Loved this! I remember that the mistletoe had to be shot out of the trees to get it. It was important and made For fun back in the day when kisses weren’t passed out Willy-nilly. Young people today would think mistletoe was lame. 🤦🏼‍♀️ We called biting into a pie without cutting it, eating it “Yogi Bear style”. 😃🥧 My Grams told me that the animals knelt at midnight on Christmas Eve in honor of Baby Jesus. ❤️🌟Thanks for this list.

So beautiful, these stories are like huggs from Jesus, I'm 53 and my grandparents have passed, and are parents never shared much with us.at all about there childhoods, and me I tell my grand children everything about the days we lived on farms and milked cows and the ducks and chicken mishaps and the donkey we loved and the horses we raised, hanging out the clothes cause we had no dryer, planting pumpkins and picking fresh food out of the garden, there's beauty in everything we touch if we take time to see it, there little smiles, the cloth diapers, I don't miss, seven children, now adults, I saved so much money, there's precious gifts in everything we do and say in a life time, if we just take the time to do and say them, during this new year hearts be glad and see the prizes in life that are freely given, Godspeed, until next time, keep those tasty stories coming young man, SINCERLY Tammiejo

I was born in Oak Ridge Tennessee but was pretty much raised in a little East Tennessee town called Kingston. Now my mom and her parents came to East Tennessee from West Virginia and they brought a lot of the mountain ways with them. When you start talking about superstition, wife's tales, folk lore and such I actually get tears in my eyes from the memories they bring. I was born in April 1950 so I feel that I was lucky to grow up when I did and where I did. THANKS DONNIE

I’m loving ALL of these stories SO much! It will be a year ago October 5 that I lost my last living grandparent…my grandma who lived to be 88. I am 43 and have grown up hearing a lot of the things you talk about and my husband of almost 24 years and I have raised our kids telling them all of these things. Our kids are more “old souls” than most kids today. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge is practically in our back yard…it’s been home away from home our whole lives! One superstition I remember from being a kid and hearing a lot is that you didn’t want to get an open wound or anything like that during the dog days in August or it would take twice as long to heal. I actually witnessed that when my little brother got bit by our blind dog during a dog scuffle. I sure would love to hear the stories you talk of that your mamaw told…thanks…sure have enjoyed hearing all of this

Really enjoyed this video Donnie! Some I had heard and some I had never heard 😀I agree with what you said about folks believing in folklore but also believing in their Lord and Savior-I've found that to be very true.

Our country household was pretty large. As things worked out, there was usually 4 at home just as the oldest graduated high school; that child, in their Senior year, always was tasked with cutting the Christmas tree and getting all the decorations on. Young adults usually went out on their own at that age, and my parents wanted them to 'feel' their last Christmas at home, and the responsibility of expectations from others .

This channel brings so many memories back to me of my grandma and grandpa. Every show brings so many things back that I’ve forgot over time. Thank you for that. Thank you for this gift. It always makes me smile 😊 and makes me feel so warm and at peace❤️

I knew about taking your decorations down by Epiphany on the sixth and sweeping trouble away from your door and bringing holly in to the house. Although I now live in TX, I was born and raised in Upper East Tennessee, as were my grandparents, my great grandparents, my great great grandparents, great, great, great grandparents, and so on. Donnie, one day last week I misplaced my favorite bracelet. I looked ALL day for it. I watched a few of your videos and shared them with my husband; . After dinner I was alone and thought I am going to find that bracelet. I went into my bedroom and looked on my dresser. I was SO mad at myself. I then turned around to turn off the light and just happen to look at the floor. THERE WAS MY BRACELET! It was sitting in front of my husband's dresser. I was so happy. Just found this jewel and it brought back wonderful memories. We always the mistletoe. And I have caroled all over the place for old people and the hospital. with my family since early childhood. I remember Mama crying as we sang for the little children with bald heads in a children cancer ward. As for #17, I am a big singer, and don't know whether it is bad luck, but I have always refused to sing carols before Thanksgiving or after January 6. Thanks for posting, and God bless you!

Thank you, Donnie for your Appalachian Christmas Superstition list. There's some fascination history there, and I just love it. Merry Christmas my friend, to you and all your family, friends and loved ones.

As a child, I heard many stories and beliefs about Christmas. My favorite story was about how the animals who were in the stable knelt to baby Jesus and in appreciation, God gave them the ability to talk once a year, on Christmas Eve. To this day, I still open my bedroom window and hope that I will hear the animals talk. Juvenile, yes - but perhaps we need to get in touch with our inner child - Christmas through a child's eyes can restore our faith in not only our adult selves, but to remind us of what makes Christmas so special. We may not have a lot, but if we have love - there is no better gift than love of family and friends. Merry Christmas to all, and I hope that the New Year brings us a chance to make our little corner of the world a little bit more tolerant and accepting of those around us. 🎄🎄🌄🌄💖💖💖

Thank you for another cozy and informative video. When I was a kid in the early 1960's, adults in my family told me that barn animals can talk on Christmas Eve. About black eyed peas, I love to fix "hoppin' John" for New Year's Day. My father told me one, after he did it... Never let anyone vacuum, or sweep, under your feet or you'll never have children. I never did have children. But that's an everyday Appalachian superstition. Really liked this one. Thank you from Kentucky. Just went out with my wife and daughter and shot some mistletoe out of a tree last week. Been giving it to friends and family. My dad and grandpa used too but don't know many others who did this. We do it to make memories with our kids.

I love this chanel. I have only been to Appalachia through reading and the internet. Someday I would love to visit. I wonder if some of the superstitions were brought from countries from which people came from years ago. Some of the superstitions I have heard here in New England. I enjoyed this very much. I wish everyone joy this Christmas and our coming New year. We must never lose the true meaning of our Savior's Birth, in spite of the commercialization of Christmas.

The wind is really blowing out in Santa Fe, Tn late this Christmas Eve so hopefully we’ll have a great next year! I remember driving to town with my daddy and every time we’d pass this same group of trees he would say, “You see that green in the tops of those trees? That’s mistletoe.” After passing by a few times I told daddy, “You tell me this same thing every time we pass these trees.” In his infinite wisdom he answered, “Well, I’ve known you all your life and it always takes three or four times of repeating myself before you finally listen.” He’s been gone just two months shy of ten years now. I miss my daddy and I love your stories.
