After hitting 10k subscribers on KZfaq, I quietly stepped back from the platform. This makes sense, as even creators who have been at it for 8+ years are stepping off the treadmill. Unlike TV shows or music artists who take breaks, KZfaq feels different because of the closer relationship you build with your audience. We fear that followers will lose interest, that the ever-changing algorithm will leave us behind, and that a necessary break could render us obsolete and invisible. Moreover, the average creator doesn’t have the financial cushion to afford a two-year hiatus without compensation.
In light of these challenges, it’s crucial to treat our creative endeavors more like a business. We need to value ourselves and our work more seriously by not selling ourselves short. Want a sponsor? Quote them four times your usual rate. Selling a course? Double the price. Offering consulting or coaching? Set your hourly rate uncomfortably high. Sure, it’s easier said than done, especially when you need the money, but this approach ensures that you’re not undervalued. If clients balk at the price, it’s an opportunity for negotiation that often lands you a better deal than you started with. Taking responsibility for our careers means understanding that we control how we show up and manage our content, ensuring a sustainable creative journey.

I think the biggest issue creators are having is that they have seen a sharp decline in revenue, despite putting out consistent content. My observation is that more and more creators are attempting to lure their audience off of the YT platform and into their own system/training/club/etc. Once off YT, the creator sets the terms and controls their destiny, not YT - which is sensible. I would never, and I mean never, rely on a social media platform for my main source of income.

I 100% agree. Building your own house is as important as renting the space on main street (aka KZfaq / Instagram / X / LinkedIn). And yet, I think these are two different topics. A lot of these creators actually can and want to retire… but it says nothing about the ecosystem and much more about those who've built a career here and are finishing a season of their work life.

Not there yet, to stop now. Need to keep going. My sacrifice season still on... But maybe before retiring I will get an editor first. That would give me some time to rest :)

What are you looking to get? I'm using openshot but it's slow. My channel doesn't bring in enough money to justify spending much on an editor.
