singing is about telling a story with feeling and emotion through your voice. But we often run into the technique, although this is not a goal, but just an instrument.

That “listening” thing is something I’ve been encouraging my students to do for years! Stop listening as a music consumer and start listening as a musician. Break it down and figure out why your favourite singers are your favourite singers.

I'm in my mid 40's, and still marvel when certain adults speaks,, they magnetically attract you to listen.. And its not because their loud. That's a talent I'd love to learn.. even through singing

This is my favourite video you've done so far, actually related so much to it and understood exactly what you mean. I'm a guitarist and have been for over 10 years now and I guess in the last couple years I've slowly sang more and louder, grown that fearlessness without realising and started to sing my favourite stuff and I imitatted for ages and now I guess slowly using my own voice but I feel that I sing kinda flat sometimes. I'll keep trying and this video really helped me want to keep growing and hoping to sing better!

My vocal coach Augusto Enriquez last week told me to not focus do much on get better all the time, or to try and rush progress. But to relax and be content with learning what I need to step by step and to work with time as opposed to working against it. My singing has felt a lot more relaxed and better ever since

They key thing that has helped me on singing is resonance and staying open and relaxed.

Amazing breakdown, I'm no professional, but I grew up singing to the radio, reading lyrics like poetry, and for a lack of a better term, feeling the emotional texture of a song. Like the classic line from White Men Can't Jump, "You may hear Jimmi, but you don't listen to Jimmi." (IIRC) I feel it's a big reason why musicians are often described as "Troubled". They put their very essence, their experiences and emotions into their singing. Similar to what you said, when I hear a verse, I do learn the cadence and words as a baseline, but then when I sing, I picture how the line relates to an experience I've had in my life and in a sense "Conjure" that emotion in the present and infuse it into the verse. Fearlessness, I would agree is the key, as true artistry in music is about broadcasting your hopes, fears, traumas, and every emotion you experience in a communication to anyone within earshot. The ultimate vulnerability, not only to be honest with yourself, but with the world at large...it really is liberating, but it's funny, when I'm not singing, I'm a total tech nerd introvert who grew up almost paralyzed by the fear of what others thought of me... A fun thing I like to do is to sing along to a song by the opposite sex. But as opposed to copying their style and technique, I try to sing backup/accompaniment from the perspective of my sex. It's probably easiest to get the idea doing it with groups like Fleetwood Mac, who often have a man singing about a woman or vice versa... It truly is about the mindset, the headspace where you take the mental as well as vocal patterns laid down by others and distort them to fit your own perspective...anyway, that's my two cents...Keep on rockin' dudes... Oh, and one last thing, don't be afraid of making funny faces while singing, it's actually a good thing and gives the audience another cue as to the emotions you are trying to express...e.g. furrowing your brow and squinting for anger, tilting your head back on crescendos, closing your eyes while "Imagining", shaking your head when singing about disbelief, Y'know, that sort of thing...a second fun game I play is to almost turn a song into a game of charades. trying to express the song physically in time with the music while singing, almost as if I were singing to a deaf person or doing choreography for backup dancers...

It's the umbrella under which we must stand in order to improve our singing.

Really awesome advice and I love how it's all connected. When you learn to listen analytically and 'feel' your voice you can really unlock a new way of developing your sound. But it's crucial to be in the mindset of experimenting and exaggerating for the sake of learning. I would personally add a fourth element that helped me write more heartfelt songs and perform them with more expressiveness: embracing vulnerability. Rock on, Chris!

I've told person after person that the biggest difference between an amateur and professional musician is confidence. Being fearless and trying everything and really digging into sounds and not worrying about what others think is so important. Im a drummer that used to be so bored playing 2 and 4 until I dug into the emotion of music and impact on myself and the listener and when I can bring out my weirdness and when I just serve a song

I love your approach, I'm gonna take these tips and apply it not just to my singing, but to my bass playing as well!

