Today I'm chatting about what I learned after getting rid of over 60% of my clothes. I used to rely on collecting clothing and constantly shopped to stay "on trend", but realized that most of those trends weren't really for me at all. Nowadays I'm embracing a "less is more" philosophy when it comes to my wardrobe, and I've started to really figure out what my style is and what I no longer need to buy for my closet.
What are some pieces of clothing you no longer buy?

Once I started decluttering, I realized that many of us weren’t taught HOW to build a wardrobe for long term. I mean I get why, since our wardrobes for the first 12-18 yrs of our lives are disposable since we grow out of what we wear, but the underlying themes of basics and staples (for me) were completely missing. I think that’s why I always bought from a place of scarcity. If I had built a closet filled with high quality basics first, and figured out what my staples were, I don’t feel like I would’ve purchased as much. When you don’t have lots of pieces that actually pair well together, then it certainly does feel like you have gaps, probably because you do. But that would be easily fixed by building a solid foundation of basics and staples first.

Mandy, I think that is sooo true! And I want to add: I wish we would have been taught a lot of useful things like how to read a contract, how to apply for a job, what insurances to get or how to invest. Or just how to plug eyebrows. 😅🙈 I want to write a book: „What you need to know when you grow up“. Then I will include all the useful information you will need as a young adult. 🤩

Absolutely! But even knowing that you need to build a wardrobe on a foundation of staple pieces, it still takes time to learn which staples suit your lifestyle, colors and fits that suit your body shape and coloring, not to mention your own personal aesthetic. It's a journey!

Alot of the need for De-Cluttering is that we haven't been taught to Plan Ahead & Chose Wisely about ANYTHING! Seeing something someone else has & think "I should have that, too"! Then it doesn't fit OUR Life Style! Bummer! "I spent all that money on this but I don't Use it, Enjoy It, or Love it! 😟 So Now What??

I used to anxiety purge, then I realised it was the panic of seeing a cluttered wardrobe full of things I couldn't even remember buying. So now I spend time just looking over my wardrobe everyday when I wake up. I've gotten to know my wardrobe better and reduced impulse buying coz I'm reminded everyday of what I already have.

When it comes to basics I like to have duplicates that are exactly the same. I live in black skinny jeans outside and black mid rise leggings inside. Therefore I bought two of the same kind before the company decides to discontinue my favorite. Same thing with bras: If I tested one and like it, I will buy a duplicate. Many times I thought that I will buy a new item when the "old" one is falling apart, but then it is no longer available and the brand only has a version with a different fit, cut or material that I don't like as much.

I did that with nude bras I found at a big name supermarket/grocery store for £4, because as a black person that's like finding a unicorn at that price. 4 years later can't find those bras in store. I need to do the same with clothes, but I'm weird in the sense that I like my wardrobe to feel like a museum so I think I want only one so it's "special", I should probably look into which ones it makes sense to duplicate. Re-shopping is very tedious.

Something that I am doing is printing pictures from Pinterest with similar items I have in my wardrobe and challenging myself to wear the items I never reach for so I can figure out why. I’ve learned: 1) I don’t like button-ups on me, 2) I don’t like shirts with collars, and 3) I very much reach for oversized tops and fitted bottoms and never looser bottoms and more fitted tops. I didn't learn too much about myself through decluttering my wardrobe, at first. But when I started decluttering my books? Wow. That was revealing. So many of my books were there to impress others. My keep-it-or-lose-it decision was based around a two-tier question: a) will I re-read it? If yes, will I be just as happy with it as an ebook? If yes, get the ebook and declutter the hard copy. If no, why not? b) If I'm not sure if I would re-read a book, am I inclined to keep it because it's meaningful to me / sparks joy just knowing that it's there on my shelf? Or, more often that I was happy to admit, am I keeping this book for bragging rights? What's so crazy about all this, is that my book case is in my bedroom, so very few people ever saw my books. But so many were there to show that I was "well read", had "intelligent" books, they were there to prove that I was "cultured" and "smart" = sophisticated. Which begged the question: just who is it I'm trying to impress? I eventually ended up going through a similar journey with my clothes. Decluttering was far more difficult and cathartic than I'd been prepared for. But what a relief to understand myself better and so gift myself the opportunity to grow. Thank you for talking so opening about your own experience! I don't have anyone IRL walking this path.

