in the future christopher alexander will be remembered in the same breath as galileo and descartes. he has provided scientific proof that all physical matter is holy and demonstrated an empirical connection between the built environment and the human soul

Thanks for this. The blessing (there is surely no other word) offered to many is thanks to the fidelity of a few. May this work grow; and grow!

This may be the last talk he gave. Yes, he's ill. And anyone who finds the way to this video is lucky to hear what he had to say, no matter how slowly that unfolds. Patience, mes enfants. Listen and learn.

its funny. people say he's slow & they're probably right. but communication-wise, "The Pattern Language" is - by far - the best communication of complex information i've ever come across. each pattern (of 270 odd) reduced to its essence. basically a name + a short description + a doodle-style drawing + a couple of photos + a bit of other stuff. no more than a couple of pages of A5 each. communicative brilliance

Ian McHarg's "Design with Nature" is a complementary read for Chris Alexander's work, as well.

that is kind of what he did in his books. he had an inarguably empirical methodology (although of course counter to the current metaphysics of mechanistic-materialism that has so corrupted the scientific method). He even was able to quantify things by identifying the number of local symmetries. Someone could literally write a computer program to measure some of the things he was talking about in a visual image (because it all comes down to *space* and matter).

I wonder if this gentleman realizes how much of the problems he’s pointed to might be explained in large part by Iain McGilchrist’s theories in the master and his emissary.

It's hard to imagine how such a vague idea caught on, but out of others necessity to find meaning in relationships, to understand and find purpose in their own work, and in a spiritually barren world needing someone to tell them to "find their patterns"

When he talks about "Love" for our world and the spaces, etc. he's talking about something that JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were both very familiar with and put int their fiction as context.

The description area of this video should clarify that Christopher was ill when this lecture was presented. This is NOT his normal lecture style. But since this event was scheduled months in advance at his alma mater school, he went through with it, Sad really. Many other better videos are on KZfaq. And of course his remarkable writings. @Permasolutions please note.

He is obviously not well here. He’s normally meticulous and has long artful pauses in talks but is never slow like this.

Chemtrails or confidence trick trails (con-trails) add a lot to removal of the "spirit", "soul", "vibe" or "energy" (genius loci) of the place or the object or the entire city, forest, valley etc.

Sorry, six and a half minutes in and I'm so irritated with this godawful introduction, I've decided to try other ways to get to learn about Christopher Alexander. If this is the typical level of discourse at Berkeley, then a diploma from there couldn't be worth much.

Wouldn't he have to scientifically and empirically prove the existence of a soul first?
