Күн бұрынAs of January 2024, I’ve been living on the road full-time for five and a half years as a photographer and filmmaker. First in an SUV, and now this van. Here’s a tour of my current tiny home on wheels after four years of living in it full-time, including a complete rebuild of the lower half after a disastrous water leak that destroyed my original build. Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. After 14 months of SUV living - I bought the van I now call home. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world, while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

Every time I look at you when you talk about the van or this lifestyle, your eyes light up and I can see that you absolutely enjoy the freedom it gives you and all of the adventures and memories encountered along the way. There are definitely improvements that came with the rebuild, so you managed to transform a bad thing that happened to you into a great one. I'm happy for you! Take care, be safe and always have fun. You're right, Christian. It didn't appear all that different from your original build, until you shared all the changes. It's really quite stunning and ultra functional. Plus, we share the same sense of 'tickety boo-ness,' and it was pleasing to the eye which appreciates order. Happy trails in 2024~Cass P.S. I'm not a van lifer, but I vicariously am😉

Christian you may have thought of this but you can get really inexpensive water sensors that you could place in multiple locations in the van around your plumbing to maker sure that if another leak occurs you will find out really quick.

As someone that traveled the world for six years with a backpack full of rock climbing and camping gear I can completely appreciate this. Currently about to start a Land Rover discovery camper build and very inspiring to watch your van rebuild tour as someone that follows your awesome channel.

Stay away from the LR Discovery - they look nice and have some nice features, but they have far too many electronics in them to be reliable for the long term. If you plan on going into remote isolated areas - i strongly recommend a Toyota Landcruiser/Prado. Reliability is the only thing that matters when going remote or rough.

@@David-cq4se ah, but life is about way more than just reliability and I've grown rather fond of this Discovery, despite it's leaky sunroof and a few other minor things. If I was going to do another round the world trip I would look at a Defender at very least, but in this case the Discovery makes for a nice daily driver and travel van.

I loved how much in detail you described how lowering cabinets created extra space (even extra drawer). Love it. Most of us live in a house and half of the stuff inside cabinets is old stuff we never use. Great videos, let's us imagine for a second that we can leave everything like that and live on a road like you and see all that beauty.

@5:30 Pro tip: the 1lb propane canisters can be easily refilled from your larger tank! It's really easy and a game changer. One $10 part and a simple technique.

it's the amount of space they take is the problem also sometimes hard to find a fill station.

what is the technique? Im really keen to try this, I use the small canisters as their flame is way better than a cheap camping stove plugged into the larger canister. Thanks!

I really like your rebuild Christian. I can't believe how much storage you have! The light colors are great for creating a roomier look also. I'm surprised at how many van lifers spend sooo much time driving. I think even though I enjoy driving, I wouldn't want to be pushing forward all the time. Seems stressful to me. Expensive too. I hope you are happy in your new build.❤

When I get my van ready to travel this is the daily limit I'm thinking. Even if going a long distance, find somewhere to stop for the day after 4 hours or so driving. Sure, I can drive 12+ hours at a stretch, but I can also move slower and experience more, and take time to enjoy it.

Lots of upgrades! One looked into a momad’s van and my comment was, “You have a lot of stuff.” Well, that came back to me when we moved and a professional mover to me the same thing after it took four guys all day to empty that load. I didn’t tell him we had more! Be safe out there and have fun. 🤩

I love the layout - especially the back bench / day bed / half of the full bed - and table combo. Genius. I would absolutely would have the back doors open as much as I could and hang out with a book, movie, or whatever. You are so organized and I love your approach to maximize space, like rolling clothes. The color scheme and materials are lovely. Great job!

That's an incredible rebuild! I honestly think that if I had to choose any van to live in myself, of all the vanlifers whose rigs I've seen here on KZfaq, I'd choose yours. So comfy, pretty, and completely practical. Lots of storage too! You are also the most skilled photographer and storyteller out there. It's such a pleasure to watch whatever you do. Love this!! 😍 My husband and I just tried vanlife for a week (Nevada, Arizona, and Utah) in a Ram Pro Master City, but not the tall version. I'm 5' 10" so I appreciate the comments about bed size. 😅 Such a nice build. I love watching your content with all the beautiful views! 🌄

I really enjoyed it! I would have had a different layout if I lived in it and we cheated on the van for a shower/laundry at a hotel. Haha. If it had been warm I'd have been down for the hanging shower bag situation like you mentioned or if we were actually full time I would look into a gym membership. Overall it was a fun experience to be able to see lots of places in a small amount of time! We stayed at National Park campgrounds, so the bathroom situation was great! 😁💖

Christian, I follow quite a few van life folks. But when I see that you posted a video I have to watch it immediately. Bravo... Bravo to the van rebuild. What a great job you and your friend did , it is so well thought out. And your presentation of it as absolutely fantastic, you maximized my enjoyment...lol. I am already researching the composting toilet. I did my first van build in the early 70s, it was a 1964 Chevy van....I wish I still had it... I’m not sure I could do it, but this really inspired me to look more into the lifestyle itself. To get out there more and enjoy locations and environments more than I do. I felt so at ease watching you explain the upgrades and your process. Always enjoyable, and this one has some extra awesome sprinkled on it. Thank you.

What a beautiful and thoughtful upgrade! Well done and cheers to slow travel. I’d give anything to do this type of life for a while, but missed my chance, as so many of us do while grinding the corporate gig. After 45 years, finally retired last year. Have young grandchildren so enjoying the heck out of them. We are all blessed in different ways and then we come together on these sites and get to enjoy life through your eyes, so thankful for that.
