New Zealand full back Christian Cullen runs right into a "thunderous" tackle by Wales centre Scott Gibbs during the match in November 1997 at Wembley Stadium in London.

Cullen was said to be very strong back in the day but it didnt translate to raw fend or tackling strength. Both of which were a weakness. Anyway look up Bryan Lima's tackles on Cullen.

I read that pound for pound Cullen was the strongest All Black during their gym testing. Gibbs post rugby league was a monster though. This is a few months after the 1997 Lions tour where he smashed and ran over every Saffa on the field.

What are you on about? Cullen didn't have a weak fend...bizarre claim. This is one tackle in a game. It may have escaped your attention that Cullen made sure the ball was recycled quickly and NZ were able to exploit a big overlap on the blindside.

Cullen was a great tackler. Made heaps of try saving tackles by smashing people into touch

The ongoing NH cope of trying to portray NZ as being weak defensively, either via claims made against highly regarded individuals or against national competitions and even the AB's. Logic of course plays no part in this, as NZ utterly dominates Super Rugby, The Rugby Championship & its previous incarnation The Tri Nations and is far & away the most successful international team in history, historically & currently dominating their NH opposition. Cullen was a phenomenal defender, had a powerful fend, strong boot (almost never needed it) and a sharp eye for support and defensive positioning. The only thing that ever let Cullen down was one of his knees and John Mitchell.

Hehe! Some salty kiwis popping up 😂 Nobody is going to say anything other than that Christian Cullen was one of the best full backs of all time... but he got mullered there.