The light bulb in my head (life) has finally gone on! I have spent waaayyyy too much on "curating" the perfect wardrobe. The result? Needless DEBT, piles of clothes everywhere (many unworn, with tags) and guilt/regret. I remembered a message in one if your recent videos...I wasn't ready to hear it then...but I AM now. Guilt, shame, debt...I am so ready to learn from you!!!! Thank you in advance for the being the beacon through the fog. Thankyou . I buy duplicates of things I like - I have 3 Bardot tops in different colours. Like you I have and wear alot of "work" clothes. I do dress up to go shopping, eat out , go out for the day, on holiday - so alot of my wardrobe is only worn occasionally and I definitely have favourites. I do wrestle with my inner " Golem" , my crazy alter ego that loves to shop, loves fashion, loves to say "f*CK it buy it" , so I try to pause and reflect if I need or have genuine use for an item. But I also have to not constrain myself too much otherwise my Golem can rebel badly to rules- so it's a delicate balance. Watching your videos helps me with that balance. X

While decluttering is definitely not a bad thing - and I certainly have more clothes than I need myself now is not the time to get rid of things that can be worn. We are seeing shortages of dry goods, appliances and furniture and even sometimes certain food items. Inflation and fuel prices are something we have have to pay attention to and supply chain situations are having a visible affect in many places. If the political climate worsens abroad- many many items will be very expensive if we can get them at all. I totally understand how wonderful the feeling of decluttering is, and minimalism is in no way a bad thing 😊 but wait until life normalizes before getting rid of things we simply don’t want. Carefully store what is not being used, mend anything that is wearable, carefully clean and store everything. Instead of going to the store we can look in our closets to freshen things up. One thing is for certain we most likely will not be able to replace clothes as easily as before. In addition it is certainly better for the environment. But the most important thing is to enjoy life and the things we have. I was so busy making my point I forgot to add that I loved your perspective on wardrobe and guilt. Especially feeling guilty. I would love to see part 2 and maybe a few thoughts on the current world situation versus our wardrobes and what we choose to bring in or take out.

I have decluttered my closet and now I do it only at the beginning of fall/winter and spring/summer. Then I decide If I am REALLY missing something and keep a list. Then what I could add if I have a "coup de coeur" (like a summer dress as I rarely find dresses that I like). I definitely keep clothes for a while before getting rid of them: I don't want to have any regret anymore: this is especially true for classic pieces as sometimes it is just that I have worn them a lot and want a change but think I should have kept them when I look at photos of me and think: "I looked good and it would be perfect this season why did I let it go!!!"

I work in an office and recently I realised that my personal style is so far away from the kind of clothes I have to wear to work that I need two separate sets of clothes. One of my biggest shopping failures over the last few years has been trying to buy clothes that I could wear to work and then use again on weekends and I ended up with lots of clothes that felt too casual for work and didn’t suit what I would choose to wear on the weekend. I’ve finally found the equilibrium.

This video was very helpful. I def went from clothing extreme to minimalist extreme trying to fix something and control peoples perception of me. It all boiled down to needed to accept myself for who i am and focus on what i actually like and use and not my fantasy self. Love your content!

awesome video, thank you especially about this "enough" thing! That's something I've been struggling with a long time. So happy to have found you! Currently in the 2nd season of decluttering and that internal conversation of each piece of clothing always involves guilt! No more of it! Always wanting to save it for a special occasion or when I lose weight or it's perfectly usable I shouldn't discard it or else I'll have to replace it $$$. Love your style and the confidence it exudes! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Looking forward to the next vid!

Thank you for this. I love that your lessons have moved you to be kind to yourself and so many wise conclusions that will ever be growing over time. So relate with your perspective on scarcity mentality. It makes you hold on to things or acquire things because of the perception of lack or not having and not being enough. When you the have abundance mindset, you realize there is no lack. And yet one of the best new perspectives I got was from an author who wrote a book “I’m not enough and that’s ok” which I find much more freeing because our needs always change and we will always have some kind of need as we continue to grow over time. Really appreciate this content Christina! Your transparency and vulnerability and willingness to share your story for the benefit of all of us, too!

