Vanity Fair columnist and alcohol enthusiast Christopher Hitchens answers an audience question regarding his favorite whiskey.
-----
Acclaimed writer and political scholar Christopher Hitchens may just be the only writer to have recently visited Iran, Iraq and North Korea. Hitchens - known for his keen wit, sharp political insight and often controversial opinions - examines the differences between the countries once linked as the "axis of evil," while revealing intriguing connections between the nations. - Commonwealth Club of California
Christopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications.

@joe duggan G'day Joe, I appreciate your comments and I'm certain Christopher would have been genuinely humbled by them. I can see him blushing now. As a fellow journalist, I had the amazing privilege of meeting up with him several times when I worked, briefly in New York.We did an unforgettable tour (well, a little fuzzy at the time) of some of his favourite watering holes. Christopher could speak authoritatively on any subject I could come up with. My tipple is Armagnac or Cognac and I didn't get his liking for JW Black. I mentioned the much better, I thought, JW Green and Blue labels... he said he couldn't afford them which, of course, was complete piffle. Christopher was a talented teller of jokes and could do some passable impersonations of famous people. Like thousands, probably millions of others, I was genuinely devastated at his untimely death; a death he faced with the inevitable courage of a Spitfire pilot. When Ryan, (see above), made a funny comment on my mention of whisky, I now, regretfully, discovered the hateful, cruel and totally misinformed comments attached to this video. I could not let them go without a response from me. I detest those who attack a great man who has died and is no longer able to defend himself. This is especially hateful when these individuals hide behind phoney names. Thank you for being a decent man and helping me point out to the world endearing attribute, intellect and many talents of the dearly departed Hitch. Cheers and thanks... BH

@Melissa Oestreich G'day Melissa, Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry if I confused or misled you. I'm having deeply troubling memories issues now, sufficient to warrant medical intervention, such as is available. I've actually, inexplicably, said, in a comment elsewhere, I never met The Hitch, that was in the context that I had sought to interview him for decades and was unsuccessful. Yes, in fact, I did meet Christopher three times. A fellow journalist told me of some of Hitch's favourite watering holes. Many years ago I was living in New York and stringing for several Aussies newspapers and radio stations. My regular stipend came from News Limited; writing feature articles on well-known film actors, directors and screenwriters etc. (I had done a book on the history of the Australian film industry and was a film writer/critic) Like it or not I became the 'film bloke', I love film so I went with the flow. ('hard new, politics and economics leaves me stone cold). The meetings were just two blokes sitting at a bar and, the first time, the talk got around to comedy and then film. Hitch was a great fan of both and a naturally funny person. We hit it off as it turned out we loathed a diverse group of the same people, including my employer at the time, 'Uncle Rupert'. We also shared a love of English, booze, and cigarettes; he whisky; me cognac. I'd interviewed my fair share of 'brainy' people but those individuals paled in comparison to the amazing intellect and use of English that came to Hitch as a matter or routine. I was right, in one context, that I didn't really know the Hitch, as most others did. The brilliantly funny man I met in bars accepted me on a level field as our talks were confined to that superficial, bizarre, whacky side of life that appealed to us. I left the States for home and, tragically, we never met again. He became more and more famous and in demand and all my attempts to do a formal interview with him never came to pass, however, in a way I was glad about that because I prefered to remember that wonderful man of the Johnny Walker Black, the occasional Martini and hilarious banter that, now, becomes more fuzzy with the passage of time and the ingestion of booze. I'm also glad, in a cowardly kind of way, that I didn't see Christopher when he was deteriorating with his illness. We weren't close mates, but I'm not ashamed to say that I cried like a baby when I learned he had died. Hitch, if there is an afterlife, I'll look for you in the bar... BH

Hitch gives his reason for having Black Label as his favourite in Hitch 22: it's not the cheapest of cheap whisky or unpalatable, but it's common enough that he could get his hands on it reliably while he travelled to all those places he did that might not have stocked whisky a connoisseur would approve of. Hardly a fraud or a disappointment

Well.... It shows the difference between an alcoholic and someone who drunks it for the taste, quite frankly. I like whiskey a lot, but before I have to drink Johnny Walker Black, I'd rather drink no whiskey at all until I can have a better one. Because there are a lot of better ones for the same price. My Recomendation would be Glenfiddich 12y.

@@Chomper750 Apart from the fact I will never agree with people who dislike stuff for being feminine, I do want to point out that I didn't simply compare Glenfiddich 12y to JW Black. I said "there are a lot of better ones for the same price" You want it smoky? no problem. That's easy. There are loads of whiskys at that pricepoint that have that. And I'd argue that no matter your specific taste there's always a better whiskey for you at that price.

I have been busy working the past few days, but a bottle of JW Black will be in my possession soon. A giant of intellect, a man of immense passion, dare I say of compassion as well ( in a form many would never understand), I believe Hitch's words will last as long as those of Aquinas, Aristotle, Paine, and far longer than what some millions, if not billions cling to so desperately today. Immortality has never been about a soul or a consciousness, but rather reach and import. Hitch is immortal.

Johnny Walker Black isn't a whiskey. It's Scotch. Irish has the 'e' in it. He doesn't mention malts, for some reason.

"WHISKY" NOT "WHISKEY" A pedantic but precious point that Hitch would have pointed out, Scotch Whisky doesn't have an "E" in the spelling, that's for the Irish or American Faux stuff ; )

I've bought & $80 handles of spirit before like patron just to see what all the fuss is about and honestly always ended up a bit disappointed. $89 for a handle of Johnnie double black, I think the best money I've ever spent (tied with my Keurig)

There's a silly story from high school that lead me to a love of Johnnie Walker Black. People often ask me how I drink it. I have a few answers...with style..is a good one but the real answer is how do you not?

There is another video where Hitchens get asked directly by an audience member on his favourite whiskey. The questioner mentioned Hitchens introduction to Kinsley Amis Everyday Drinking. Does anyone know what this video is called. I can't seem to find it? Thanks in advance

I knew I was on to something! About a year ago I embarked upon a Scotch quest. I came to to conclusion that JW Black was my favorite (blended, I don't yet have the wallet for a single malt quest) Scotch. I prefer it over Chivas 12, and...well I just really like the stuff! This makes me feel even better about my decision.

I've just had an argument online where the other person kept saying I was making an argument from personal incredulity, when I clearly wasn't and they were using that phrase wrong. My argument was thus: certain elements are better for making life with, and since carbon is both the most versatile element and one of the most common, it would be quite shocking if the first life we found outside Earth was not carbon based. I justified the first part by noting that noble elements are inert, thus can not form chemical bonds and can't form life, thus certain elements are better. The second part I justified with the basic facts of chemical bonds and how carbon makes more molecules than all other molecules combined and is abundant compared to other similar elements like silicone, and it breaks bonds much easier, thus is better thermodynamically, and thus most life is likely to be carbon based. Apparently, the fact that i said it would be "shocking" makes it an argument from incredulity. When I then asked for a clarification of their definition, we agreed on "I can't believe or understand X therefore it can't be true" and I pointed out that I hadn't made such an argument, that I fully accept the possibility that life COULD be made other ways, just that it would be unlikely that we find that kind of life before we find carbon based life, and thus it would be a shock if we did find silicone based life, for instance, first. The person then blocked me because I was "twisting their words" when I said they sounded like Jordan Peterson. Anyways, after that I need a dose of sanity and for that I need Hitch talking about booze. PS. Same dude also said that i was using an argument from authority when I said "I'm saying exactly what experts in this field say" to make the point that what I was arguing is the mainstream thought on the subject, backed up by the data we have from biology, chemistry and physics.
