Love this movie because all the things actually happen. That elevator falls. That bus explodes. That subway train crashes thru all the things. I saw this at a preview screening one week before the actual release. Exhilarating! So exciting and funny. I re-watched it about six years ago for a project, having not seen it for a decade (probably longer), and was so joyful at the celebratory chord that the film's score strikes when Keanu and Sandra emerge from underneath the bus on the sliding platform and skid to safety. In fact, the whole reason why I went to see "Chain Reaction" two years after "Speed" came out is because one of the TV commercials used a piece of the "Speed" score. I KNEW that that music wouldn't be in "Chain Reaction", but the simple fact of that music's inclusion in the commercial got me excited to see a much less exciting movie.

I love the immediate focus/gushing on the writing. Speed is one of my favorite examples of good clean movie writing and structure. Screenplay 101 stuff to geek out over. Three acts, three vehicles. Jack's arc is clearly spelled out at the end of act 1. Just about every single minute adds something to the plot. Average a minute per page of screenplay, end each one with some new problem thrown at the hero, and you've got a movie that is also literally a page-turner. Not one minute/page wasted adding new threat or problem or question, just unrelenting intrigue to glue people to the screen. And it's not as simple as just that because each matter needs to be satisfyingly resolved by the end. Love me a textbook 3-act fast-paced action movie. Great choice, man!

I was lucky enough to see this in the theater when it was first released. I knew almost nothing about it ahead of time and was a little bit hesitant because I hadn't seen many action movies up to that point. My friend wanted to check it out, so I decided to join him. Ended up being one of my favorite movie-going experiences ever. You touched upon most of the elements that made this movie great. I think one of reasons it works so damn well, is that it manages to make the viewer feel like they're actually riding the bus right alongside Keanu, Sandra and the rest of the passengers. When they're finally successful in getting all of those people safely off the bus, and then the two of them glide away together into the embrace of those orange cones, the entire audience in my theater erupted into applause! It was just incredible.

Imagine pitching this movie as "the most exciting bus ride ever". Channels like this help me appreciate when I see something done well. It's nice to be sucked into a movie enough to accept what's on screen in the fiction of it, but taking a step back and seeing the real risks and coordination and logistics required to present what you're seeing is another layer of fun.

I saw this in Cinemas on a very big screen back in the 90ies. And I truly loved it. Rewatched it recently with my two teen daughters and they adored it too.

That smile and deep breath at the beginning 🤣 full agree! My grandma had two tapes: the first tape of Titanic and Speed. Speed is one of my favorite odd comfort movies when I want to feel close to her ❤

My family was in a Chalet for my birthday and my cousin was in love with this movie and she got the VHS tape as one of her Christmas gifts. We then immediately popped it in and gathered around to watch it.

It's funny how Chris mentioned about the cans. Every time I'm in my car and come to a tight corner, I'm like, "Everyone to this side of the bus!"

I was living in Abu Dhabi at the time and went to the cinema with my mum to see this movie at 6 years old! Been my favourite movie ever since!

i have two big memories after watching this movie with my parents. We left the theater at sunset. I remember seeing the sunset as we were driving on the highway and remembering the bus driving with the sun in the back as they were holding forbthe recording. Also, the ADR when Hopper tells Jack to get back real fast, but you can see he says something else. I've always wondered what he actually said.

I really like your statement that the opener (being 23 mins) is actually basically just a finale, it really sets the tension going for the film and doesn’t let up!

Yes, I saw this in a theater at Penn State when I first started college during a summer session. With almost no one there, I had no one to interact with and then this movie came out and I saw it a half dozen times. My favorite movie.

I saw it on VHS 📼 back in 2009 when I was either 14 or 15. Watched it again on 4K UHD 📀 during the pandemic when enough time had passed that I had forgotten how great it was and it was like seeing it for the first time. An Action Movie Masterpiece!

Speed is fantastic. One of my all time favourites. It's the kind of movie I could watch over and over and never get bored with it. I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I've watched it.

I went and watched this five times in theaters that summer. This and True Lies were my movies of 1994. By the way…I get goose bumps when Jack and Annie get off the bus. I credit it to the Mark Mancina crescendo score. Friggin awesome right there

I once read a book about screenwriting for action movies and the writer praised "Speed" like every 5 words. I love this movie

This is def the most memorable movie from my childhood. Greatest action movie score ever. My Dad made it a point to always have me watch action movies with him. Me and my sister would always repeat the one liners in this gem. “50, stay above 50” Lol timeless classic

One of my favorite movies. Period. I watched it on a rental VHS with a 19" CRT type of TV with low resolution and fxxked up color. I started watching it on a sofa, then I moved on to the floor , and at the end I was sitting within two feet of the TV. I was literally glued to the TV. The movie was that good. The movie didn't let you go. One action scene after another. CGI was non-existent. Everything looks real. I didn't know Keanu and Sandra then. But they had excellent chemistry in the movie. It was a ride.

Speed would be shown on Dutch television several times a year (probably because of Jan de Bont's roots)! So I was lucky enough to be able to watch it countless times in the early 00s. Brilliant film
