Is is not ridiculous that Linux can be 'hacked' by the same way too? All you have to do is- Step 1. Make a Flatpak app that has the following permission filesystem=host Step 2. the app shall write in the user's .bashrc or .zshrc and set alias and all to steal the root password. You can also do a xinput to log all key strokes...you get it. pretty much anything. Step 3. You have the root password. Ssh into the machine and do whatever you want. Step 4. Make some memes about how Linux is best on r/linuxmemes and promote Linux you-tubers who say "Linux is the best" and kill anyone who doesn't follow the hive mind. Step 5.Repeat.

Really? These clickbaits are getting out of hand nowadays it seems. Is Linux secure from people running malicious scripts with root privileges? Can't malicious scripts/programs put scripts under init in Linux aswell? Or maybe set up a Daemon? And the same goes for all the other moot points in this video. That is not to mention that the Regedit point is a joke in itself, anyone who is disabling Regedit is capable enough to not mess up random stuff there in the first place, you don't need to disable it to set a restraint on yourself or something. *If one is running random scripts on their system(whether with elevated privileges or not) no matter what Operating system it won't make a change.*

UAC should prevent most of these tools from making any changes, especially remotely. So unless you've disabled UAC (please don't do that!) then most of these scenarios should be prevented. Where most get into trouble is end-users downloading all sorts of crazy things from the internet and clicking links in emails. But not just end-users, also sysadmins working on Linux platforms. Remember log4j? That occurred because admins needed an easy to implement logging tool, and never took the time to configure it to turn off a bunch of features that weren't needed nor monitored, and bad actors ended up taking advantage of that. I've been in IT 11 years, and we have a saying... "The problem exists between the chair and the computer." Not saying you're wrong or that disabling some of these features isn't a good idea... but unless you have a very good understanding of what you are doing, you should double and triple check it before turning it off. Because after it breaks your computer you will now need to learn how to unbreak it.

Ideally, a standard user account should always be used for daily use, and the admin account should only be used when necessary. unfortunately as Microsoft still maintains the admin account as default in Windows this leads to many issues for users who stay with defaults, and for those who want to use a standard user account because there is a lot of software that is only intended to be used with admin accounts, for example most Android "emulators".

From my personal experience no OS is truly secure enough unless you use Common Sense 2.0, be it Linux, Windows or BSD (MacOS, etc.), since every OS has ways for users to screw up, them being simple scripts that you can willingly run on your system or stuff that you can install. Because remember, the problem is always between the Monitor and the Chair, almost never inside the machine itself.

TPM 2.0 IMPROVES the security of your device. What else is ridiculous?
@RemsHusband
@RemsHusband 2 жыл бұрын
@Andrew Felix No. TPM 2.0 doesn't really make your device more secure for the end user. The average Joe user will get absolutely no benefit from the security that TPM 2.0 will provide vs other tpm modules. It basically just stores encryption keys and various other keys that need to be kept secure, which TPM 1.6 can do just fine. At best, the TPM 2 requirement is a way to get people to buy new hardware. At worst, it will be able to be used against the end user.

I would really like to see what a modern Microsoft OS would look like made from the ground up. While the Linux kernel is constantly evolving, the Windows backend really hasn't changed much. In the long term my approach is going to use Windows as a pure gaming system with some smaller apps as required, if the information isn't on the system in the first place then what can they do with it. It also means I can scrub the whole system at anytime and just re-install. Anything relating to personal use will be Linux based, unfortunately this would mean a 3 system setup. Personal use, Gaming and Gaming support (recording, video editing, etc) with a NAS to support all 3.

I cannot stand Windows 11. If this is the direction Windows is going. I am happy to continue to use Linux as my OS. Linux is fast, secure, and reliable. I thought Chris will show a day one exploit to get in a fully patched and freshly installed Windows system. However Chris is showing how you can do nasty things when you first run software with administrative privileges. It is like showing how a vault is insecure by opening it with the keys and say "you see, you can get in." I don't know much about Linux but I am pretty sure you can do the same kind of things if you are logged in with root access.
@rickyGman11

Yeah it seems like a lot of pro linux guys are really starved for content nowadays. I really like Chris' videos, but this one seems like blatant clickbait purely appealing to the linux circlejerk. "If you run this script, or allow admin access to executables or files they can do damage to your computer" Yeah no duh, the same is true on linux. The only way I can rationalize this type of video with this type of title, is the target audience being "non techy" windows users, but those people are never going to find this video and if they did they would do the exact same thing Chris is warning against, "listening to some random dude and then running an executable without properly researching it" (regarding running this harden tool). And since they aren't the majority of the audience, the more technologically inclined have to listen to a video telling us to disable powershell??? Or worse move over to mac. What am I, a child?
@aienbalosaienbalos4186
@aienbalosaienbalos4186 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t watched the video, but a possible difference is that windows does not require a password to do so? As in, someone with physical access can quickly get a breach of you stand up to go get a cup of water. But I agree with the sentiment of the two comments above. These are quite big stretches. Edit: apparently a password is configurable in win10
@annoholics
@annoholics 2 жыл бұрын
@@aienbalosaienbalos4186 The first thing you are asked to do when you install Windows is to set an administrative password. Sure you can leave Windows wide open just like you can leave your vault open or leave your keys in your car. That is however not how the product is intended to be used. If you install Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise on a laptop and you encrypt the SSD with bitlocker, you use secure boot, and you don't install malicious software, then it is pretty secure. I will not claim that it can never be hacked but typically the OS is a lot better protected then the person who is using the computer, who is usually at fault when Windows is hacked.
@finnderp9977
@finnderp9977 2 жыл бұрын
I think daily use of Linux desktop require more likely scripts/bash than daily use of Windows requires powershell and vbs. But then its true that running random scripts downloaded from internet with admin rights may cause you trouble.
@annoholics
@annoholics 2 жыл бұрын
@@finnderp9977 My point is that an OS is not unsafe if you can run software on it when you have the keys to do so. That is the whole point of of an operating system. The purpose of an OS is to run software that you want to run. An OS is however unsafe when other people can run software on your computer without the keys. I did not see any evidence in this video that other people, who don't have the keys, can run software on a new Windows machine that is fully patched and have all the safety measures in place. If some home users, and also professionals, run software with admin privileges that they should not run is not the fault of Microsoft. The same thing can happen in Linux. Although I am not a Linux expert by any means, I am pretty sure that I can destroy any Linux system that I have root acces to.
