It's always fun to take a look at just what the main big broadcasters here in the UK have in store for us at Christmas time. So join me as we look at the schedules for BBC ONE, ITV1, CHANNEL 4 and CHANNEL 5 across CHRISTMAS EVE, CHRISTMAS DAY and BOXING DAY, to see if they are full of knockouts, or full of duds...

Three things: - ITV killing off CITV on ITV1 in the mornings might be the driving force behind all these gardening programmes, repeats and the usual news stuff you'd see on normal days instead. One of the many downsides of the slow death of ITV caring about kids content on TV. - Singing programmes (and any programmes directly about music) during Christmas is getting really tired, and shows how we can't just have something different on TV, but rather stick to old habits because they think it works best. - I believe Channel 5's schedule for Christmas Day isn't very good. If people really wanted to watch loads of Christmas songs on the big day, then music channels easily fulfil that role, not a public broadcaster. Even the day before isn't very good, almost as if Channel 5 want to show the programmes they are talking about themselves, but can't, so they resort to showing documentaries ABOUT them.

'Singing Programmes', are cheap to make. As are shows about DIY, gardening, antiques, auctioning and any other 'lifestyle', programmes you can think of. Which is exactly why they're on. It's the alternative to the time honoured showing of repeats, (something they also do a lot of), in order to not spend money.

ITV1 are repeating The King's Christmas Message at quarter past eleven in British Signed Language. The BBC have taken the approach of simulcasting the King's Christmas Message on bbc1 and bbc2 with the British Signed Language version on BBC2.

See I unashamedly love having the channel 5 xmas songs compilation on in the background whilst I'm having an afternoon snooze🤣 class that they just rock it every year. But BBC One takes the cake. Eastenders has been at its best this year and I'm sure the Xmas day episode won't disappoint

As always after the Call The Midwife Christmas Special a new series follows on in the new year on BBC One usually in the first week of January of about 8 episodes for a series.

BBC 1 and Channel 4 seem to be winning with their Christmas programmes this year. I'm so excited to watch Mog and Tabby McTat 🥰🫶🏻 I'm also buzzing to see so much of Raymond Briggs' work being programmes, especially The Bear, which, along with The Snowman, is a personal favourite ❤ So happy to see this video pop up on my notifications for yet another year 🥰✨️ It's better than getting the Radio Times! 😉

Id recommending watching ghosts up until the most recent episode as you'll definitely be able to catch up for the special as I believe it will be super Christmassy and great fun up to the big say (though if you are heavy in panto mode maybe not enough time but it has some of the new great Christmas specials)

One time, I thought about an imaginary film called 'The Cat Who Once Was' (not real, I just... came up with it) and after watching the Channel 4 part, thought about a Christmas edition of it (not real, see top line) on an imaginary TV channel called 6TV (my favourite number is 6, and I just pieced things together) Yep, my mind can come up with many things by itself

Will be recording a decent amount of these programmes. Also, ‘The Snowman’ is 100% a timeless masterpiece. Edit: Aside from ITV1 and the CITV Channel (when it still existed), ITV also have news interruptions between moves on all other channels (like ITV2 and ITV4). Edit 2: ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and ‘The Grinch’ are reruns, but ‘Sing 2’ is the network premiere, as well as the British Terrestrial Television Premiere.

Ironically when Channel 5 first launched back in 1997, they said about how when they did movies they wouldn't have the news break because apparently ITV used to be really bad with that with a late film being interrupted by News at Ten. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though

It used be annoying because they would cut to the news at 10 when films were often getting to the climax then after the news sometimes it was only the last half an hour of a film when they could have just put the news on a bit later.

Do you remember when Channel 5 launched with the line from Tim Vine "Don't you just hate it when the news interrupts a film?" I suppose this is the difference the channel being owned by Viacom?

Does anyone know why Channel 5 showed that Only Fools and Horses Greatest Christmas episodes documentary for that was shown on Christmas Eve?. Why wasn't this shown on BBC1?. I've noticed C5 showed another Fools and Horses documentary a few years ago. Why are they suddenly showing Fools and Horses docs on Channel 5?.

