As someone who travels often for work, my trick to refine my packing has been : I make a list *after* my trip noting what I wore and what items just made a round-trip in my suitcase; also a list of what I wish I had brought. So I get a little better each time.

I'm not going anywhere, but this was a useful video for those who do carry-on only. Personally, I like to check my one large suitcase because I don't have to worry about packing light (but I do keep the weight limit in mind) and it allows me more room to bring home anything I acquire while away. Not only that, but when I travel, I always have to catch a connecting flight, and I usually have a long wait in between, so I appreciate the fact that only having a small crossbody bag with my passport and essentials makes it more comfortable for me while wandering around the airport, in and out of shops, restaurants, etc, than lugging a suitcase around with me, everywhere I go, including the bathroom! To me, it's well worth the extra cost of checking in my bag. ✈️

Same. For me, packing in the slightly larger suitcase allows me to better organize things. And then its so much easier to find stuff. Anytime I try too hard to get in the true carry on size (20in of pack space + 2 inches for 4 spinner wheels), I am just cramming stuff in like a game of tetris.

I have extensive arthritis (since age 18) and fibromyalgia so I pack a medium bag which I check and a largish personal item where I put all of my meds for the trip. I can’t handle a carry on. Since all in-country flights I take allow me to check two bags for free, it’s a non-issue.

Nice video. Very thoughtful and I have a few things to add. I always buy shampoo, conditioner, hand soap at my destination. Skip the umbrellas that are useless in the wind and invest in a good rain hat that functions for warmth, rain and sun protection. Wear sneakers or hiking boots on the plane; pack only Teva or similar rain and cushion friendly shoes. For summer trips to Ireland or Scandinavian, wear heavy-duty rain coat over a lightweight warm pullover or zip jacket and pack the thinner layers. A poly fleece jacket and/or vest is light weight. Blue jeans may be too heavy. Avoid cotton and other layers that are heavy and less likely to dry overnight without heat. Quick dry pants work well, even better if they zip off to shorts. Wear one pair while the other pair is drying in your room. A polyester crepe skirt could be versatile. Bring a few laundry soap sheets like Tru Earth to tear off a piece and watch an item in your room sink. If your garments are interchangeable solids, a few printed silk scarves can change the look of an outfit. A scarf inside your raincoat catches the drips before they run down your back. Remember sunglasses. Bring old prescription glasses in case you lose them. Sweat or yoga pants instead of pyjamas so you can wear them to breakfast at your B&B; also good as a swimsuit coverup garment. Pack everything in water resistant packing cubes if you will do any travel on a ferry or other vehicle where they may set your cases out on deck or anywhere they may get rained on. Electricity is expensive in Europe and if you have someone do your laundry for you, do not be surprised if you get it back damp, especially if you have heavy cottons like blue jeans. If you fly on a DC-10, sometimes there are no overhead compartments for people in the middle 5 seats and your bigger carry-on will may checked at the gate or on the ramp; pack all medication, jewelry, camera/phone/electronics and one small outfit in your smaller carry-on that fits under the seat. I like to put a copy of my passport with my home and your destination contacts (hotel, B&B with dates) information in each piece of luggage and my purse in case anything gets misplaced at the airport or in a taxi or bus. BTW, remember that the US REAL ID requirement has been extended to May 7, 2025. Remember to pack electric outlet adapters if traveling outside the US. Check if your phone will work in your destinations and check if you will have Internet access. Check texting charges. It may be cheaper to communicate with your friends via email or Facebook Message, etc than to pay the phone rates for out of country texting. It may make more sense to get a local SIM card or pay-as-you-go phone at your destination airport. Check availability of ATMs at your destinations. Some countries may have limited access to ATMs and you may have to get cash at the airport. Remember to notify your bank of the dates you will be traveling in which countries in order to avoid your bank stopping "suspicious charges" on your accounts. Similarly B&Bs and other seasonal merchants may not be able to afford year-round fees for credit card machines and they may require cash instead of credit card payment. Check ahead. Don't count on anyone to cash checks (don't even pack them). If you plan to buy things on your travels, consider leaving home with your oldest clothes that you can discard after wearing on your trip. That makes space in your suitcase for your purchases . That's my experience. I hope it helps. Packing gets easier with every trip. Take notes and build on your own experiences.

to be honest. If you produce at cost and remove the logo, the luxury market really isn't that expensive. The mark is about 80% of the actual price. But the fact that you are *hotdups* buying an image and showing off your taste to make them think you are richer than you are is a very good thing to do

I used to travel a lot for work and truly became a master of packing a carry on and traveling light. Then I had a baby… and, well, carry on life is out the window now but whenever I travel alone I am carry-on only, all the way!

