I have one of the Magswitch "MagJig" 90lb that spends most of it's time on the bottom side of the tail of my anvil. I also use it a lot to clamp my steel ruler to the anvil along side of my hot cut to quick measure pieces.

Id like to have a magnetic nut holder for bolts, nice to never have to use two hands again.

I’ve see those at my welding store. Was reluctant to try them thinking they would end up the same way others are. All PLUGGED up. I barely use them anymore.

That looks pretty cool. When you did the iron dust demonstration, it reminded me of the magnetic toy "Wooly Willy" - are you old enough to remember that?

Will have to look into those. Soon I will be looking for quite a few tools. I just got the "ok" from my wife to build myself a workshop. Any advice on starting size, I can always expand later.

+John Wood I would suggest a shop as large as your budget would allow :-) quite seriously though. If you're needing a cheap and economical option you can pretty much Smith in just about any size shop as my first shop was only 6 by 10. I'm glad you're getting into the Brotherhood of smithing congratulations

I think it would be great to see you doing some reviews for a change. The magtech products seem well made but I doubt that they are the only products you use in your shop. Why not do a series of reviews spread out between demonstrations showcasing some of your tools being used?

Gonna ask an oblivious question but what are all those cut stars for behind the magnets? Oh, also, the product reviews are kinda interesting to watch for a change

Very interesting. They are new to me. How do they work?
@ChristCenteredIronworks

+Craig Mooring not quite sure the science behind them. So your guess is as good as mine I do know that they work well though :-)

Clearly! I did not see any indication that batteries are involved, and I can't imagine there are any that small that could make a magnet that strong, anyway. The switch seems to be purely physical (vs. electrical or electronic).

tubalcain did a video on magnetic indicator bases (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNmiq92cx7HSm5c.html). I would say that they work exactly the same way. He does a much better job explaining how they work than I could, and he even takes one apart. You can skip abound two and a half minutes into the video, but the whole video is only eight and a half minutes.

Thanks, Brian. Although Tubalcain did not explain it at all (He simply took it apart and showed how the inside moves when the handle is moved.), some of his commenters did. I wish they had done the narration; then it might have been perfectly clear.

Yes there are some that are specially designed with ground clamp abilities. The Amps allowed are specced.

they are strong but nowhere near advertised magnetic force. around 1/3. you can measure with digital pull scale.

Don't be tempted you buy the harbor freight switched magnets. They're garbage, and harbor freight won't allow any negative (fair and polite) reviews of their magnet. It has extremely weak holding power, while claiming 90lbs, also junk switch fails to disengage