I find it odd that Home Alone 2 has suddenly switched to ITV this year when they usually show both films on Channel 4. Personally I prefer the second film purely because of the scene where Marv gets electrocuted! 🤔🤔🤔

Beyond paradise is the death in pardise spin off. it follows the old detective who is played by that guy kris marshall from my family fame as he settle in to uk. he left the original death in pardise due to beign away from family and DUI. For me I am looking forward to Dr Who and GHOSTS UK , The UK verison will end but the US verison screen on CBS in US is still going. Me too, honestly. ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky used to show them as well as Disney’s own channels. The Disney channels shit down, Sky can only have them on the Sky Store as of now and the other networks completely lost the rights. An advantage to this is that numerous classic Disney and Pixar films have been broadcast on the BBC over the past few years, such as ‘The Lion King’, ‘Toy Story 2’, ‘Monsters Inc’ and ‘The Incredibles’, and more modern Disney movies too including ‘Tangled’ and ‘Frozen’. It had been years since some of these aired on TV prior to the BBC airings.

I read that Top of the Pops was returning this xmas but it doesn't seem to be. Ive been watching Classic Xmas Day Top of the Pops on BBC 4 this week and last nights was 1984. It was obviously done differently that year (I was 5) as there weren't any presenters, instead it was just the artists introducing each other after they had performed. (so basically an artist would perform then they would introduce the next artist to perform)

Quite a lot to choose from on all the main channels, Unsure why Emmerdale and Coronation Street on Christmas Day are only on for 30 mins bit strange usually always an hour long episode in recent times. Out of BBC 1 and ITV1/STV I'd say BBC 1 seems too have the slightly better schedule, cookery programs on Christmas Morning not really what kids will want too watch, I see the 3.10pm battle of films is gone now with the big 2. Think Channel5 has always been bad for doing entertainment news updates during films must be too cover costs for the films that they are showing possibly ?

Again, I, much like you, haven't got a clue in the slightest why Channel 5 interrupts their films with news reports. They're awful for this, adverts are understandable but a news report about entertainment gossip. Does it really warrant it cutting into a film when you're in the swing of watching it? It's not only at Christmas, it's all year round that they do this. It's nice that BBC One, Channel 5 and 4 have stuff on for the children early in the morning too. I think I'll give Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a watch this year, perhaps. (ITV2 was also a pain for having films interrupted by news bulletins too).

C5 interrupts movies and primetime programs by news or entaintment news as a hang up from back when they did on the hour news updates back in 97. Hope it changes in 2024.

BBC One has the best Christmas TV line up closely followed by Channel 4 and ITV1 - Channel 5 has the weakest line up by far, and yes they are still making full series of Vera and Call The Midwife

ITV2 does have animated Shows after CITV finishes at 9am they got 70 minutes of extra Animated shows with the Madagascar penguins in a Christmas caper at 9am, Trolls Holiday at 9:10am and Kung Fu Panda Holiday at 9:45am, They are also showing Ice Age at 1:10pm while E4 is showing The Tiger Who Came to Tea at 6:00am, We're Going On A Bear Hunt at 6:30am, The Snowman at 6:25am/5:25pm The Snowman and The Snowdog at 7:30am/6:00pm and Mog's Christmas at 6:30pm

Thanks for reminding me why I gave up on television years ago. Nothing much has changed, I see. The same, old mediocre day-time TV promoted to prime time Christmas slots, with, 'Christmas', in their titles. 🤣 Not to mention the long list of repeated shows. There's a few movies of note, but nothing worthy that hasn't been seen before.

The reason channel 5 (and alot of movie channels) have a news in between the film is so they can put more ads in it

It's pretty poor fare. In the old days the TV channels used to spend big on Christmas Day programming purchasing movie rights, big tv specials and exciting children's programmes by the score but it's become a cheap event, and falling back on your archives to pull out things that have been on millions of times and classing that as entertainment is pure laziness.

well with channel 5 (and also itv2 does this as well) having news in between films is because of a loophole in Ofcom's rules on the amount of advertising you can have on a film. lets say its a 2 hours film. you can only have 3 breaks max but if you break it into 2 parts the ads still count i think but with the new part of the schedule you can have around 2 more breaks. or well thats my guess on why

The ITV channel has been crap for years i never tune into the channel i haven't since early 2018. Their tv shows are just rubbish. I think they're trying to get more viewers for their APP ITVX. I watch more ITV shows on ITVX and ITV2 mostly for Family Guy, American Dad and repeats of Plebs. I feel on ITVX they put their best tv shows on their Archie about Cary Grant, Tom Jones. I just don't enjoy watching the main ITV1 TV channel i just avoid it.