Our whole family spent three weeks in Japan in December 2023 each with a small carry-on only based on careful planning. It was so good for travelling on all the trains! Within New Zealand there is often a strictly enforced 7kg limit for carry-on which is super difficult 😬. Most KZfaq carry-on videos wouldn't meet that restriction.

I'm 37 years old and I already have a *hotdups* black Birkin bag, which was the first good choice I ever made. I can afford a Kelly bag in any color. If I were 25, I'd probably buy it. But now I consciously don't want to associate with a woman who has a Kelly and a Birkin. I have no interest in spending $40k on a bag (a piece of leather + labor = up to $1000) Imagine spending $39k on this brand. Totally unnecessary.

I hate the fight for the overhead bins. I am a non conflict person and the anxiety of getting in line ASAP to fight for bin space is too much. Some people are just A-Holes and move your bags away so they can put there's in. Now I intentionally board with group 7 (or whatever is last) and just walk to my seat. I have airline credit cards, which give me free checked bags. An airtag lets you know the location of the bag. I know my bag is at the destination airport. I find my 24inch bag (not including wheels) can comfortably handle a weeks worth of clothes (warm climate) and is easily under 35 pounds. If my trip is longer than 5-6 nights, I plan to do laundry. I only go "carry on size" when: 1) I know I can fit everything I need in the small suitcase. I am not a fan of the carry-on suitcase + giant stuffed backpack/purse. At that point a larger suitcase is more efficient to organize and find you things. 2) I am going to a large metro area where having a really light weight suitcase makes life easier (looking at you NYC!).

I totally hear you. I see almost everyone coming on airplanes with their roller bag and personal item. Very few people are showing up at the gate with just a personal item anymore and you know they are going to be calling for people to "volunteer" to check one of their carry-ons. I drives me nuts when I see a roller bag, really big backpack (like the kind you'd take on a backpack holiday-not a city pack) and another personal item and they sail right past the flight attendant and then I get randomly selected to gate check my bag! Sometimes I am tempted to go back to a checked bag. But...if am going to be moving around a lot on my holiday, especially if you are leaving your destination airport immediately and can't wait for delayed luggage, then carry on is the only way. But taking carry-on has become more stressful in the last couple of years. The fiasco a couple of summers ago with the huge piles of lost luggage at airports and storage facilities has caused a lot of people to go with carry-on, understandably. But for those of us who have been flying with carry on for years and now face the possibility of having your bag randomly gate checked, its anxiety inducing for sure.

i love my Monos bags. I have the carry-on (I fly a lot on smaller planes with short haul flights and airlines are very stingy with size) and recently picked up the carry on plus to give me a bit more breathing room for longer holidays. I have been carry on only for years. With more people going carry on and sometimes sneaking their personal item in the overhead bin (your personal item is supposed to go under the seat in front of you, people!) sometimes full flights have been stressful with being randomly selected to gate check my bag, and I am reminded how much I hate waiting for my luggage at the carrousel.

I would love to see a carry-on only for 2 weeks for fall/winter. Packing bulky items is always more difficult (even more so when you are larger sized), especially if you need to pack for multiple types of excursion (casual, clubs, hiking/ outdoor activities, etc). This isn't a comment about this video but in general I see most people put out videos about packing for Europe in summer when it's obviously easier to pack when everything is just smaller overall.

