Even though we use to hear claims, that Christian was a bust I think he wasn't. Yes, maybe he didn't reach a superstar level but for YEARS he was one a main guys for his teams. From Minnesota, to Hawks and Wizards. He was an All-Star once. So... is he really a bust?! ;)

The fact that he was in the DreamTeam and became an all star. Thats already a great achievement.

It seems like if you're a white American guy in the NBA you either have to be an MVP like Larry Bird or set career records like John Stockton in order for people to say you're good, this guy was an all star several times and was usually the best player on whatever team he played for including a team that made to the second round of the playoffs and people still have the nerve to call him a bust.

Loser ... loser ... loser ... winner! That story that led to this quote is still interesting. Laettner was an incredible college baller, but wasn't playing for great NBA organisations in his prime. He had the footwork, the shooting touch, but was a liability on defense. If he played today, Mr. Laettner could has been a star.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. Being tall for a Japanese-American (5'10"), in church league pickup games, played with other Japanese people, I tried to be Christian Laettner-like with my game.

He had a solid career, he certainly wasn't a bust but when you're a white guy, you aren't allowed to not live up to over expectations. If he had been on a championship team it might have helped his legacy but he was never in the right situation. His knees started giving out on him around mid career or so and he switched from PF to the center position, without his mobility he basically became a jump shooter on offense but always gave you solid effort on D and on the boards. I think people remember him more for his later career as a less than mobile post but he did some pretty amazing stuff for a guy his size in his earlier years. So yeah, a good player but not great one, nothing to be ashamed of.

I watched him quite a bit in the pros and never considered him a bad player, certainly not a bust. He was really good in Atlanta and then his game slowed down and he was limited to the low post really. My only real critique was he would make really good plays and nice shots, but would be kinda passive and at the end of the game he would have only scored in the teens and would be like, "Hm. I thought he had a better game than that." I saw him score over 30 when he was with the Hawks and it didn't look too difficult for him (even in the NBA he made a lot of shots look easy) and I would wonder why he didn't assert himself more often. Shortly after his time in Atlanta with the Pistons he was not nearly as dynamic or athletic. I don't recall any injuries he had, but it was as if his legs were already in their late 30s when he was in his late 20s. I think he would have been even better in today's league.

How do you think Christian Laettner would have done on those contending Sonics teams from 1993-1997, and those competitive Blazers teams from 1999-2000? He may have been an excellent third or fourth wheel, for those teams. Those are my two favorite teams. I am Japanese-American, born in 1973, and grew up in Seattle.

that would have been interesting. also, may favorite scenario is if he played with those jazz teams that challenged the bulls. what could have happened? those jazz teams didnt have a legitimate 2nd scoring option. and in his prime, laettner was good for 18, 8 and 4..
