In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Tristan & Isolde this production was premiered on 25 July 2015 and marked the high-point of last year’s Bayreuth Festival.
An important and highly-anticipated new production of Wagner's take on this ultimate, immortal tale of love and longing by the composer's great-granddaughter Katharina Wagner. Enjoy some of today's most prominent vocalists and Christian Thielemann, arguably the most important Wagner conductor of our day and age, on the first installment of an exclusive, multiyear partnership between Deutsche Grammophon and the Bayreuth Festival, in which the Yellow Label becomes the exclusive audiovisual partner of the mythical Wagner festival.

Richard Wagner a major German composer besides Beethoven who were deeply influenced by India’s Vedic philosophy like most German intellectuals of 19th century. Wagner was an Indologist who has written extensively about the connection between Germany and India in his prose works and has interpreted the philosophy in his works such as Lohengrin, Tristan, Parsifal and his epic opera Ring of the Nibelungs not to mention Wagner’s own brother in law was a well known professor of Sanskrit at Leipzig University.

I think that Herr Thielemann might want to read what Wagner wrote about Tristan und Isolde, and then read Bryan Magee's "Wagner and Philosophy", and then Roger Scruton's book "Death-devoted Heart", and then he might change his mind about Tristan und Isolde. It is _not_ a tragedy! Any fool could tell you that from the radiant music with which closes! This is about redemption, salvation, etc; it is musical metaphysics.

Michael Lee. I have always thought it unfortunate that such a remarkable conductor of opera like Thielemann should have his career coincide with complete decadence and stupidity in stage direction. I’ m sure he would have made different decisions without Ms. Wagner, despite her surname.

I think there got something lost in translation. I, as a German, hear a fine but clearly recognizable irony in this part of the interview. They both are Wagnerians to their bones. But sometimes you have to make one or two jokes even at the cost of the Meister. It is just a another way of worship. ;-)

I think what you see between these men is a very distinctly German form of polite conversation. In Germany, to be slightly restrained and quite formal is traditionally thought to be considerate and polite. Humour, if there is any, is often very understated and quite sarcastic.