✈️Excellent timing on such an informative video, Christina. We’re traveling from Edmonton to Thunder Bay to celebrate our son becoming a paramedic. Thanks for the reminder that I can pack light and still have everything I need… I’ll just go and remove half of what I have laid out now. 🙃

I just came back from a two week trip to Italy, Greece, and Croatia which included a cruise. A friend had just come back from a similar trip, and she checked her bag. It never caught up to her on her trip. Since we were going to be on the move, I packed a stylish backpack. Because this was the only bag I was bringing, I had to be very strategic and, I used the 5-4-3-2-1 formula and it was perfect. And yes, I did bring washable items that dried overnight. I watched people struggling with large rolling bags on the trains in Italy and I’m sorry to say I did feel a bit smug😊

Great advice! The last time I travelled abroad I did carry on only and loved it. I will visit my family in Germany for 2 weeks this summer, I plan on doing the same thing. It's a little easier, when you stay with someone who has a washing machine of course. In general I overpack, but I will try hard to only bring essentials.

Thank you for the reminder that less is more lol. I'm not going by plane but we are headed to the beach about an hour from me for a week and I'm attempting to pack in weekender bag and a small backpack vs the duffle bag I usually use. We end up lugging a lot more things for kids so I'm trying to cut corners anywhere I can. We do have access to a washer and dryer as well.

✈I love packing videos! Totally agree that it gets easier and lighter each time. I'd only pack a large roller bag like this if I was traveling somewhere really fancy (Like my Vegas wedding later this year). I much prefer just my small backpack and my fanny pack for casual travel. Fewer toiletries and less tech are my two biggest changes for getting my packing super light.

Traveling next to Latvia in July. We travel sometimes with 1 personal item only (small backpack only). In that case, I bring only one pair of shoes and buy hair care in the airport or at the destination. Travelling light is awesome and can be achievable by planning ahead so your pieces all mix and match. I usually have fun planning my travel capsule wardrobe!!

Good tips. I take fewer undies and hand wash. I use the ‘bundle’ method for fewer wrinkles, and skip jeans because they are bulky and heavy when compared to dress pants. Weight is more of my issue since I’m short and hefting the bag over my head is getting harder as I get older. Thankfully there is usually someone taller wanting to get by me on the plane that will help.

For our vacation this year, I'm challenging myself to go with just a carry-on & personal bag. Oh & toiletries, We've done this since 2007 & it works every time... We wait with the shampoo, conditioner & body wash until we get where we're going, then find a CVS/Walgreens, or someplace like that & get the full-size bottles, we both share them, then when we're ready to leave to come back home the bottles are empty or really close to it, so we toss them in the garbage on our way out the door.

I have a trip to Florida coming up in a couple of months, and while I have a general idea of what I want to bring, the next step is for me to condense that in carry-on only luggage. Note that if you traveling somewhere tropical and very heated, you shouldn`t probably put in your carry on your favourite or very expensive tops, especially if they are ligt colored. You will sweat a lot in a hot tropical weather and your body would also probaly covered in sunscreen. And that mix of sunscreen and sweat sometimes can make yellowish spots and soak the yellowness into the fabric. And those yellow spots are not easy to wash off, some of my clothes was ruined after Thailand and Tanzania. So now I only take with me the tops that I don’t mind getting ruined because getting really sweaty and using sunscreen in many tropical countries is inevitable.

Modt airlines noe specify 1 bag as cary on no personal item and weight must be 7 or 8 kg when packed. That gives little room to manoevre but will try to go with that and wear heaviest stuff.. as winter summer packing much harder.

Great video, I too always only travel with carry on, although some uk and European airlines definitely have a smaller size allowance than yours. I’m off to Australia for 3 weeks in August to compete in the World Surfboat championships and I will definitely just bring hand luggage. So much easier, and quicker to get out of the airport too 🤩. Thanks for a great video and have a fantastic trip xx

I think it totally depends on where you are going, how long time you will be away and what you are going to do when you get there! A long weekend in London I will have just a carry-on with my things but sometimes put in my big suitcase. It depends on if we are going shopping or just looking at musicals & going to museums and stand-up places. A three week vacation in Thailand is easy to pack in a carry-on but a three week vacation to South America with both sunbathing, hiking in the mountains where it is cold and visiting big cities is a totally different thing. Then you need a big suitcase as just hikingboots and warmer cloths takes up a lot of space!

I go to France several times a year. I'm carry-on only going to France. Coming home, I check my rolling carry-on so I can use a tote and my personal item on the trip home. I usually buy gifts in the Paris airport in the duty-free shops. My family and friends have enough stuff, so they want foodie items that US Customs allows! For example, Ladurée macarons, salted caramel, Kusmi or Mariage teas, etc.
