Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 51K miles*

Hey Christian. Another great vid. I commented recently on my love for a river/creek and a beautiful sunset , outweighing my need to be with people. The hermit in me. This video, you gave me all that. The little river, that waterfall wall, that entire park, with all the Autumn colours, was a zone I would be at complete peace in. And those sunsets. Bliss. Thank you for once again, showing me such a beautiful world we live in. Cheers, Rob,Tasmania, Australia

That scenery is absolutely awe inspiring. It left me speechless. The only thing I can say is I don’t think you’ll ever regret spending more time in places like this, especially when you’re older and moving a bit slower :) But I understand that struggle of balancing your work and being in places you love on the road. It's the ephemeral and the seemingly immortal and monumental. The unique fleeting moments that can never be repeated against the backdrop of something that only morphs slowly over millenia. Such beautiful contrast. Pressures of tedium pale into insignifigance, we'll have no regrets on our deathbeds for neglecting them whenever we can. It's these moments.

You definitely won't see the parks nearly as much once you have a stationary home. We all fall into habits commensurate with our environment. However, you'll do stationary home life in a way that suits you, and there are many benefits to that dynamic you'll appreciate. And if you ever have the bug to hit the road, you can always venture out again (unless you have kids).

I have to say, you're shot selection, choice of music, edits, the ability to hold on a shot and actually let it breath along with your storytelling... It's pretty amazing, no lie. The guitar modes are what I call the keys to the universe. Still tricky to even find a full fretboard image with the mode shapes, but once I could pick up a guitar and play the modes up and down the neck with close to no mistakes in whatever progression then the purposefulness that comes through even with experimental tones is encouraging.

Loved this video. I completely understand that feeling of being in those special moments like that. While we didn’t live the van lifestyle we lived in a very small house and traveled frequently with our kids since we homeschooled and we were able to do so with my husbands job. But somewhere along the way my kids craved stability and land and animals so we settled down into a completely new area. However, our lifestyle now does not afford those same travel options but we live in the mountains so we have outdoor access at our fingers tips. Which I am extremely great for. But I miss traveling like we used too. Being able to stay somewhere longer if we wanted leave if we wanted to as well. And then come home to my bed and my kitchen. I think I was born a bit of a gypsy myself. All of this to say that it’s entirely possible to have a home and still travel depending on your lifestyle and I plan to do it again once we are out of this phase of life!!

I'm just in awe of what you captured in Zion with the imagery and angles. I need to add this area to my list of "gotta visit and see this." And if you ever want it, there is a future in music gigs for you. That is no beginner level you shared. Us musicians are always striving to achieve that next level of proficiency. Keep it up.

Christian, as always, thank you for sharing your stories and travels with us. I truly believe you to be one of the most talented nature videographers alive today. In fact, I put you right up there with the likes of Ansel Adams (if he had gotten his hands of a video camera). I also travel quite a bit in a Ram Promaster class B van and love it. With my two dogs as company, I have logged 40k miles over the last 18 months. Perhaps we will cross paths someday! Thank you once again for your invaluable contributions and for being an inspiration to fellow travelers and nature enthusiasts alike.

I used to mountain bike in those tunnels back in the early 90s. I miss the moods and colors of the terrain there. Every time you look it changes. But every year you come back it’s a familiar friend

As a professional guitar player of 30 years experience, I’d just like to say, you are already well on your way as a guitarist, just keep playing and let the magic reveal itself naturally. You’re already really good, in a year from now you will be even more amazing! I’m a touring musician and part time van-lifer who is teaching myself the fiddle, so I feel your proximity issues to other people! I have them too…all part of learning something new! All the best from Aus, love yer work!

The outdoors and nature are very peaceful. You could get a lot done in that environment, writing, thinking, relaxing, training, meditating, so much. Going to small towns or cities at times could allow you to recharge when you visit people and get that connection. Nice to have many choices.....

What a beautiful piece of art. You captured the light, the details better than most, if not all. You make me want to be 30 again, with a van. Your decision was the right one. Love the tennis shoes. I was there last may and it was much different. Dryer and warmer. Got to Crater lake a few days later and got snowed in...I love travel... Be well, stay safe.

Zion is one of my top five places on Earth, and it is why I based much of my novel on this area. In fact, I love it so much, that I lived for a while in St. George, so that I could visit the park often. I was almost swept over a cliff during a flash flood and am happy to have survived my many adventures within its boundaries. Thank you, Christian, for showing this great land at its best...

I traveled for about 8 years, just like you. It was mostly camping, hitchhiking, or cycling. And only in the last year, I had a minivan. By the fifth year, it seemed like I didn't want to hear anything about travel from other people anymore. I didn't feel like watching travel videos on KZfaq like I used to. And in the eighth year, I settled down in a house. For two years. I still didn't want to hear anything about travel. Sometimes I would go out into nature when I had the opportunity and enjoyed it because I missed it a lot. But after two years in the city, I felt a craving for travel. That's when I found you. Now I'm on the road again. But temporarily. It's more of a break from the city than a new phase of life. I envy you a little and your ability to live on the road, but just a little, because I know what you feel and what you want. I think all travelers who have experienced something similar share similar feelings. In reality, there are very few people like that. Few who can truly understand you. And I'm glad to see you because I think you're one of the few who could understand my stories, my feelings, and my thoughts.

Christian, it took me maybe an hour to get through your video. The first time through I just took it all in, and listened to your lovely thoughts. The second time through I paused it on every new frame and tried to take in all the details. The third time through I put on Pavarotti and just try to feel the moment emotionally. Then I went back and kept replaying each dynamic sequence (mostly driving shots) until I felt full, and went on to the next. They say the universe is made up of vibrating energy. To me that means the universe is music -- it is a symphony. How can we describe the deep red in a rose, except through vibration. I went back and watched what I wanted in complete external silence, with ear muffs. I looked at what you had "captured" and I tried to listen to the symphony going on inside my head that it had invoked, and I heard it! What a great and glorious day this has been. THANK YOU!

Many of your images remind me of the light captured in “Yosemite and the Range of Light”, by Ansel Adams. Your opening image is sensational. Good choice staying at Zion. Your narration is rich, and your overall image selections are solid. We know you’re a pro, but this, especially being around Zion, was another notch up. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful, meaningful chapter in your adventure.