Another great video ✌🏼🌱💚 When I started minimalism 7yrs ago I learned I only wanted materials like organic cotton, linen and hemp in my clothing, bedding, and towels, and it might mean I have to buy less items because they cost a little more but i’m not itching and I’m not wearing cotton that was sprayed with pesticides or polyester made of oil which helps the planet as well 💜

Your bit about guilt, our attempts to "fix" something, and gaining perspective is spot on.👍 Also, I appreciate you speaking about personalizing decluttering trends... taking on a copy/paste approach to any organizational trend does not work in the long term. 🤔🙅🏻‍♀

This video really refocused me on my needs rather than wants. I’ve noticed that I’ve strayed from the path of building my basics. I have acquired most of them, but still looking for a few. I’m trying to only buy what I need and using a few fashion bloggers/vloggers for ideas. I noticed I saved clothes they featured to my wishlist. But after watching this I deleted a bunch of things bc I don’t need them. ❤️ thanks! And yes to part 2!!!

Love that! Thanks! Nearly my whole life I have been limited to money or confidence or even possibilities. Now, over the years I gained so much confidence, reached a lot of new goals, have a better paied job and found my style and found a lot of cool possibilities to shop second hand. So I don't feel guilty anymore to own a lot of more than this special number of clothes 😉 I love that now a am able to express myself 💪🌷🌷🌷

Really insightful video Christina, thank you😊 I spent the day yesterday going through my wardrobe, my storage, suitcases, drawers (I have a shopping issue and a bigger letting go issue), I was determined to get rid of things I'd spent several weeks planning of getting rid of. I didn't have a number in mind but having listed everything (is that really sad??) I realise I panic buy. I see something and what if I never find anything better!!? Deep down I know there will always be something else that comes along or my desire will wain or I'll actually just forget about it. I've tried to put myself on a low buy (no buy is too much) since the beginning of the year. I think I've really shocked myself as I got rid of all those clothes and I still feel overwhelmed. One step at a time 😊

I “discovered” your channel not too long ago and I really like it. Thank you for your input regarding living an intentional life. Some years ago I used to buy clothes because they made me feel good. Then I had financial challenges and I stopped. Later what I wore and it’s quality were no linger important to me; and although I didn’t buy a lot, I notice now, that I didn’t put to much intention to it. Things are different now and I am older and looking for my style and I love it. My wardrobe is intentional now! Finding my style has made a difference in my selections.

Yes I would love a part two, I have been struggling with addiction to shopping for clothes for years, and now almost 58, i have sadly more shoes than I could count, more clothes than one person would ever need, and after 20 years of being a preschool teacher and taking a break for 3 months and working as a receptionist, I loved being able to dress up finally being able to use things I have collected for years, shoes, purses blazers, and my nice clothes, well tax season is almost over and my receptionist job was seasonal. So i will be starting a new job at a preschool a job where i have to wear uniforms, black work tee shirt with logo and black pants, sweats, leggings or shorts, I Literally have struggled with not taking this job finally with benefits {my past school jobs were usually churches and never had benefits} all because I don't want to wear a uniform. Sorry this is so long, but i really need to vent, and no one understands, I really need to get rid of 60 percent of my wardrobe and not let it control me any more. I use to shop when i was sad, and now i feel like i do it daily. thanks for listening .

Maybe you can take the job for now but keep looking for one with benefits that allows you to wear that beautiful wardrobe and you'd be so happy you might not continue to overbuy... but just enjoy what you have. Best of luck to you on your journey!

You love dressing up and the items you have collected. You don't have to get rid of them. Pack away the excess in seasons. Once a month take out a bundle and pick out a few items to swop out and refresh your wardrobe. Wear them at home or weekends for your enjoyment. If you get rid of them there is a high chance they will end up in landfill. It's better to get the longest best wear you can out of your things.

Retired teacher here. I started in 1988 public school in Ohio. At least 75% wore dress clothes, heels. Men in ties. In my final 15 years I witnessed, teacher t-shirts, kakies, low cut tops, skin tight everything, flip flops. Ugg. I feel that we need to dress out of respect for students and ourselves. We should be models of correct attire. I feel your pain.

As long as you have room for them, keep them. You already own them and it's nobody else's business how many clothes, shoes, etc you have. If you do have items to discard, try to sell them or give to a church or charity based organization. I have alot too, as you may have guessed. I am now trying to sell my unused items on Poshmark. I have also given some away to those who could use them. Don't feel guilty!!

I feel your pain! I am a preschool educator too, and I hate to wear uniforms. I am lucky that I don't have to wear one where I work, but sure thing I need a wardrobe for work and one for going out ☺️ Keep your beautiful clothes if you love them, why not? But if you feel like decluttering, I guarantee you it will be difficult but soooo satisfactory
