I watched this film a second time to look for more “clues” that I may have missed: the scene where the main character is running from “Gabriel” inside her home, slams her bedroom door, and leans against it saying over and over “It’s all in my head. It’s all in my head.” WHOA. Yep, he literally is IN YOUR HEAD.

It's actually more of a suppressed memory of how her parents used to say it's (imaginary friend Gabriel) is all in her head. I was wondering at first why she would tell herself that when she was literally assaulted and saw her husband die in that house just a few days ago.

Unfortunately I feel this is a kind of movie that you have to be proven extremely successful in your career, because it's so risky and there's so much production value going on (the action scenes must be so expensive), and that's why we'll hardly ever get another one of these in a while.

that's true for example the conjuring 2 (a movie I love) cost the exact same to make but this movie isn't even going to be 1/10th as profitable that's obviously attributed to the fact that we're in a pandemic now and this movie was made available on hbo right away but still this movie will probably end up losing a lot of money which is disappointing because it makes the likelihood of movies like this getting made even less

You may need SOME success in a career in film before making something like this but for the most part it’s more about how you pitch your idea to a studio and having confidence in your idea/pitch. @@dougcrane8031 I don't mean to be rude, but I'm uncertain of what kind of confirmation you're expecting to find. Chris already highlighted that studios today don't want to promote unconventional horror anymore. Adding in the fact this was promoted as being from the conjuring guy, the studio marketed it as being like his previous work. Which is why imo the twist works so well, by lulling you into a false sense of familiarity it then turns the person's expectation on it's head by turning the wackiness up to 100.

I found myself saying “Whaaaaaaaat?” many times during the first half of the movie. I was guessing certain things like that somehow she was doing these things. I was definitely off though in how she was involved. Once the reveal happened I just enjoyed the rest of the ride. I still feel there are elements that could have been improved upon. I feel like the desire for a blood connection came off as just dialogue rather than relatable motivation and if that had been somehow enhanced it would have added the final layer to turn it from good second half movie to great movie that truly subverts your expectations and gives purpose and growth to the main character.

This is the type of movie you get to make when you make $3 BILLION in profit over the movies you have directed or produced. After making nearly $1b in profit from Aquaman and desire to keep Wan for the sequel WB were likely 'go make whatever you want' and gave him $40m, which is just 1% of the profit. Given that the movie concept was developed by Wan and his wife (who also acts in the movie) this was a 'keep him happy movie' from the studios perspective.

Very sensitive to gore, body horror, medical settings/cancer scares, and abuse here, yet I really enjoyed this, only scene I couldn't look at was the surgery footage, yet I still really didn't want to miss anything during it! Like I genuinely had such a good time with the production work and just analysing every little clue, the twist was just incredible. And I like that it isn't too serious and has a lot of camp, the delivery is improved by Gabriel's unexplained parkour skill and all the drama of the ridiculous script, right off the bat I immediately got the vibes that this is to be viewed like an anime or something, rule of cool. I even remember thinking of a similar but way underdeveloped concept at one point years ago too after reading Junji Ito stories, this idea that an innocent girl breaks out of a corrupt research facility where she was in utero with a weaker conjoined twin attached at her brain, who when presented to the researchers to help with her survival, they used her as an experiment in body modification, birthing a human with winglike limbs on the back, extra eyes on the head, and another consciousness, to be manipulated into thinking they were a single human with her own extra parts. Couldn't work out a compelling story around the intro though, had many errors. Malignant has a similar idea but fully realised it a rounded out storyline. I really enjoyed it.

Someone said “I couldn’t take this movie seriously”…. I don’t think it was supposed to be. I enjoyed the film because of how campy it was but hey it’s not for everybody.

Like Chris Stuckmann mentions in the video, it was most likely the marketing that had hurt this film. It probably attracted the wrong kinds of people who expected a serious non-campy film

I'm so glad that you and others in the comments had such a great time! I'm glad this movie gave you hope. I totally agree that we need more originality. I hope comedy can come back, too! There's got to be a good way to make it without insulting people...

I always suspected, but if I was unsure, I now know for sure: You, Mr. Chris Stuckman, just represent exactly my opinions of things. That’s the greatest thing. I am so amazed. You had the exact rights word to describe how I felt.

Chris Stuckmann, great review as always. About your comment that why can Madison see Gabriel across the street as a plot hole, it's not, it's because they share the same brain, so Gabriel can make her see anything he wants, even if he's really not down on the street. This is a masterpiece of horror, it's a very original story, and the best twist I can remember. Best of all, he puts breadcrumbs all over the movie building up to it, such as the names in the titles, or when he follows Madison running around the house from above, which would be great camera placement even if it didn't have meaning, but later in the movie we find out why and it's mindblowing. And you're right, I wasn't expecting much from the trailers, in fact I waited two weeks to watch it because the trailer doesn't show what an amazing movie this is.

This was the craziest fun horror movie I've seen in a long time. Reminded me of the whole giallo horror style with the Dario Argento inspired closeups of the wide horrified eyes and the use of red lighting. Brilliant and a wild ride.

6:35 I think this is why I love A Tale Of Two Sisters. You have absolutely NO IDEA what’s going on (what is and isn’t real) until almost right at the end and when you realise what the truth is, it gives you chills.

I really appreciate this take, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this most bizarre movie. I had the exact same viewing experience, although I almost gave up when the turn came. Then I realized I'm not likely to see something this weird anytime soon, and, thankfully, kept watching. I think it was actually the appearance of Zoe Bell that gave me the camp context I needed!
