Do you need some Christmas dinner ideas? Well with Christmas just around the corner, a lot of department stores and supermarkets have launched festive menus. Two of those places being Morrisons and Sainsbury's. So I decided to pay them a visit to and try out their Christmas dinners to see who's best.
Location:
Morrisons, Harrogate

This is interesting for me. I worked in one grocery store that did catering for holiday meals but it is not common in Canada. And you certainly can’t order a hot meal in a grocery store. Let alone a Christmas feast. You are very lucky to have these amenities.

Shame the veg at Morrisons wasn't up to par. I'm going for the 3-course Morrison's festive menu at £12.00, so a starter and dessert make it even better value. Fingers crossed my local Morrisons cooks the veg!

I stand corrected but this type meal all comes from the freezer. I guess a chef cooking fresh meals like a turkey roast is not cost effective. However with my non critical hat on, both meals looked filling and appetising but Sainsbury's came out on top for me based your review, but great value for money can't be beaten after a weary shopping trip. Had you gone a local restaurant or quality Garden centre restaurant I'm sure a similar fresh ingredients cooked roast would cost double.

Good evening, well first impression at Morrison's.Well as an old retired chef, I thought it looked awful 😮 Most,if not all the vegetables were frozen. Nothing wrong with that, but badly cooked is another matter. Watching the water drip from the grey/ green overcooked sprouts 😢 Carrotts and the parsnips were beyond bad.Mashed potatoes were likely to be packet 😮 I don't remember when Cauliflower Cheese became the go to vegetable 😮Yorkshire Pudding has no place on a Christmas lunch. The turkey clearly a catering processed roll.Sainsbury's next stop. Well frozen roasties, but given longer to brown. Sprouts, could be freshly prepared and cooked. Cauliflower Cheese was very pale. The pigs in blankets (3) actually looked good😊 Again couldn't see the turkey clearly, but think probably frozen catering roll 😮 More carefully prepared and served food at Sainsbury's with stuffing as well as Cranberry would have been a 9.5,but 8.5 is my score ALLAN&FAMILY

I find the more expensive the restaurant the less time they spend “cooking” the food 😂 I hate crunchy veg I like it to be soft I also insist on enough gravy to fill my Yorkshire puddings it softens them up and keeps them hot longer and when you cut into them your plate becomes flooded with gravy again 😊 Oh & I preferred the Sainsbury’s 😊

I would say the presentation of Sainsbury’s festive meal was better than the Morrison offering. Granted you got a Pot of tea at Morrison's and who doesn't like a big cuppa or pot of tea, you missed out on the stuffing at Sainsbury’s which was a shame, did the gravy come on the plate already? the thrill of any festive meal is finally adding the gravy to coat all the goodies on the plate, and I saw the Morrison's meal gave you this option. The Sainsbury’s meal was your winner, I would agree those roasties looked lovely, where were the carrots though.? In terms of the costs, I think the £8.80 represented good value for money. Thanks very much for this, one final comment what Camera/phone are you using to get such quality close-ups? and these were mouthwatering close-ups.

You do or can get cranberry sauce at morrisons but you have to ask for it, or I was told I had to when I got my meal last time. I think you were vey lucky with Morrisons roast potatos they very often taste cardboardy and mealy, the gravy helps disguise that. I also have to say that when I got my meal at Morrisons I was shocked by how nice the mash was. It really tasted buttery and tasty. I can't comment on Sainsburys as I've not eaten there. But your meal looked good.

Call me an old philistine, but we never ate mashed potatoes or cauliflower cheese at Christmas! Mum never served the Yorkshires for starters either, she said it was a sign of poverty, although we were not rich by any standards. Mum always cooked the stuffing inside the turkey so it was never too tough but nice and soft and flavour flowed in to the turkey, which let's face it is not the most flavoursome of meats! I think the Morrisons didn't look overly appealing! Id go for Sainsbury there! Nice vid though!

For me, Morrisons just looked to crammed on a small plate (maybe it was big and still crammed) and it was off putting (imo). And as you noted, the roasties and carrots looked unimpressive and the sprouts needed some butter.

Sainsbury takes it for me due to the turkey and the roast potatoes looking better but Morrisons give a greater value with more content.

I thought both looked quite poor for the price. The Sainsbury's veg looked much fresher, but both had processed Turkey.

Oh no! I really like Morrisons but that dinner looked absolutely wretched!! Instant mash, soggy frozen veg, dry yorkshires and sandwich meat turkey. Yuk. And what's this Cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner? I've never heard of that one before. Mmmmm, cheesy gravy 🤢🤢 But great video. Thanks.

It was immediately apparent that the Morrisons sprouts were frozen. That's enough to turn me off straight away, but undercooking parsnips is unforgiveable. Parsnips, slow-roasted in the oven with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper and rosemary, make any meal special. The Sainsburys meal looked dull and unappetising apart from the fresh, vibrant green sprouts. The lack of stuffing, carrots and parsnips was surprising. I wouldn't choose either meal. Turkey meat is extremely bland and often dry. It requires gravy and condiments to make it palatable. Any other meat would be preferable. By that, I mean any other meat normally eaten in the UK. I'm not talking about squirrel or iguana.

Frozen sprouts are basically pre cooked but they work great for halving and frying with some grated lemon zest and sea salt, they're always really nice and sweet that way. I imagine Morrisons just toss these in water and boil the crap out of them in the microwave though.
