This a very helpful exercise for me. I was disgusted with my limited range since I was trying to sing everything in my chest voice. I discovered that I have a much better range than I imagined. Delightful!

Awesome, Chris! I realise now that I'd been doing this before when trying to reach higher notes, now I understand why it actually works!

I really like how Chris is not just explaining, but also demonstrating every step! I've watched plenty of vocal coaching vids and often you see some demo of a voice position, but it's from an already trained voice that you just can't reproduce if you're newbie like me (esp. when it's out of your speaking registry), and are still left in the dark, or very likely convinced that nature didn't give you singing voice. But I love how Chris demonstrates every step of the process, and gives us the milestones on the way that help us find the solution! I haven't tried this method yet (just saw it now), but I'll definitely try it out. I'm kinda stuck up to F4 (though last year after some fixing some health issues it seems I got an extra semitone or two, and can occasionally reach F4# & G4, but still not in a usable way), and even got (ulgy!) falsetto on few occasions only. I also definitely can feel being tied to my chest-voice. I also like it :) which I guess is the reason I instinctively try to push the chest-voice high ... but it just doesn't work.

This is gold. Can't believe i almost skipped this video. I have a fairly decent high range but i always seem wear out my voice within about 30 minutes. Just realizing that what I've been doing is pushing my chest voice and wearing out my chords because i push them too hard when hitting high notes. Doing this exercise i could instantly feel how my throat was waaay more relaxed and it was much easier sustaining a clean note. Going to try this out and see if it doesn't help me during longer partice/jam session. Thank you for making these videos Chris. It is nice to be able to have such a great vocal coach even though we are in way different places on the planet.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm a second tenor, and I sing in head and mixed voices a lot, and I get a lot of compliments on the way I hit the high notes. Also, I'm working on improving my lower register by practising stuff by people like the Verve Pipe and Johnny Cash.

Chris I gotta say I love your videos. I've been trying ti find my singing voice since I was a kid and haven't had much luck. I just turned 40 and finally realized I got three inner voices and didn't know I could mix them until the other day. It has lit a fire in me and I've been playing music non stop. I can't belive I can access these highers notes with my mixed voices it's amazing. Thank you so much!

You nailed it here. It’s not easy to embrace the vulnerability of head voice and to instead fall back on pushing chest voice with poor results. Early 20 yr old Gnecco was the only guy I knew who was willing to go there. I recall him doing a lot of falsetto on stage that eventually blossomed into the force of nature it is today. Thanks!

This is incredible! I can also sing high notes, head voice, pretty easily but, when it comes to mixed, I was feeling I was pushing hard up against something when going high. Like too much pressure going through something small and I couldn't release my high mixed voice coming from chest up. Then, voila. you post this, I go at it from the head voice down and I'm singing free!! I can't even believe it. This is my go to drill for a while. I've been trying to sing 'Jane' by Jefferson Starship as a challenge and was never able to sing it freely until now! I always felt and sounded like it was really squeezed! Wow! Thanks so Much Chris!!!

In the classical/opera world head voice is equated with falsetto, which is a dirty word. Tenors take all the chest weight to the top . Integrating the falsetto with the rest of the range. This does that.

Thanks for this Chris! I think this exercise is just what I need to increase my range and find my mix.

There are a couple exercises in Chris' "Aggressive Vocalist" course that use the "flipping" break shown here. The course is worth that alone. It's helping me access my mix better than the other approaches I've been working with the past year or so. As a bonus, even though I'm not interested in aggressive vocals per se, I might be able to do that at some point and it becomes another "tool in the toolbox" that's worth the time and effort. Anything to unlock that ever elusive (for me) mixed voice is good!

I already know how to be in mix, i think i know how to belt (maybe?) but man, I just know I learn something new in EVERY Chris video! Man, you are helping me to achieve my vocal dreams, really!

Thanks! I was doing these exercises last thing in the evening, laying in the bed. In the morning I tried again, voice was little bit tired, but the gap between chest and head, the falsetto treshold, had become less notisable, smoothier, softer. I think, I will get my larynx muscles to do the right thing with these ecercises.

So I use my headvoice all the time. It's what is easiest for me to access. But somehow I forgot how to do it and cannot access it and just ended up getting really scared I messed up my voice. But this actually helped me a lot!

I can go from chest to head with the same note but break when I try to transition back into chest. Gonna keep working on it, starting at that comfortable note choice

I used to sing pretty high stuff with a band, but after some health issues and long months of recovery i got stuck in such a limited range of my headvoice. This video and excersice was the key to place my head notes correctly, which opened a whole octave in my upper range!!! There's still a lot work to do, but thank you a lot! Your channel always has a good vocal recipie for any situation! Cheers ))

Great explaination, Chris! 🤘💯🍻 Typical example is "Don't you cry" by Kamelot where Roy Khan breaks into the head voice in the chorus (heavenly!) however for the purpose of beauty of the song he as even extremely great singer wasn't singer for constant high pitched songs that he was pushed to do which exhausted his vocal over decade + of constant tour with Kamelot.

I seem to be in an alternate universe where everything is backwards. I can sing high notes all day long till the cows come home; yet this is useful in that it is actually about expanding the chest voice range. Interesting

Came here because of a recommendation from a fellow Redditor. This is definitely helping me work on my vocals. I’m hoping to do covers of songs from artists like STARSET and Citizen Soldier, and even making my own music. This music definitely helped me hit higher notes.

I’m surprised you haven’t setup your own vocal academy yet, you’re a better teacher than Ken Tamplin. It’s great for us that you haven’t, but if you did, I would probably buy it. You’re THE only vocal coach that I have ever understood what they meant and took real value from. Thanks Man!

10 minutes of Mickey Mouse noises later, I’ve learned a significant amount about the theory behind what I’ve been doing on my own. Always been way too nervous to sing in front of others, so I mostly do it at home and self analyze and change my methods around until something works without hurting.

Chris now I am on to something!

Chris, This is one way to get up there, but respectfully I'm not sure this is the best way to get to the open throat, powerhouse, operatic sounding voices of some of the old school guys. Just my opinion. Your thoughts are welcomed.

Thank you Chris! This is really a great video. I've been seriously trying to sing for the past 7 months and thank God I've figured out lots of things naturally. However not dragging my chest up has always been really hard for me. After trying this in the car a couple times today I was sliding all over my range and through my break. I was even hitting notes like A5s and B5s and I'm naturally a bass with a tessitura of E2 to E4. It's so amazing the hear and feel these high notes! Thank you!! I have a question. I've struggled with singing high notes and feeling lots of strain and push in my chest. I've tried adding more air when that happens and sometimes it fixes the problem a little bit, but I haven't been able to truly fix the problem. Could you give me any advice or make a video on this? I like this and have been practicing lip trills like this too, but I feel like there’s always some chest voice there limiting me no matter what I do. Haven’t really felt my head voice (at least not in the same way) since I was a lot younger, well over a decade.

i'm loving a lot of your videos but i have to say you really have a talent for taking a short point and making it as long as possible. i understand its for the algorithm and what not but it really feels like it drags on. like this video was full of great stuff, but really only needed to be like 5 mins. what you're saying is direct and easy to understand. it doesn't need to be beat to death like this. many of your other videos are double to triple this runtime as well. its a bit much for the viewer to sit through.
