Christiane Amanpour reflects on her experiences as a war correspondent highlighting her commitment to truth-telling and accountability. She discusses the treatment of female reporters on the front lines and advocates for gender equality in journalism. Amanpour also shares her personal journey of delaying marriage and family to prioritize her profession, and stresses the ongoing challenges women face globally.
Christiane Amanpour was born on January 12, 1958, in London, England. The daughter of an English mother and Iranian father and the oldest of four sisters, she spent time in Tehran, Iran, while growing up. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor of arts in journalism. Amanpour is CNN’s chief international correspondent and anchor of Amanpour, a nightly foreign affairs program on CNN International. In addition, she is the global affairs anchor for ABC News, providing international analysis of important issues of the day for ABC News programs and platforms, and anchoring primetime documentaries on international subjects. Amanpour began her career as a journalist at CNN in 1983 as an entry-level assistant on the network’s international assignment desk in Atlanta. She worked her way up to correspondent in CNN’s New York bureau before becoming an international correspondent in 1990. During her combined tenures at CNN and ABC News, she has interviewed most of the world’s top leaders, including Iranian Presidents Mohammad Khatami and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the presidents of Afghanistan and Sudan, Prime Ministers of Israel and Presidents of the Palestinian Authority, and Moammar Gadhafi and Hosni Mubarak during the Arab Spring. After the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, Amanpour was the first international correspondent to interview British Prime Minister Tony Blair, French President Jacques Chirac, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai. From 1998 to 2018, Amanpour was married to American James Rubin, a former US Assistant Secretary of State and spokesman for the US State Department during the Clinton administration. They had one son in 2000, Darius John Rubin. Amanpour has earned every major television journalism award including an inaugural Television Academy Honor, nine News and Documentary Emmy® Awards, four George Foster Peabody Awards, two George Polk Awards, three duPont-Columbia Awards, the Courage in Journalism Award, an Edward R. Murrow award, and a Giants of Broadcasting honor from the Library of American Broadcasting.
From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.

Interview took place May 9, 2011 It seems incredible this channel has not done another update Interview with Christiane Amanpour. This Interview is 13 years old!!! Christine warrants the Respect to have the last 13 years of her life to share with us…if she so wishes. By this I mean, in particular her voice and career up to now April 2024. For instance her awesome Program on PBS…and so much more. From the first time I heard and saw Christiane reporting live in a ‘conflict area’, her strength and fearlessness was evident. Her resolve to stand up for Truth… she is Principled… a woman of Substance. Thank you for all you do to help make this world a better place. We are blessed and grateful for your service to mankind…. for your Light and Wisdom.🌟

I am a huge fan of this journalist, but I wonder how she sees the current conflict and the response by the Israeli government. I took believe journalist need to take moral stands when presenting what is happening. Great journalist, great interview and surely must be an inspiration to other women. Thank you for this presentation. I believe women have a greater role to play in establishing a more peaceful world. I like many women join, led, and participated in the southern civil rights movement, yet we are rarely given the recognition we deserve. Thank you for this interview.

I love and always loved watching Christiane Amanpour. I immediately, even as a child seeing her reports on CNN, trusted her. I'm just some southern kid in the US and gay, which had an impact in looking for a feminine strength. She has been so impressive, strong, intelligent but also very grounded. I wasn't afraid hearing her tell us what was happening then and now. She doesn't insult the audience's intelligence. She reports in a way that even as a young man, intrigued me. She made us want to be aware of what was happening in the world.

I deeply love this woman. She is beyond feminism and is better than most men in her ethics and her willingness to seek the truth. She doesn't waste time playing games. Survival is more important to her than "beauty". I'm concerned about her cancer. I send her healing and remind her that she is the most important person in her life always and most importantly NOW. Take care of yourself.

(Pancha Chandra): Journalism is a challenging profession especially when telling the truth is the main aim. Yes, ethical journalism certainly keeps us on the straight and narrow; we question politicians when they follow unwise policies! The Truth is our guiding star! Christiane Amanpour is a wonderful role model!

Christians is truly a breath of fresh air. Not only do I have a great respect for her, she demands respect. She has rightfully earned it. I wish I could say the same about some women who hold positions not because they deserve it but just because they are women. That is not good for any one concerned.

She wrote that we can live without sex but not without touch. Yeah earlier today I was watching a woman hold her husbands arm and another with her arm on his shoulder . I reflected how it has been about a decade since my wife essentially retired from being a wife. No contact since then. Almost no talking is lately. I initiate all conversation and get little response back. I do outstanding amazing things that should illicit some positive response. Nope. So few women today know how to return love.

I don't like her. She is a propagandist, and she acts like she isn't one, and she chose career over family. I don't care what feminists say. That leads to unhappiness for a woman. She has no idea what life is about and how the world works. A silly woman held up to confuse other women...
