Rene was definitely ahead of his time when it came to scientific studies. Unfortunately, his illusion of a make pretend God inhibited his growth. But one could also argue that Rene only supported the idea of a God because of the fear of persecution from the crown? Hard to say. Hitchens doesn’t bring anything new to society. Nuns were lesbians for hundreds of years... nothing wrong about homosexuality, the real issue is the abuse of power by the ones in the position of power... and the bigotry combined with the hypocrisy. As if they had any moral ground to stand on...

Conviction through belief I would say had no room nor was needed in his arguments, since he could present substantial amounts of evidence holding up to scrutiny when shone light upon them, thus supporting his statements. Furthermore, he had the necessary courage to admit being wrong when shown to and hence the decency to openly change his views to the more precise. It was and still is up to the members of the audience to dare make the effort of thinking for themselves and thereby finding out whether the presuppositions they adhere to have any anchoring in a reality that persist on its own terms, independent of preference based desirability. Was there ever a more well spoken enlightened man, I haven't met or heard of one. Thank You, honourable sir, for remaining a beacon of reason till the very end, in a world now poorer of wit.

I too liked Hitch and I am a Christian. Hitchens often displayed hostility to Christians but not always. If you think that you can handle a challenge to your claim that his views stood up to scrutiny, here is another atheist holding his views up to scrutiny. I am not intending to be hostile. Just wanting to offer you a different perspective. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNWgopx2nLulhoU.html Best regards, Sam

Hitchens could be appallingly rude, unnecessarily blunt and, ironically, gratuitously sanctimonious in his debates with defenders of religion. And yet he showed more class, more compassion and more knowledge of the subject matter than any of the so-called "moral" hypocrites with whom he regularly mopped the debate floor.

Christopher never had to call himself a feminist that fought for and talked about the empowerment of woman. He adored his wonderful mom who insisted he got the finest education available. I can't think of a more generous man in all of modern history than Christopher Eric Hitchens. He waterboarded himself to report what it was like to his readers to debunk Dick Cheney's claim it was not torture.

+Chris O'Malley I think this is a 'debate' with Bill Donahue of the Catholic League. It occurred 7 years before Hitchens published 'God is Not Great'. So it is not one of the debates or conversations on religion that sprang from that. I also hesitate to call this a 'debate' since Donahue has no clue what that means. He just lets rip with a tirade of childish insults. The priest who organised the event is visibly embarrassed. There are a few clips on youtube but I think the only place you will find the full thing will be on the Catholic League website. Hope it helps.

@ThisCharmingMan19844 жыл бұрын
Neil kenny Kenny The priest is just the moderator of the debate- though obviously he wasn’t unbiased. Hitch’s opponent, was that repugnant arsehole, Bill Donohue; the self righteous prick who was, and still is, the president of that ratbag organisation, the “Catholic League”. He’s a deeply horrible individual; it’s a shame that Christopher Hitchens is no longer with us, while vile, bigoted arseholes, like Bill Donohue, are still alive and kicking. If there was ever proof that there is no god, that would be it haha. The full debate might be on KZfaq: if not, you should be able to either watch it somewhere else online, or download it. I have a big collection of Hitch debates, talks, interviews, etc, that I downloaded years ago, called “Hitchens Archive”: I got it off a torrent site- if you look up “Hitchens Archive”, it should still be available to download. I’d highly recommend it, as it has tons of amazing stuff in it; even though it’s probably all stuff you can find online, in different places, it’s nice to have it all in one collection. 😀 Hope you find/have already found the full debate. All the very best.

+Dan 1984 I think the full thing is still available on the Catholic League's website. Otherwise it's in three or four chunks on KZfaq. Comments disabled, of course. The cretin Donahue opens the whole thing with a butthurt diatribe against the media generally but soon gets into personal insults and a xenophobic rant against the English. His infantile version of 'debate' continues and gets worse each time he speaks. In fairness to the priest moderating the event, he at least had the decency to look horribly embarrassed at Donahue's dazzling display of crassness. In his first response, Hitchens starts by thanking the priest for his generosity and the 'absence of vulgarity' in his introduction. Donahue might appear to have had the crowd on his side, but he lost from that moment, and didn't even realise it. Talk about Dunning Kruger! Lol. There are some people for whom the word 'cunt' was invented. Donahue is one of them, in my view.

@@ThisCharmingMan1984 Do you have the video of Frank Turek wiping the floor with Christopher Hitchens? You should do... That's on KZfaq.
@ThisCharmingMan19844 жыл бұрын
Pat Aherne I’m sorry, but no such video exists: and believe me, I’ve looked. I have seen the debates Frank Turek had with Christopher Hitchens; in each one he proved himself to be an utter moron, who was outclassed in every aspect of the discussion, and had absolutely no real evidence to refute all of the facts Mr. Hitchens pointed out. He’s nothing but a Christian apologist, who pretends to use “scientific reasoning” to explain the mythology he’s chosen to live by. Maybe you weren’t watching their debates close enough to see this; or perhaps you were just deceived by your own personal beliefs/biases, which clouded your judgement. Either way; try watching those debates again, without your religious blinkers on, and hopefully at least some of the facts Mr. Hitchens pointed out might get through to you. Still, never mind all that now- it’s not important, compared to everything else at the moment; I hope you, your family and friends, are all doing well during this global health crisis. And I truly mean that. Stay safe. 👍 All the very best. 😀
