In a last minute episode that I honestly didn't think was going to happen, Christopher Bowes, the brains behind Alestorm and Gloryhammer, joins us for Episode 12 of The Back Lounge Podcast! We started off pretty casual, and the more the episode went on we just started getting off the rails and had a ton of laughs talking about stuff like German Gangster Rap, how weird but amazing tour bus drivers are, getting drunk at country concerts, writing songs for dogs, buying a pet giraffe, and how wild it is for Chris to live in the US now.

You guys talking about the difference between the US and Euro metal scenes resonates so deeply with me. I'm a woman, I'm a lifelong metalhead, my dad was a drummer, my older sister is obsessed with Metallica. I lived in South FL in my teens around the weird FL Death Metal and Metalcore scene. Around age 15, I started listening to Cradle of Filth which led to Dimmu Borgir which was my gateway drug to the entire Euro metal scene, my favorite band has been Nightwish now for 18+ years, and the same shit used to happen to me. I'd try to show this stuff to American metalheads and they were like "yeah, what the f~ is this girly bullshit? its not metal, you know every band with a lady singer is trying to be Evanescence now, it's just a gimmick, what is this symphonic nonsense? It's not 'real metal' and you're not a 'real metalhead'... why do they even let girls in here..." etc etc. I think this is part of why I got so hooked on/obsessed with Nightwish (and other) reaction vids. Because it's so satisfying, seeing people who NEVER would have given this stuff a real listen just having their minds blown, or people who have just never been exposed to anything like it just being absolutely blown away. I love you metalhead reactors for this reason *so much* - especially when Americans are finding these bands finally because of you! Sometimes I'll listen to the Widows Weeds album by Tristania (1998) or The Olden Domain by Borknagar (1997) and I'm just struck with this, "They were doing this back when I was in elementary school, what the hell was the American scene DOING? How are we STILL sitting on our thumbs and not taking cues from these amazing bands that have been doing AMAZING MUSIC like this for DECADES?" Oops, I wrote you a novel. Sorry Tank. Thanks if you actually read it.

I'm well into my 40s and really think I was born on the wrong continent. Nightwish was my gateway into the female fronted metal scene. Now there's like 2 bands from America I still listen to. At this point if the band isn't from Scandinavia I just don't care lol.

I loved listening to you guys talk about Tennessee. I was born there (east side of the state, in Knoxville) and lived there until I was about 10 1/2. My dad grew up in Manchester, so we always spent a lot of time in Nashville (James Robertson, one of the city's co-founders is a couple greats down the line Grandfather of mine). Still have family pretty close by in Murfreesboro. I quite enjoyed this podcast!!

When Chris talked about local bands, it was so great to hear it. For Example at Budapest there will be Alestorm, Visions of Atlantis and also a hungarian pirate metal band, called Rumproof. I listed that guys since the first EP of them, they had only six songs on it, but they just blown up the pub where they played, it was insane. I'm so proud on this guys, they will play before these bands, totally insane.

I really love what Alestorm do. Metal is a very broad genre and some great work has been done that is very serious, but it also lends itself very well to the over the top and ridiculous. Some people take it way too seriously. If metal was po-faced, heavy and deadly serious all the time, it would not only be dull, we wouldn't have most bands, including many of those that the gatekeepers think of as proper.

It's time for me to say Thank You to Tank and some of the othe reactors. Many years I only heard music on radio, where they play mostly main stream pop. Only when I started to watch reaction channels I learned about bands like Electric Callboy, Alestorm, Nanowar of steel, Tool and many others who obviously were on the market since decades. Now that I'm retired I can hear Alestorm for hours in a repeat loop - as long as my wife doesn't hear it. She tends more to Deutsche Schlager.

And as someone who's a big fan of Alestorm AND Running Wild I do not understand all this overprotective arguing on the Pirate Metal thing. If we talk about the Alestorm fans and how there are a couple of groups of fans, in my opinion it depends on the environment that you consume the content really. As an Alestorm fans I really like the first three albums the most, because I spend my free time playing video games and for some games that more serious pirate vibe is really spot on. However I never trash talked their party songs, it feels really ungrateful honestly. Like these guys are sweating their asses off to realise something for the fans, so when I see new single or album from them , I listen to it and if it’s not my cup of tea I just move on but still appreciate the song.

LOL I hope Chris reads this, let me share my favorite misheard lyrics story. On my very first Alestorm show I didn't know most of the old songs, and I'm not a native English speaker, so I didn't know what a wench was. After the show I asked my husband, "why are they singing about wrenches and mead?" He was laughing so hard, and still to this day often brings this up. But in my defense, they sold out a long time ago, so why couldn't they sing about wrenches XD

Oh hell no!!! I still have CD's, Cassettes, AND vinyl... Oh hell yeah! I have racks!! I also have a multi CD player for doing multi mix... I do have the digital only for when I am travelling, but I **NEED** to have the physical media because computers can "eat" your files, and online streaming CAN close their doors and your stuff is GONE! I will always have my hard media that I can play no matter what. I would LOVE to be able to come up with hidden "puns" and fun stuff for Alestorm!! I will say this to ALL supposed "Metal heads"... I was there at the BIRTH of Metal I have watched all the splits and focus onto different "Genres" that are the Metal landscape at this point... some I love, some I like, and some I can only raise an eyebrow... to each their own but NONE of you can lay claim to ALL of Metal... you can champion your own little sect all you want but you do NOT speak for all Metal heads. It's all cool, enjoy what you like, but don't even THINK about speaking for me...

I was there at Brixton and it was an absolutely stunning and mental show apart from the fact that I got crippling covid there 🤘

Why would Chris think that Germans do not like Alestorm? At least in my bubble everyone knows and loves both Alestorm and Gloryhammer. So much love from Germany! Also much love to you, Tank, for these Interviews. Some of the best talks with artists I've seen. So so much better than these standard questions.

Because Alestorm is basically a dumbed down Running Wild parody. And Running Wild is german royalty.

See, the ironic thing is , on the point of the funny stuff not doing so well, Curse Of The Crystal Coconut is actually my favourite Alestorm album. So fucking fun.

Great podcast so far. Chris Bowes is very interesting person. I didn't heard it to the end but I'm curious that you ask Chris about dog verisons of song? Will see (or hear). :)

Speaking of American metal bands that should be bigger, lord's of the trident. If it was the 80s or 90s they would be huge.. they deserve way more and their new album is awesome

I mean yeah it's funny also cause even with English songs back when I was a kid I was abysmal in English and didn't know anything. So the songs I'd just remember the sounds of it, and not really any words. And it's funny cause even to this day even though I now know pretty good English, I'd just listen to an old popular song and realize "wait what am I even singing, those aren't words", just cause they are stuck in my brain as just the sounds I was hearing as a kid.

Great Podcast, Tennessee sounds fun. I'm a vinylguy (roundabout 1500 and counting) and are still playing them. His gestures and speeking sonetimes reminds me of Quentin Tarantino. @Tank any updates on the postbox? Have some ideas to send you stuff

Tank, if you see this, PLEASE react to Spirits by Nothing More. I haven't seen many big channels listen to their stuff but it goes hard. Major Rip and Tear vibes.