My top three 1. Look after yourself physically. Get the most from what you have. This includes hydration, warming up, and being fit enough to give yourself a change 2. Sing regularly. Record it and listen to it. Be your own critic. What sounds good, what doesn’t. Identify what sounds good and ask why. Do the same with the bad. Early on most singers think that their good stuff is the good bit in the song. Often not the case. They miss the understanding of control at the beginning and often overcook it. 3. Listen to others. Emulate but don’t copy. This is a great way to learn control and expression in your own voice. Eventually you sing it in your own voice. Enjoy it all!

I've started watching since day 1 of this channel and i've been entertained and greatly benefited and improved my singing! I'm a amateur learning singer What I like about Chris sometimes his approach and practice are not the typical singing excersises, And the practical technique explained and demonstrated are direct, useful and creative. I imagined Chris Liepe participating in singing contest and I would be a great fan supporting! Chris looks good and young, good singing skill, could play instruments and songs writing abilities. Don't have to go all the way to champion as talents are hard to judge. Tara Simon went back to teach singing after competition and her experiences shared are gold! Hi Chris, it would add a golden moment in your singing career path and more people could enjoy your talent from this exposure!

your second point was for me the most important discovery in my life I started doing it six months ago, at 55, and wish I had found it earlier You can put on headphones with a backing track so you can’t hear your own voice well And just put your attention on the sensations in your throat and mouth Like you say, this needs to happen BEFORE you try to get a good sound coming out I love your different approach to this

One of the best ways to learn to draw is simply to actually LOOK at what you are drawing. It's really that simple. No individual line is really harder or easier than any other, shading an area of an image isnt particularly complicated. The real skill is to learn to see clearly. Despite being a "learner" kind of guy, i still can't help but feel singing doesn't follow 'normal logic'. I hope i'm wrong here. I've tried watching all sorts of before and afters, and everyone seems to stay crap if they started crap, meanwhile random 10 year olds are great on week 1.

Nice set-up. Great advise. 20 years ago I got lessons and the lady gave me a chart of a face and over 50 points to focus on for effect. Wish I still had that on me.

I guess my biggest curse and blessing is my ever-changing enthusiasm for something. I always get super excited for an artist and then obsess about learning the technique or style until I am able to replicate it. The downside is that I learn to imitate and not to discover myself, a something I am actively trying to work on right now. It is hard man, for some reason there is something inside me that tries to control every single aspect of my voice and yet I sound the best when I am being stupid and essentialy make fun out of singing. As if it was this inner struggle, a conflict of my own idea who am I and of who I am in actuality. What the hell..? Now I am being a philosophical smartass, haha. Right now I am super inspired by Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die since they released a new record. I love how expresive he is on that record - insane screams, great heartfelt singing and even crazy sarcastic rambling. It feels so free of all the chains we put on ourselves.

The importance of active listening - specifically to yourself - is impossible to overstate both for singing and for playing instruments. I struggled through years and years of being pretty bad at music because I simply could not actually hear myself and didn't realize it.

I always do covers trying to mimic the singers because, to me if the song is in the wrong key or changed to be easier on my voice, it doesnt sound like it at all. It messes me up on my own stuff, but im getting better at liking my voice. Great stuff chris, and nice helena cover😎

Let’s be honest here, some people have “it” while some people, like myself, are just complete shit. Kinda strange because I can tune my guitar by ear just fine, but as soon as I try and hit a vocal note, I’m off by two steps at least. Plus I just don’t have the ability to sing and play at the same time.

funny - I'm in a band and just starting to sing some backups...and I found this video. I *LITERALLY* was working today on a guest lecture I'm giving in a specific technical profession and the entire presentation I was writing was about taking ownership for their career. To hear it (same day) from you applying to something I am trying to learn really was like an avalanche level A-Ha moment to me.

I have found that breathing correctly has been the most helpful method for me. I use my diaphragm for breath control to push the notes out. I've been singing in a band for 10 years, playing out publicly, and I find that warming up your voice before a gig is always helpful.

Chris, I’ve been watching this channel for a longtime, ever since my dream of being a rock singer came about I always found myself chasing perfection. I always had this picture in my head that I needed dead on pitch and a bunch of range to be like my favourite singers like Chris Cornell, Robert plant, Scott weiland Ronnie James dio, Paul dianno and so on. My question to you is how long did it take you to find this mindset? What inspired you to start thinking this way and wanting to share your information with other people?
